Not a very encouraging game. If Joerger truly wants to play somewhat similar to what the Grizzlies did, we absolutely need Willie to be able to create some offense on his own. He tried to do that, but it was pretty embarassing.
Of course during the regular season the spacing will be a bit better, which should help him a bit, but still I just can't imagine us to be very successful right now.
Liked Cousins interview a lot. Supported his young teammates as he always does publicy and gave a hint, that he is all in with Joerger and a defensive playstyle. Of course we all know, that this mindset will only last as long as we manage to be a winning team.
I'd imagine this game plan will look better when we're running it through the best big man in the game as opposed to a clearly out of his comfort zone WCS and Guidatis.
Of course but the Memphis offense featured two bigs able to create and dish to teammates. Even though Joerger abandoned the pure post up style Lionel Hollins was preaching and gave his guards a more potent role in the offense, the abilities of Gasol and Zbo were the heart of this team. So far Willie hasn't shown lots of promise on offense, still lacks fundamentals and our guards are nowhere near the quality of the Memphis guards of the grit and grind era. So basically we have to hope Rudy can make enough impact on the offensive and defensive end. Or we keep hoping for a trade.
1 bit of good news I forgot to mention: Joerger has been making good use of his newfound riches and is no longer in any danger of starving.
Willie is at his best when he is the free safety on both ends. In this team he was being asked to be the quarterback. The most encouraging thing i saw was the first play of the game popping out wide open and drilling the 20 footer with confidence. If he can develop that and put it on the floor with confidence its just a cherry on top of his game. The fact that he is working on it and trying to work out the kinks here in summerleague should encourage fans.Summer league showd that WCS really isn't your first or second offensive option and we all knew that.
For all the obsession with trading Rudy, he does balance our offense out.
I'm not overly worried about WCS. Cousins on offense is twice the player of Z and Marc and with a vet SG and real depth at SF with Rudy, omri and Barnes we will be fine.
Boogie always has a subdued delivery in interviews.I thought the team had tired legs. Willie was rushing but he will come back strong next game. The interview with Boogie was awkward though the woman who interview him who does the Warrior game is awesome at getting the best out of the interviewee. But Boogie is a tough nut to crack. I don't know how process his mood. He says one thing, the right things, but he has this expression on his face of somber resignation. Its strange. I do think he genuinely likes the new coaching staff but he has this chronic attitude of pessimism I cannot put my finger on. Its like this cloud of foreboding doom...he wants to be positive but feels like things probably won't work out. Maybe he's just trying to play it cool, which is not really that cool. Then there's the pat answers he gives like Player A or Player B is "going to be special" but I am not sure of he believes it. I think back in the day he thought T-Rob and Jimmer were going to be special too. That's my analysis for the day because it beats having to analyze that train wreck of a game.![]()
I'm not sure it's him trying to be "cool." He gave an interview a few days ago (Dave's show?) and he did have a somber resignation. The answers he gave basically questioned if a team can be built around a "big." He comes across as a very thoughtful individual.I thought the team had tired legs. Lol baller tummy for real!1 bit of good news I forgot to mention: Joerger has been making good use of his newfound riches and is no longer in any danger of starving.
This is how WCS always plays. Go back and watch his last year at UK. He never scored or rebounded. It took him three years to get to the league and he still wasn't ready, which is why I was nervous about the pick back then. Most of Caliper's guys are NBA ready after two years at the mostWell yes, but point being that Willie not being a good rebounder and him not boxing out is not solely because Karl had him switching onto the perimeter but also to do with his own fundamentals.

It strikes me as a player who knows everything he says and does, is more likely to be twisted into a negative than the average player.I thought the team had tired legs. Running the offense through WCS will either work or it wont. Working well in the first game of SL was never going to happen.
His defensive rebounding was really poor last night. Would've liked to see him work more on his defensive side of the game. Willie was over-helping a lot, causing him to roll back to his man way too late. He was outhustled and outmuscled by both Siakim and Poeltl.I have absolutely 0 issue featuring WCS and trying to see what he can do with a heavy workload. Why the hell not? The most productive part of summer league for 2nd/3rd year players is to let them focus on a weakness that they'd never get to do in an NBA game. For WCS, that's creating his own offense.
