Just a small but I think significant comment, if I might? I think the use of the term "Magoof" is disrespectful and more than a little childish, along with being terminally trite. It was done, it was overdone and now it just looks silly...

Agree with your whole post, but especially this part. I would also like to add that while the Maloofs have been stingier and potentially meddle more than they did in the early years, they are also FAR FAR better owners than we have had in the past. In fact, they are still probably in the top 25% in the NBA. There are very few current or potential owners out there who have the unlimited financial means or completley hands off attitude of Paul Allen.

Despite their imperfections, the Maloofs are still willing to pay essentially up to the luxury tax level, let Petrie handle all personnel decisions and are actively involved in the team and seem to enjoy their ownership. I wish they would spend more, let Petrie choose the coaches, etc. However, they are not idiots and we should be greatful to have them versus the alternatives.

I will add to this, that I think some of the younger posters here never experienced the Jim Thomas era when Petrie finally threatened to quit because Thomas did not want to spend money to use our cap space to sign Vlade. If all you have evern known is the Maloofs ownership, consider yourself lucky.

As much as this team has disappointed me lately, and the last two coaching selections have left me stratching my head in confusion, I don't get how ANYONE could be pointing the fingers at the Maloofs. Sure, the whole arena thing has left a bad taste in our mouths, but other than that, they have let Petrie spend pretty much anything, up to the tax limit (and sometimes beyond). People are angry that they get so involved with the team but come on, if you put MILLIONS of your own cash into something, wouldn't YOU want to be there to make sure it is being run correctly? And hell..maybe sometimes, even say something or do something to make sure it is? It's their team, and they pay for it..and if they wanted to fire everyone and be the coach and GM of their team, well then, go for it. Not to say I would support that team, but it IS their team.

Actually I think it just as likely that people who survived the Thomas years (or the earlier years) have a perverted perspective themselves. Jim Thomas was not an "average" NBA owner. There are only a handful of ownership situations around the league that are as bad as he was. That's not a baseline. Its like the people who point to Pervis Ellison as a reason not to get a #1 pick.

And the Maloofs are NBA neophytes. They do not get it, have demonstrated they do not get it, spout ignorance about basketball and the league 75% of the time they open their mouths, and in general need to be told to sit down and shut up, watch and learn. This does not necessarily make them that much different than most NBA owners, although it certainly does not make them better. And their egos remain problematic. Being an idiot is one thing. Being an idiot and not realizing it is what has created so many problems. There are owners around the league who do that too -- and they ALL are problems for their teams. As are the Maloofs. The last time they were a positive for this franchise was when their wallets were open and the decisions were made by basketball people (roughly 2003). If this downturn in fortunes is teaching them a little humble this franchise will be far better off.

P.S. As an aside, 75% of the teams in the league operate right at the tax limit. There is nothing exceptional about it. There are only a handful of truly cheap teams, and then a handful of teams that will go over the tax limit (Portland, Mavs, Knicks). Everybody else clusters right between the salary cap limit an the tax limit.
