Kings vs Raptors - Summer League Game 3

He has never had handles, can't go left and probably related, he has no 1 on 1 game. That's the guy we drafted. He has to hit darn near every shot he puts up or the pick will have been a mistake. Today was fine but we saw all the goods and bads. He was also known as being a decent defender but that's a topic difficult to discuss as there aren't the tons of stats to describe it. I'm being serious. 1/2 of the game is not discussed and is not valued when it comes time to discuss salaries.

Yeah, unless you're a shotblocker or you grab a ton of rebounds, there's not a lot of stats that prove your worth defensively. Which is probably a good thing really if you're in the business of scouting under-appreciated talent. We just picked up a guy who may be one of the top 5 perimeter defenders in the league for a couple of second round picks. That's as close as it gets to a free giveaway in the NBA and all because he doesn't have much of an offensive game. You probably aren't going to win with a team that can only defend, but if you know how to scout and develop that side of the game you have a definite advantage in this league. Not that many teams do it well.

The interview with DA was terrible. Didn't ask about the Tyreke/Vasquez trade, McLemore, Landry. Just a lot of softballs. The response DA had when asked about Cousins wasn't voluble to put it mildly: 1) things are going to be done differently, 2) they are aggressively building relationships, and 3) they are aggressively evaluating this team.....he's a guy that we love (shrug) and we see great things for him (shrug)... Hmmm.....

Absolutely nothing has changed regarding my opinion of McLemore. I still see him topping out as the third option on a contender with his polished game off-the-ball. Summer league is an awful setting for showcasing what McLemore can do.

I didn't manage to watch this game, but I will catch the replay tonight. On paper, McLemore seemed to have himself a good game, which is a good sign. It's quite amusing how that happens to coincide with a lack of negativity towards McLemore. Hopefully, his confidence goes up and so do his shooting percentages.

I do agree with you that McLemore is a 3rd option type of player, but he has the talent to be an ultra talented 3rd option/all star. On some nights, he will be the first option if he's hot, and on other nights the 2nd. We need to find that second option, because it sure is not Vasquez!

Was thinking along the same lines. Peja relied on Webber, Divac, Christie et al to set him up, but he was still the second-leading scorer on a contending squad. If Ben is a (potentially better defending) Peja at the 2 spot, he'll have turned out to be a fine pick at #7 in this draft.

Edit: could also do a mid-2000s Pistons with Cuz as Sheed and Ben as Rip. Even Luc as Prince (and he IS a prince!). Still need a Billups and Ben Wallace, though, and those are tough to find.

Well most of those good teams didn't have cap space and the ones that did were still hanging on to hope they could get Howard.

Because that makes so much sense.. Let's pin all our hopes on a FA that every other team in the league is probably gunning for and ignore every other FA until this is resolved.

Not to nitpick, but out of these examples 1 never even made it to the finals and the other won 1 championship as an extremely good defensive team. I'd rather follow the example of the teams that have won multiple championships and have both backcourt and frontcourt stars that create for themselves.

I think form has played a big role in the difference in shooting %'s. Today I usually could tell which shots were good the instant he rose up due to form/rhythm.

The kid has a long ways to go. But by all accounts he's humble and a hard worker so he should figure it out eventually.

You forget IT but other than that I agree. MT is undoubtedly a prolific scorer especially when he catches fire and I can't wait to see what kind of season he has as a full time starter.

Don't forget Isaiah Thomas off the bench and to a lesser extent Jimmer.

If that is indeed the starting lineup then it isn't too hard to envision Thornton putting up 20-22 ppg as the #2 option on offense. If he does, and McLemore starts really rounding out a couple months in then Thornton becomes a fairly attractive trade piece at the deadline. A guy who can get hot and really fill it up and who at that point only has half a season before he's an easy to move ending contract could bring back a significant piece.
