Kings win! Kings win!

Lots of things to like from the first 47.5 minutes of the game! Not much to enjoy from the last several sequences.

De'Aaron with the big boy game! Defensive juggernaut Nemanja Bjelica with three steals and two blocks! Buddy having a nice statistical night before forgetting we aren't tanking anymore! Marvin being Marvin!

---
Justin Jackson (C) --37 min, 7pts (2-9 fg, 1-5 3p), 11 rbs, 0 ast, 1 stl, 0 blk,
First things first: Justin's shot was just completely off last night. That being said, for maybe the first time in his career, JJax found other ways to contribute beyond being a scorer, playing solid team defense and hustling on the glass. While Justin Jackson's ticket to a long career in the league probably isn't going to come via being a defensive role player, it's nice to know that, on occasion, Jackson can do that stuff as well.

Nemanja Bjelica (A) -- 31 min, 11 pts, 11 rbs, 5 ast, 2 stl, 3 blk
I don't know if Vlade knew that Bjeli would turn out to be a giant Serbian version of Draymond Green when he signed him, but Nemanja is making him look like an absolute genius for convincing the 6'10" forward not to go back to Europe after a couple of demoralizing seasons in Minnesota (also how bad a coach is Thibs that he apparently failed to notice the many things Bjeli is capable of doing beyond the stretch forward role he got shoehorned into next to Taj Gibson and KAT?). Bjeli was literally involved in every big play against the Grizzlies: Scoring in the first half to keep the Kings juuuuust close enough to strike in the second, making crafty passes to get everyone involved on offense, grabbing big boards to end Memphis sequences, coming up with defensive stop after defensive stop despite having the lateral quickness of a man who's been shot in both knees and gotten both feet caught in bear traps. Just about the negative thing you can say about Bjeli is that he badly airmailed a single three pointer in the third quarter. I know we're all eager to see Bagley start but with Bjelica play so well, it's nearly impossible to justify moving him to the bench.

Willie Cauley-Stein (B-) -- 35 min, 15 pt, 10 rbs, 2 ast, 2 stl, 0 blk
In the first half, Willie seemed to be our primary offensive option, running circles around Marc Gasol who already seemed to have lost a step before De'Aaron accidentally karate chopped his poor neck. Unfortunately, these ten points came at the expense of WC$'s defense and rebounding. In the second half, with his guards beginning to heat up, Willie switched into a defensive role player, raking in most of his boards as the Kings defensive intensity kicked up a gear and playing really good defense whenever he got switched onto a guard, a skill that makes him unique among most big men not named Draymond or Giannis. Sure he didn't block any shots but the stifling perimeter defense more than made up for that and Nemanja Mutumbo was doing enough of that already.

Buddy Hield (C+) -- 41 min, 23 pts (10-20 fg, 3-6 3p), 7 rbs, 2 ast, 0 stl, 0 blk

De'Aaron Fox (B+) -- 37 min, 21 pt, 8 rbs, 6 ast, 1 sta, 2 blk

***
Marvin Bagley (B) -- 22 min, 13 pt, 6 rbs, 1 ast, 0 stl, 0 blk

Frank Mason (C) --13 min, 5 pt, 2 rb, 2 ast, 0 stl, 1 blk

Yogi Ferrell (D) -- 10 min, 0 pt, 0 rb, 1 ast, 1 stl, 0 blk

Harry Giles (inc.) -- 6 min, 2 pt, 2 rb, 0 ast, 0 stl, 0 blk

Ben McLemore III (Ben) -- Ben Mins, Ben pts, Ben rbs, Ben asts, Ben stls, Ben blks

Great game!

Just need to work on those free throws...

Buddy also needs to additionally work on inbound passing and overall bball IQ drills.

We tried to give away the game and yet Mem couldnt/wouldnt take it. Hey, we have a better record than Houston AND the Fakers. Everybody screen shot the standings for posterity!! And we have the harder schedule so far too!!

good win especially considering its a back to back on the way from Denver and Memphis is a solid physical team. a come from behind as well. so the team somehow found the energy to perform and win even though the odds were stacked against them. gotta give props to that. the one criticism I have is that they make it harder on themselves by forgetting to run the offense and move the ball reverting to one on one play at times. but again this one took grit and its good to see.

I agree completely with this statement. The players on this team have the talent to be special.

Franchise backcourt. I’m getting more and more comfortable that Marvin will be a franchise cornerstone as well, he’s been playing well. Team should be competitive when Bogdan gets back. Great game to be at

Harry, I don’t know what to say but I don’t know if it’s fair to the team at this point to play him. I’m obviously in a different space with WCS than many, controversial player I suppose

Great game. It's so refreshing to see the team play hard and play together, at least for the most part. Being young they forget at times to share the ball, so Joerger always takes the time to remind them of that at timeouts. Nicely done.

Fox had another great game, but what the stats don't say is this young man spent the entire second half in everyone's face on defense and still dropped 21-8-6. It's clear to see that he's got something special deep inside him that's even more impressive than his athletic abilities. There's a beast inside and I love it when it gets angry!

Buddy continues to be Buddy and it's clear to me that he needs to be the first guy off the bench. He's just too careless with the ball and his IQ at times makes me wonder just what he thinks about while on the court. Bogs would help stabilize us and Buddy would have the green light to shoot from the bench (not that he cares about green light or not, guy wants to shoot all the time).

Very nice game. Turnovers killed us in the first half. Missed free throws killed us. But Fox willed us to a win.
I agree that Harry needs to take a step back until he makes the most of his minutes and earns more. It would have been nice if he had come out of the chute ready to play. But, for whatever reasons, he's just not playing well up to this point.

