Let's Get This Draft Right !

I know, I know, hindsight is always 20/20. But looking at our last 6 drafts:

2008: we drafted Jason Thompson; we could have had Hibbert, Ryan Anderson, Serge Ibaka.

2009: we drafted Tyreke and Omri Casspi; we could have had Stephen Curry, Demar DeRozan, Jerebko.

2010: we drafted Cousins WE GOT IT RIGHT!!

2011: we drafted Jimmer; we could have had Klay Thompson, Kawhi Leonard and Chandler Parsons (in 2nd rd)

2012: we drafted Thomas Robinson; we could have had Damian Lillard or Andre Drummond.

2013: we drafted Ben McLemore; We Might Have Gotten It Right? We could have had M. Carter-Williams or Steven Adams.

What did other teams see that we didn't, or what didn't they see that we did? 2 out of 6 isn't very good, especially where we were drafting.

2011/2012 is maloof and keith smart idiocy. 2009/2010 was good. we just didn't put complimentary pieces around them. 2013.. remains to be seen. i liked steven adams a lot and think we whiffed hard when there was all this talk about defense defense defense. lo and behold we gutted the team of all capable defenders and put offense in. definitely a clash between GM & HC. this year? my money is we pick tweener aaron gordon. with mully in gerbil's ear, you bet the name aaron gordon has come up more than once.

I wouldn't be too upset drafting Gordon. But my money says he's gone before our pick.

With that said, I want Smart.

Don't discount McLemore yet. I think the kid would finally start hitting those shots especially we improve our offense and team chemistry gets better.
Sacramento was a revolving this season that's tough for a rookie to learn to play with the whole team.

And I still think Reke is much better than DeRozan, Curry(yes Stephen Curry) or Jerebko.

I feel like you might be ignoring something incredibly obvious from this span of years.

I'm all for getting this draft right. I have no problem, though, with past draft picks you list. Each pick was legitimate and with expectation it would work well for us. Hind sight does not exist in the process of making a draft pick. Our team has needs on the way to improving. We may get some help from the draft. I know they do their homework so now all they need is some luck. Good luck, PDA and crew.

There is no question that some of those draft picks we made ala Jimmer & T-Rob were head scratching. Those other drafts I can live with, but boy those two drafts sure held us back. Player development would be nice too.

In 2008 I was a big fan of Ryan Anderson, but I was pretty much whistling in the dark. Hibbert hadn't really shown much at Georgetown, and Ibaka was the mystery man, who got a lot of publicity for his showing in one of the highschool all star games. So it was easy to miss on those guys, and it's not like JT has been a bust.

In 2009 we made the right choice at the time. Lets not forget that Tyreke was ROY. DeRozen has just now began to show that he warrants praise. I won't even comment on Jerebko when comparing him to Tyreke. In 2011 and 2012 we blew it big time. I won't go off on Parsons again. He was my choice in the 2nd round, so enough said. Klay Thompson turned out to be far far better than anyone thought he would be. He had a nice career at Wash St., but no one thought he could be this good. The obvious choice was Leonard, but the Maloof's fell in love with Jimmer, and thought because of his press clippings, he would put butt's in the seats.

I think Thomas Robinson was a similar choice as Fredette. I don't blame them for passing on Drummond. He had a very bad year at UCONN, and as a result he had a lot of red flags flying on him. Easy to look back now and say we blew it, but you could say the same thing of a lot of teams. Lillard is a different story. He did play for a mid-level school, but that's not an excuse for an NBA team with a good scouting staff. Which makes on wonder what was left of the scouting staff that they originally had. Maybe they never saw him play. Robinson was the easy and safe choice. Just not the best choice.

I blame a lack of vision on how this team should be built and a lack of player development to the reason our draft picks look so bad. I still believe we missed out on building around Tyreke and Demarcus properly. They should have left Tyreke at PG and let him grow into it.

Why? What is it that you like, other than his defense?
Gordon or Smart? I'm not sure who you mean, but i'll answer both.

The thing I like about Gordon, other than his defence, is his athleticism, which is what Ranadive flagged as being the Kings' new cornerstone. Not to mention, he's young. The youngest player in the draft. There's plenty of time for him to develop.

With Smart? He's a leader. He's big, and strong, and he knows how to be a legitimate point guard without having the score-first mentality.

Baja was more than likely asking about Smart, as he's not too high on him. Personally I think everything on both sides has been said. Everyone knows his strengths and weaknesses, and some of us disagree on what those strengths and weaknesses actually are. The proof will be in the pudding, but I certainly think he has more to like than just defense. That said, I'm not sure your comments that he's a "legitimate point guard without having the score-first mentality" is accurate. He's, in my opinion, a good passer with PG instincts BUT he took a lot of shots and looked to create for himself a lot. I think that can be coached easily enough in the NBA but right now you can't make that argument convincingly.
