[Game] Kings vs Raptors Game Thread

Positive take aways:

- Skal: showed his potential driving to the rim and hitting a 3. Nice touch.
- Willie: made nice passes to wings spotting up as he finished with three assists.
- Richardson: If he can clean up his decision making he can really be dangerous. Moved the ball early and didnt Force anything until it was clear we didn't get anything going offensively. His catch and shoot three looked really good. I want to see more of that.
- Mitrovic: Looked bigger (and slower) than I thought. More of a 4 than a 3. Made some nice passes.

Skal is the most interesting player we have had since Cousins/Thomas in terms of what he could do in the future for us would love to see him get spot minutes every game sort of like what Portland did with Noah Vonleh all year until the playoffs where every game they allowed him 5-10 mins of him going out there and competing. I liked the moves WCS was making but he lacked polish.......just in terms of pure movement reminds me of a longer/weaker Kenyon Martin and both got funky looking mid range J's.

I don't get how guys that are trying to get noticed by other NBA teams put up a performance like that in terms of effort.

Not a very encouraging game. If Joerger truly wants to play somewhat similar to what the Grizzlies did, we absolutely need Willie to be able to create some offense on his own. He tried to do that, but it was pretty embarassing.
Of course during the regular season the spacing will be a bit better, which should help him a bit, but still I just can't imagine us to be very successful right now.
Liked Cousins interview a lot. Supported his young teammates as he always does publicy and gave a hint, that he is all in with Joerger and a defensive playstyle. Of course we all know, that this mindset will only last as long as we manage to be a winning team.

I try not to interprete too much into it. Last year people said Willie had zero offensive game. He showed during the regular season that this is not true hitting a few jumpshots and using his quickness and length. Now, only one year later, we expect to run the whole offensive thru him. Of course he is going to struggle. But Summer League is the perfect way to explore how far he has come, what he can do and what he can't (yet).
Regarding the regular season, it seems like our starting five will be Collison-Afflalo-Rudy/Omri-Willie and Cuz. Willie is the clear #5 option in this lineup even if he is better than what people thought of him. We will be fine.

I'd imagine this game plan will look better when we're running it through the best big man in the game as opposed to a clearly out of his comfort zone WCS and Guidatis.

Of course but the Memphis offense featured two bigs able to create and dish to teammates. Even though Joerger abandoned the pure post up style Lionel Hollins was preaching and gave his guards a more potent role in the offense, the abilities of Gasol and Zbo were the heart of this team. So far Willie hasn't shown lots of promise on offense, still lacks fundamentals and our guards are nowhere near the quality of the Memphis guards of the grit and grind era. So basically we have to hope Rudy can make enough impact on the offensive and defensive end. Or we keep hoping for a trade.

Summer league showd that WCS really isn't your first or second offensive option and we all knew that.

For all the obsession with trading Rudy, he does balance our offense out.

I'm not overly worried about WCS. Cousins on offense is twice the player of Z and Marc and with a vet SG and real depth at SF with Rudy, omri and Barnes we will be fine.

I thought the team had tired legs. Willie was rushing but he will come back strong next game. The interview with Boogie was awkward though the woman who interview him who does the Warrior game is awesome at getting the best out of the interviewee. But Boogie is a tough nut to crack. I don't know how process his mood. He says one thing, the right things, but he has this expression on his face of somber resignation. Its strange. I do think he genuinely likes the new coaching staff but he has this chronic attitude of pessimism I cannot put my finger on. Its like this cloud of foreboding doom...he wants to be positive but feels like things probably won't work out. Maybe he's just trying to play it cool, which is not really that cool. Then there's the pat answers he gives like Player A or Player B is "going to be special" but I am not sure of he believes it. I think back in the day he thought T-Rob and Jimmer were going to be special too. That's my analysis for the day because it beats having to analyze that train wreck of a game. :D

Willie is at his best when he is the free safety on both ends. In this team he was being asked to be the quarterback. The most encouraging thing i saw was the first play of the game popping out wide open and drilling the 20 footer with confidence. If he can develop that and put it on the floor with confidence its just a cherry on top of his game. The fact that he is working on it and trying to work out the kinks here in summerleague should encourage fans.

Boogie always has a subdued delivery in interviews.

I'm not sure it's him trying to be "cool." He gave an interview a few days ago (Dave's show?) and he did have a somber resignation. The answers he gave basically questioned if a team can be built around a "big." He comes across as a very thoughtful individual.

Boogie has always had that southern drole. I get the feeling he is a bit shy and reserved, and thoughtful too. I don't think it has anything to do with trying to be cool. It's just how he is - he was the exact same in interviews at UK too.

Btw Skal looked talented and intriguing. The athleticism, fluidity, shooting, shot-blocking. Still a couple years away but he could be the steal of the draft.

Malachi resorted a little to chucking but I don't actually blame him as it looked like most of the guys were going out of their way not to give him the ball, particularly early.

Gudiatis looked overwhelmed by the pace and was completely ineffective. Lets hope he adjusts.

Very disappointed Georgis didn't get to play, hope he is back for tomorrow. Although the style of SL means he is sure to look underwhelming too.

Well yes, but point being that Willie not being a good rebounder and him not boxing out is not solely because Karl had him switching onto the perimeter but also to do with his own fundamentals.
This is how WCS always plays. Go back and watch his last year at UK. He never scored or rebounded. It took him three years to get to the league and he still wasn't ready, which is why I was nervous about the pick back then. Most of Caliper's guys are NBA ready after two years at the most

Not being a good rebounder =/= not being ready for the NBA.

He's got a major skillset in an area every team needs. He's going to earn a lot of money over his career.

But we were using him against his type last night, and these repeated attempts to make him an offensive player are especially bemusing in an era when every puffed up moron in the league runs around screaming 'pace and space" "pace and space" and tries to convince you that scoring bigs are dinosaurs.

It strikes me as a player who knows everything he says and does, is more likely to be twisted into a negative than the average player.

I have absolutely 0 issue featuring WCS and trying to see what he can do with a heavy workload. Why the hell not? The most productive part of summer league for 2nd/3rd year players is to let them focus on a weakness that they'd never get to do in an NBA game. For WCS, that's creating his own offense.

Running the offense through WCS will either work or it wont. Working well in the first game of SL was never going to happen.

It won't ever happen. WCS doesn't have the skill set to be a featured option. His shot is ok and he has some decent post moves, but his points will come from lobs, fast breaks, simple mismatches, and the occasional wide open 10 footer. Asking a guy who has never been a top 3 scoring option to be the focal point of our offense is a big reason why we got killed yesterday and why WCS looked so out of place. It's just not his game. The fact that our game plan seemed to be pass the ball to him in the high post and clear out to let him operate baffled me. I would've much rather seen Richardson bring the ball up and run pick and rolls with WCS all day long.

His defensive rebounding was really poor last night. Would've liked to see him work more on his defensive side of the game. Willie was over-helping a lot, causing him to roll back to his man way too late. He was outhustled and outmuscled by both Siakim and Poeltl.

At least now, we know we can put the myth of Willie turning into some type of 3pt shooter away... I still don't even know why people would think he has a 3pt shot secretly tucked into his arsenal. Hell, he went 3-9 from the FT line...
would be really interested to see what those people think of his offense now.

Yes running the offense through WCS wasn't perfect... but I think the major issue is highlighted by the fact Skal was our PG the last few plays of the game and we signed David Stockton after the game. Clearly the PGs weren't executing in a way we were happy with.