Giles' worse game, by far. Dumb mistakes. Trying to do more than he needs to. He needs to slow his game down.

Fox is a two way beast.

Bags is a foundation.

Bjelly does more than just shoot. We got a steal.

I love Buddy. I hate Buddy. He's a 6th man. Our second unit is our biggest issue right now. Move him there, we win more games. Not rocket science.

Fox has looked fantastic so far. He needs to hit his outside shots and knock down free throws but otherwise he's vastly improved from last season and is starting to look like the major building block we'd hoped he would be.

WCS has also been great to see. And he's done it by focusing on the things the team really needs from him. His rebounding and block numbers should still be better, but he's cut out the midrange jumpers and long drives to the hoop in favor of banging inside for higher percentage looks and his efficiency numbers show that.

Nemanja Bjelica looks like Vlade's best free agent signing, at least on the court. You could argue that Vince Carter and Garrett Temple paid huge dividends as veteran mentors during their time with the young Kings. And Kosta has certainly been solid, if slightly overpaid. But Bjelica is back to looking like the stud he should have been when he first came over. It wasn't like he didn't get opportunities in Minnesota - he played in over 60 games every season and averaged 18 mpg or more but he clearly wasn't given the same type of role. So far for the Kings he looks like a jack-of-all trades that can shoot, pass, score inside, rebound, block shots(!?!) and generally contribute to winning basketball.

Marvin Bagley is starting to figure things out and is already ahead of where I thought he'd be, and I was an advocate for drafting him #2. He lost out on two buckets last night that would have been easy had he gone with his right instead of switching back to his left for a miss and a blocked shot and his outside shot will be a work in progress for a while, but I love his energy, hustle, athleticism and attitude.

To me there are some tweaks that will help this team as it moves forward.

One will be getting Bogi back on the court. I think the starting five should be Fox, Bogdanovic, Bjelica, and Cauley-Stein with one of either Shumpert, Jackson or Hield as the other starter. Ideally Jackson if he can get his scoring/shooting to come around and continue to give effort on defense and the glass. If not, hopefully Shumpert stakes his claim to a starting wing position. That's because I think Hield is best suited as a 6th man and primary bench scorer. Yogi and Frank can battle it out to be the backup PG, but either way that should result in a bench backcourt that can put points up along with a starting lineup that spreads the floor, moves the ball and shoots well from outside along with a great dive man in WCS.

As I said in another thread I would also send Harry down to the Stockton Kings to let him build his confidence back up. He's been struggling so he's pressing more and that makes him struggle even more. Bagley should sub in for Willie at the center spot (where I think he's a better fit) and Skal should get a chance to be the backup PF. In the rare games where there's a big, physical center, Kosta (when healthy) can backup the C spot and MBIII can get his minutes at PF.

But really these are pretty minor tweaks/quibbles for a team that has looked a lot better than I thought they would through five games. A win on Friday would get them their 3rd win (which I thought could take 15-20 games honestly) and to .500, which is not somewhere I thought they'd be all season barring maybe after 2 games. Nice.

I didn't get to watch much of the game beyond the last 5 minutes or so, but I have to say I haven't seen the Kings move the ball like that in a very, very long time. At the very end where all 5 players on the floor touched the ball and got it down to Willie in the post who had a size advantage over his man...that was a thing of BEAUTY.

Obviously theres a lot more improvement needed to take the next step, but it does seem like things are finally clicking for the whole team in many aspects, and it makes me so incredibly happy to see!

I'm proud to have Fox on the Kings and proud that he wants to be here and be a King, he brings an edge and competitive attitude that was missing when Demarcus left.

I have a feeling Harry at 4 will be easier for him if paired with Koufos at center. He's just too skinny to play center right now.

Marvin Bagley looks absolutely phenomenal for a PF/C rookie

I think that the Kings training staff has been working so hard on getting his legs right that the training on his core is going to have to come over the next couple of years.

Westbrook shooting OKC to another loss because he doesn’t pass and his shooting doesn’t match his ego. Not a good benchmark for Fox. Let’s hope Fox watches Chris Paul to pattern his game

Fox with some seriously good defensive plays at the end of the game there. You could tell he was not going to let his team lose.

Willie had some really annoying moments early on where he let 6'5" players rebound over him but came back with some timely boards at the end.

Buddy had some really stupid plays mixed in with some really good ones. Is normal.

Beli was my player of the game. He gives up some points on the defensive end but he always gets multiple stops every game to make up for it.

Bagley had JJJ get the best of him early on but in the end he reigned supreme. Beli played well so he didn't get the minutes he wanted.

Justin thank you for rebounding.

Frank, shoot more!!!!

It will be interesting when Bogdan gets back if Frank does shoot more.

Note to Buddy or Frank....ahoot the open 3 when the ball is swung to you...why why why inatead they will randomly not take the 3 and unatead drive into teeth of defenders is beyond me

Harry i agree needs to settle down. Also, as other mentioned, his strength just isn't there yet. Some g league time or getting some time on the bench might help him once Koufos is back. If not KK then Skal will be getting his shot soon.

We are literally one piece away (Bogi) from giving any team fits every single night, Fox went berserker, WCS just keeps playing grown man basketball, Bagley is just hunger and playing well and Bjelica is the glue that makes every single person on this team better the guys passing/decision making is some of the best you will see from a 6'10 SF/PF. I have loved watching this team so far we are finally not beating ourselves because we finally got in a couple of guys who won't allow it.

He can't play the four either right now though because he is getting blown by laterally too easily. Exact same issue Skal has except Harry actually has talent worth investing in.
