Kings scrap T-Shirt giveaway after deemed insensitive

Shouldn't that say "doesn't mean it might not be considered offensive and/or that other people might be offended?"
I worded that most carefully. Saying that something is offensive isn't the same thing as saying that someone should be offended by it.

Are you saying that you don't think that something can be objectively offensive?

I subscribe to this style of thinking when it comes to this stuff:

No, just because I am not offended doesn't mean everyone else should not be as well. Rather, it's the other way around. Just because you ARE offended, doesn't mean that everyone else should have to cater to your personal feelings. You're offended. Great. Have a cookie. It's totally subjective. Be offended. But I'm not going to use me being offended as a way to tell others what to do.

Intolerance of intolerance is not intolerance.

It is in this case, though. This isn't a case of "intolerance". This is a case of "me me me me me" and I want to use how "I" feel (or a few others) to tell someone that some shirt for the Chinese freaking New Year is offensive and to take it down. It's coming from the direction of "I am right, and you are wrong, and I will not accept you doing this without crying about it."

Of course it was not a racist thought process in the shirts, but that is irrelevant to how people would perceive the shirts. The Kings as an organization can do anything they want. They could have told Cuz to F off and they were keeping them out there, or they could do what they did. I think from a PR perspective it was a smart move.

But anyone can perceive racism in anything you do or say or they infer you wanted to say. So where's the line?

Do I dare ask how you did the math on that?

What are you talking about? This wasn't some arbitrary line, it's the first day of black history month and black people have been called monkeys as a derogatory term for decades. I already stated I don't believe there was a shred of racist intent, but that does not mean it would not have been perceived that way. Mind you, I don't think people would have said, "wow kings management are racists" the narrative would have been "can you believe how insensitive and tone deaf the kings are" Which, would not have been the first time. So, as a PR move, it was the correct one.

You also can't perceive racism in anything, that's a non sequitur.

Before I get drawn into a position I abhor. I agree with this line of thinking. There was no easy way out.

Has everyone seen the T shirt? I hope DeMarcus does a little research about the Chinese Lunar New Year otherwise, in my view, he may look a little silly in some people's eyes.

Except the new year starts on the 8th and bhm starts the 1st. It seems more silly to do something that might understandably be perceived as insensitive when it isn't even the right timing.

I'm not sure what this has to do with what I said. I take it that DeMarcus shouldn't have been upset if they gave away the T shirt on Feb 8th. Is that really your point?

I doubt if the Chinese community would have gotten up in arms about this whole deal but it seems that some might be very disappointed with Kings management.

I was just hoping Cousins would take some time out of his busy life to see why this New Year had a monkey affiliated with it. As the Chinese must bow to his sensibilities, perhaps he could find out how it was important to their sensibilities.

If I have used improper words, please try to interpret the gist of what I am saying.

Sorry, maybe I misunderstood your point. I thought you were suggesting that if Demarcus understood the monkey relevance to Chinese New Year that maybe he wouldn't have had an issue with this. And my point was that since it wasn't even the Chinese New Year when they wanted to pass out that culturally relevant shirt but it was the start of Black history month, that maybe the timing was a bigger factor than simply assuming he was ignorant.

I think both Glenn and sdballer make valid points. Perhaps DMC didn't understand the significance of the Year of the Monkey but perhaps it wouldn't have come up if the Kings had thought a little more about the timing. Honoring the Year of the Monkey on the first day of Black History Month just seems like an invitation to misunderstanding by one side or the other.

Isn't it possible that some in the Chinese community might find offense in how the day set aside to honor part of their cultural heritage was pretty much just dumped?

All in all, not a good look for whomever it was who decided on the timing.

That was kind of my point though. It WAS the start of black history month so I get the sensitivity. It was not the first day of the Chinese New Year (which is the 8th) so where would the sensitivity be in just pushing back the timeline

I think you and Glenn are pretty much both on the same page, but coming from different directions. I could be wrong, though, of course. Bottom line is someone in the organization should have caught this before it became a problem.

I think the whole thing was exacerbated by the fact everyone else was wearing t-shirts to honor the start of Black History Month and the Kings had the Year of the Monkey? Just poor planning all around.

Which kind of begs the question: what the hell are they promoting during the Bulls game that they thought is so damned important that they couldn't have done this t-shirt thing tomorrow, instead?

That's a good question. They probably thought it would boost sales on an otherwise slow Monday against the Bucks. But I don't recall seeing many promotions for it, so ???

MOD NOTE: This thread has gone on nicely with some good discussion. Posts that do not contribute to the discussion are going to be removed.

Is there a link with a quote or direct reference to Cousins saying he disapproved of the actual image of a monkey? I just couldn't find one.

I don't think there is a way to have any kind of monkeys on a t-shirt and not offend anyone, right? Or are we getting too sensitive nowadays? (I'm Chinese and coming from a Chinese prospective, so any of you can chime in)
