Let's break down the Spurs....

...since the Hornets have already started their off-season and we know the Spurs are our first round opponent:

Ginobelli -- barrells his way to the basket and tries to run u over...can't do it against Wells or Ron. We have the size to match. Will have to be on from the perimeter to have a real impact.

Finley and Van Exel --- shells of their former selves.....once King killers are a half-step to a step slower. No real threat in limited minutes.

Duncan -- good for 20 points and 10 boards...but with foot problems is he good for 35 and 15 --- which is what it will take to beat us when we bring our "A" game (or even a "B+" game)? Probably not. I am NO fan of Kenny Thomas....but he does play active post defense....and his smaller size may actually work to his advantage to push Duncan away from his sweet spot down low. Needs to stay out of foul trouble since Rahim is pretty weak defender anyway you slice it.

Parker --- quick as a bug...give him the outsider. Has Ron Artest rubbed off enough on Mike Bibby to actually mean he can slow him up? Mike has been playing brilliant basketball...and if he puts the pressure on Parker on the offensive end I like our odds at this position. Besides, Parker has Eva Longoria waiting for him every night....isn't he way friggin overdue for a little adversity and setback in the form of first round dismissal. C'mon!!!! No one can lead this charmed of life, can they?

Nazir Mohammed -- this guy is a good player. Kind of like a Kevin Martin for us. Can be a real impact player when he is game is "on".

Bruce Bowen --- no-talent hacker scrub, dirty bum. Hopefully, the ref crews will call the game tight, and not allow for his holding, hacking, and cheap antics. The guy can hit the corner "3" so K-Mart, Bonzi have to stay close when he drifts to the corners.

Robert Horry --- I have to believe his glory days have come and gone. But just when you count him out....he will nail the big shot. But I like our ability to defend the wing position b/c of (1) Artest and Wells do not want to him an inch and (2) K-Mart has recovery quickness to get him. Horry has no post game, no dribble moves. Very one dimensional but still don't ignore him. EVer.

Overall....this roster does not fear me top to bottom as the Suns do when they are "on" nailing threes and Nash is running their offense to perfection. And Shawn Marion is flying to the basket...and Eddie House draining shots in a blink of an eye....no thanks. Give me the Spurs.

So what if they are the defending champs? That was last year....this is now. There is a reason very few teams repeat as champs. Complacency sets in...age takes it toll...injury take their toll....the hunger is not there as it once...we are not going to roll over lightly...and despite their reputation as being so vaunted defensively I really believe we can score on this team too.

Greg Popovich may be their biggest weapon. But he does not put on a uniform. He only has so much influence. But he will have his team ready, and his game plan, his in-game adjustments, and his defensive schemes will all have to be effectively counter schemed by Adelman and staff.

I love the playoffs!!!!!!!

Does anyone know if a defending champ has ever been knocked out in the first round? I know they keep stats on everything....I'd be curious to know how many times a NBA Champ has (1) failed to make the playoffs the following year (if ever?) and (2) got bounced in the 1st round (if ever?).

If never, let's make history!

you're kidding right? the spurs are good at controlling the tempo of games.... they could easily take the kings out of their rhythm.... and for a jumpsooting team without a true go-to guy.... c'mon....

i like our mismatches with bonzi and ron but unless they are playing 40 minutes we are screwed.... there is no way that martin and garcia are going to be able to contain manu, parker and finley.... is van exel even playing? we have no back up center, so what happen when brad goes out and reef is guarding nazr or duncan well.... nevermind....

our bench is what worries me the most.... reef is fine but martin, garcia and hart? i pray that corliss gets some time... i wonder if vtaly will make the cut? how many players do we have on this team? we only have 14, so i guess that monia and sampson wont make it.... okay....

spurs were knocked out in the first by the suns in 00 (duncan did not play at all, 5 game series). bulls didn't make the playoffs in 99. lakers were beaten by the rockets in the first rount in 81 (3 game series). celtics missed the playoffs in 70.

not that this will have any outcome on the series BUT i heard a stat on ESPN that jumped out at me, the spurs haven't made it out of the 2nd round the year after winning a championship.

Ok...but there have only been two chances for them to do it. And the first one Duncan was gone for the playoffs.

