I don't know if everyone has heard that the Lakers are calling their bench "the bench mob." Apparently everyone thinks that this is something they made up and its super cool because its L.A.

Here is an article by Marty Mac during the 2000 season in which Jon Barry named himself and Darrick Martin leaders of "the bench mob"

and here is an article about the Lakers "bench mob" written this month

are the lakers trying to steal our sayings!? you be the judge

If so, did Jon Barry mention anything about it when he's on air? I'm pretty sure he's heard the Lakers' bench self-proclaiming themselves the bench mob, and I know he definitely isn't a Laker fan; I'm pretty sure he has an opinion on it.

I heard that on ESPN this morning; as if I needed another reason to hate the gd lakers...

Oh, yah, well Barry was a Laker scrub in 98. Little do you know that term is probably some S that Shaq came up with originally (sounds like him). So it was in fact Barry who stol'd it. Hm........

Yeah, I noticed that too... question is, were we the first to use "bench mob"? I can't recall anything earlier, but that doesn't mean anything. :)

while reading this, i just heard kobe say bench mob, but it didn't really bother me. but i find that i don't detest the lakers as much as i detest their fans. So if i hear laker fans saying it, then ill get really pissed.

I actually think it was a phrase coined by/for the Kings. The fact it's now being used by the team from down south is actually more than a little humorous to me.

That reserve team has nothing compared to the REAL Bench Mob and its successors Sac in their reign was pretty deep in the bench :D i remember those line ups that our bench could compete against starters :D i doubt LA's bench can compete with starters...

As noted, I detest the term, but you must not have been watching this year when the Laker bench has held their own and even extended leads...even during the playoffs. :D

That's the least straight hair I've seen ever.

2nd least.

This rings so true to me. I no longer hate the players on the Lakers anymore. I actually LIKE Bynum and Gasol, go figure. I still can't stand the frontrunning "I'm only obvious when my team is winning" nature of so many of their fans that live up here in Sacto.

Oh, come on, hoopsie. I think you know full well what he was getting at. Let us have our brief moment in the sun. We earned it back then. And remember - the vast majority of Kings fans would never watch Laker games unless they were playing the Kings.

i dont know that i would say the majority of kings fans would never watch a lakers game. i would like to say that kings fans are educated basketball fans as well. and being a basketball fan, they would watch whatever games they could get. i guess if you could make the argument that kings fans who are not basketball fans only watch kings games, but i dont think thats very true.

My point to hoopsfan, a Lakers fan, was that I thought she was assuming facts not in evidence. She would naturally know more about her bench than most Kings fans.

I've been a basketball fan for over 40 years. That doesn't mean I watch every single game of every team every night. My priority, of course, is the Kings. After that, I prefer to watch teams I can actually like - and the Lakers do not fall into that category.

Other than that, I'm not really sure what you're saying.

That makes me sick. I don't care what team chooses to use that word, why can't they come up with something else.
