The Sacramento Kings today signed rookie center-forward Hassan Whiteside to a contract, it was announced by Kings’ President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Whiteside was Sacramento’s second round selection (33rd overall) of the 2010 NBA Draft out of Marshall University as an undergraduate.

Whiteside, an early entry candidate, was the 2010 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year after averaging 13.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and a Division I leading 5.35 blocks per game in 34 contests for Marshall. The 7-0, 235-pound center set school records for most blocks in a season and career with 182, the fourth highest season total in Division I history and the second most by a freshman. He led the nation in triple-doubles with three.

Whiteside also garnered the following honors: AP Honorable Mention All-American, Sporting News Second Team freshman All-American, Second Team All Conference USA, Conference USA All-Freshman Team and All-Defensive Team, Second Team NABC All-District 11.

Whiteside becomes just the second player from Marshall drafted by the Kings. Current New York Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni was selected by the Kings in the second round of the 1973 NBA Draft.

Please tell me we gave him a low-1st pick type deal like Blair got last year. I don't want to worry about him getting poached the minute he shows promise.

this is one of those cases where the "terms of the contract were not reported" B.S. is critical. For such a raw player with so much potential, on a team so deep up front, we need to have him locked up for a few years until we see what we have.

I think Blair got a bit above rookie scale, two years guaranteed and two years team option. There's no downside for us, because there's no scenario where we wouldn't want him on our roster this year and next. If he's a total bust, we're out like $2 mil. If he hits, we have him cheap for four years and then he's restricted.

There you go. Offer a contract like he'd get for the 25th pick. He gets a little increased security and feels better about his draft fall, and we get a flexible chance to actually see what we've got and develop him.

I agree. The one thing keeping us from signing him to a duplicate of a first-round pick is that by the CBA there can be only one option year (the only exception is the actual first-round rookie contract structure). So we'd have to guarantee three and give a fourth team option to approximate it. I would be all for this - something like 1.5, 1.5, 1.5, 3.0 (team option) would be an affordable contract that doesn't insult him and gives us a good long chance to develop him. Obviously it's already signed and we're just waiting for contract details, but that's about what I would have preferred.

Welcome to the Kings Hassan Whiteside! And hopefully you're as excited as I am and that you stay for many many years.

Why couldn't we put the option after Year 2? Is the rule that option years have to at least be in the last year of the contract?

When do they announce the contract structure?
Officially, never. We just have to wait for inside reporting, and with the current Bee crew I wouldn't advise starting to hold your breath right now. ;) It always leaks out eventually and ends up on the handful of salary sites, if not in an article.

Apparently, due to a quirk in rules for 2nd rounders' contracts, Whiteside will not be restricted after year four, although we will have Bird Rights (assuming these terms all exist in the next CBA). The fourth year is cheap and doesn't work as the basis of any significant extension, so we'll have no choice but to resign him on the open market at the end of his deal.

He would have been restricted at the end of a three year deal however. Knowing this, I would have gone that route. For all we know though, his agent might have ruled that out as an option. If the choice was a standard 2nd rounder deal (1 yr guar/1 yr opt) and what we gave him, the four year deal is much preferrable.
