Surely? Either you're unfamiliar with the last several years of NBA basketball in the western conference, or you can see into the future, or you don't know what "surely" means. Last year, the 7th seed had 50 wins. The year before, the 8th seed had 48.

Now, if you want to say that, based on what everybody's winning percentages are right now, that if they all hold up for the remainder of the season, then 48 wins will be good enough for the fifth seed... Eh, that's still a stretch, IYAM. I have no reason to believe that at all, and there's no particularly recent historical evidence to support such a belief. I wouldn't even bet the price of a good meal that a forty-eight win team won't miss the playoffs altogether; I absolutely wouldn't claim that such a record would be assured of a sixth seed.
this season - this conference, I think 48 will be good for 5/6 seed. I don't gamble but lets see at the end of the year. I only meant this year & this conference.

But that would mean losing only 11 from here on out (your math is good).

We still have all these very losable games on our schedule: Memphis, Bulls, Cavs, Spurs, Clippers, OKC, Memphis, Mavs, Spurs, Cavs, Bulls, Mavs, OKC, Rockets. Hard to win any of those - those are all upsets if we win them and we have to have three of those plus be perfect against everyone else. We have some toughies vs Pistons, Celtics, Nuggets, Blazers, Heat, and yes these Pacers.... These games are all in front of us with 11 to give (your number, not mine, but lets go with it because I like 48 wins as a stretch goal and I think we can do it).

I don't think this agenda gives us latitude to lose against the Pacers coming off a bruising loss, on the road - when we're rested at home. I think we've spent too many squandered games this year already and if the mental toughness is really settling in - then our guys should come out like tigers and make sure tonight. So lets see - I hope they do.

I already accounted for the Spurs, Cavaliers, Clippers and Thunder. And I feel like I have to ask, what's so hard about the rest of those games? We only lose to the Mavericks on the road, and we've only got one more of those. We match up well against the Bulls, and these ain't your daddy's Grizzlies. I'm completely discounting the Rockets game, because it's the last game of the regular season; so, if we're in the position where we have to win that game to make the playoffs then, okay, at that point you can say that we "squeaked in," and I won't fight you on it.

But the point is, we're not going to go winless against the "good" teams, and we're not going to go undefeated against the "bad" teams, so there's no one game that going to determine whether we're worthy of the playoffs or not, unless we're still playing to get in on Game 82. The game in Portland on Tuesday is about a hundred times more important than this one.

But yeah, we need to win this one, too.

As usual, I agree with you 100%

Seriously I want to get 5/6. I want it pretty bad because we could win a series or stretch a series vs OKC or Clippers and a playoff series vs Clippers is my wet dream. It would be so thrilling in Sleep Train if that happened. Cp3. Blake. DMC. Rajon. The makings of a great great series that we could win. And that last game of the year vs Rockets could be for seeding - not just for making #8 but the huge difference between #6 and #7.

So I badly want every game that's "gettable".

You're making a good point that we won't win vs all the bad teams nor lose vs all the good teams.

I just want it bad tonight - really bad.

Wanna bet? ;)
(just kidding)

Actually, I agree with your sentiment here, and the gist of your statement even.

It's all well and good to spout the typical "Are you kidding? This isn't a 'must-win'", but for all intents and purposes, if the Kings want to get to the much-preferable 5th or 6th seeds, they really do have to win this and almost all the other games like this on the schedule.
They ran out of chances to mess up, with the turds they laid on the court against the T-Wolves, 76ers, Pelicans, etc.

There really isn't much margin of error left.
Every game for the rest of the year is "the playoff push" to get to 5 or 6 seed.
If they treat these games as anything else, they will not get the 5th or 6th seed, and with it the dreams of the Kings playing in the second round this year are effectively over.

Before the season started I would not have predicted that the Western Conference would look so bad. I STILL think it could right itself and turn this battle into a real dog fight with no one under .500 making the playoffs. I have NOT looked at all the teams to figure why they are stumbling so badly but I will wait until the end of the season before declaring the West to be worst than the East.

I wish people would quit saying things like this 40 games from the end of the season. The fan base is just manic-depressive right now. Its a winnable game, I at some level expect us to win it, but the Pacers aren't pushovers, and we ain't the Warriors. We'll lose quite a few games from here on out, and they aren't all going to be to San Antonio. There is a middle line between world stomper and oh, obvious lottery team.
Theoretically you are right. Practically this team have given away its quota of games. No more! This is not being manic-depressive it is recognizing that this team has decide who it is going to be: a schizophrenic and wallowing pretender or respectable threat to teams at the top of the standings?

A respectable threat is at least a .500 team or better IMHO. I don't care what the standings say to be a legitimate playoff team is .500 or better and the hole the Kings dug means they can't lose games like tonight.

The psyche of this team is teetering on legitimacy but that is jeopardized when you take one step back for every step forward. There is the analytics and collective emotion and confidence and I like to focus on both.

The numbers say the Kings can lose and still be fine but in terms of emotion and momentum and establishing an identity as to who this team is going to be I see a game like tonight as a MUST WIN!!! (especially b/c Pacers played last night)

Word from KG4 and the little princesses (who are at the game in Section 110) is there are a bunch of Pacer fans around them. I'm guessing right now said Pacer fans will not be happy with the vocal renditions of Little Princess 1, who has a shriek that can literally shatter glass.

GO KINGS!!!!

Without deeper analysis, taking into account that:
1) Warriors and Spurs are killing it
2) Western Conference teams play more games against the above two
if we ignore the above two teams, two conferences are about the same.

Since Warriors and Spurs ARE in the Western Conference, Western Conference still has the edge.
