Today's "Fanfare" letters column in the sports section of the Sacramento Bee, there was a letter to the sports editor, in defense of girl's basketball. I'm going to share it with you:

WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT WORTH MORE ATTENTION
Published 2:15 am PST Sunday, March 19, 2006

This letter is for guys whose daughters are high school sports stars. Your daughters are second-class citizens. They will never get the recognition they deserve. Oh, there will be some notice of their abilities and accomplishments, but it will be grudgingly given and always less than their male counterparts.

Look at the coverage of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament selections and brackets in The Bee on Tuesday. There was a small article below the fold on the front page and continued on the back page. The bracket was on the back page as well, and so small as to be almost illegible.

The men's coverage Monday began with large headlines and articles above the fold, and continued with stories on Page C5. Pages C6 and C7 were filled with more articles, a small mention about the women's pairings and a bracket large enough to be a poster. These pages were followed by a full page of the men's field by regions.

Does this bother you? Does your daughter deserve less because she is a woman? Speak up, guys.