Aries, we have Potapenko as the back-up C. Who can bang and defend down low, I think he'll get minutes through-out the series. SAR isn't a slouch on post-defense at least.

Nice stat, but also implies that they have made it TO the second round the year after winning a championship and, therefore, not very helpful as far as we're concerned.

My breakdown of the spurs.

Where they play a half court game, they can still run with any team. They'll just get the necessary stops to beat you.

Parker is having his best season so far. A very quick player. Not a very good shooter so it would be best to let him take the long jumpshot. Going over the top of screens will get us murdered in the paint. Parker will have layup drills.

Manu is a great player. Ron Artest will be gaurding him. NEXT

As we all know the spurs play inside out. Imperative that we watch bowen and his corner 3-pointers. Are rotations have to be quick, decisive! AHHHHHH (sigh of relief) NO MORE PEJA. Bowen will miss the glory days of holding him to a maximum of 10 points. And like Peja, Bowen doesnt know how to put the ball on the floor. Chase him off the 3-point line please.

The kings can get almost any shot we want against the spurs. I dont know how long Brad has been able to shoot 3's, but this will bring their best shotblocker out of the paint.

The spurs are a horrible FT shooting team. MEMO To Mike and Brad, please use all your fouls. I'm not saying foul out here. Im saying by the end of the game you should have more than 2 fouls.

all good takes, but a couple of minor corrections. first, tony parker has a shooting coach this season and has been hitting his midrange shots. second, bruce has worked on his ball handling to the point of hitting midrange and layups - very defendable, but now you're on your second defender and somebody is open. third, spurs have two shot blockers on the floor at all times, only one will defend miller.

Tony's jumper is streakey at best still, it is better but the bigger improvement thus far has been his shot selection (aside from one particular game where he lit it up against Phoenix). TP shot 156 3's last season, only 36 this season.

Manu ran into plenty of size and physicality in last years playoffs. It didn't stop him then. It's not likely to stop him this year. However, Manu can be a bit streaky. If anybody can stop Manu, it's Manu.

Finley and Van Exel --- shells of their former selves.....once King killers are a half-step to a step slower. No real threat in limited minutes.

Finley has shown streaks of brilliance this season. More likely than not he will be called on to shoot wide open three-pointers much like Horry. Nick on the other hand has been a disappointment. He can still shoot though so I wouldn't ignor him entirely

Duncan -- good for 20 points and 10 boards...but with foot problems is he good for 35 and 15 --- which is what it will take to beat us when we bring our "A" game (or even a "B+" game)? Probably not. I'm not sure what you mean by the "A game" "B game" stuff. Duncan has pretty much put up 18 pts and 11 rebounds per game all season and it hasn't hurt us one bit.

Parker --- quick as a bug...give him the outsider. Has Ron Artest rubbed off enough on Mike Bibby to actually mean he can slow him up? Mike has been playing brilliant basketball...and if he puts the pressure on Parker on the offensive end I like our odds at this position. Parker is going to be a big problem for you guys. If I were assigned to defend him, I would be as physical as possible just to frustrate him and force him to score from the free throw line. If he fails to keep up the same pace that he has in the regular season, the Spurs aren't likely to repeat.

Nazir Mohammed -- this guy is a good player. Kind of like a Kevin Martin for us. Can be a real impact player when he is game is "on".

Good on the offensive boards and low-post offense. Not a very good defender. Rasho should be given props for his defense, but that rarely happens.

The way you talk about Bowen you'd think he had jumped into the stands and punched some random fans. The view must be spectacular from your glass house.

His post game is much better than you think. He's too old to do it for long stretches of a game. Other than that, I agree with you.

Overall....this roster does not fear me top to bottom as the Suns do when they are "on" nailing threes and Nash is running their offense to perfection. And Shawn Marion is flying to the basket...and Eddie House draining shots in a blink of an eye....no thanks. Give me the Spurs.

Fair enough. I can't really testify their hunger, but I certainly hope it's still there.

Greg Popovich may be their biggest weapon. But he does not put on a uniform. He only has so much influence. But he will have his team ready, and his game plan, his in-game adjustments, and his defensive schemes will all have to be effectively counter schemed by Adelman and staff.

I like Pop. He's a good coach, but Pop himself frequently admits that he isn't the main reason for the Spurs success. He isn't just being modest.
