Did you know that if Mobely, O-Tag, Songaila opt out this year and we don't pick up B-Jax option we would be under the Cap. I believe the cap is a little over $43 million and that would put us at $42 million +/-.

Bricklayer said:As an aside, while the Maloofs might well disagree, I don't want ANY of those guys to opt out. Since its not my money being spent, I want all of those guys to reup so that we can trade them and INTENTIONALLY maintain a higher payroll. Makes trading for bigger/better players much easier.
Bricklayer said:But hey, let's look at the bright side -- if we don't resign or replace any of those guys after next season, AND we let Peja just walk, we'll only have to wait one more year after that to let Corliss walk and not pick up Martin's 4th year and we'll have room to make a run at a major free agent. Of course we'll also be back in the lottery, but you can't have everything.![]()
Rowdyone said:Salary "cap" is a misnomer. It's only real impact is a chilling effect on the owner's proclivity for excess. What it really is is the point at which owners have agreed to make it more expensive to compete for players. It certainly doesn't stop them if they are willing to take the financial hit. So for the cap to be such an issue for fans to "worry" about really means the fans should worry wheather or not "their" owners are willing to pay for a potentially higher finish by willing to exceed the cap to get better talent. Obviously, this is not traditionally good business practice but then, contrary to the saying that "the NBA is a business" is really isn't. It is sport...where rich men use money to compete among themselves. And if they are in it for profit or even break even then they are in the "wrong business...SPORT".
Packt said:If you're over the cap, you can't sign free agents for anything more than the Mid-Level Exception; around 5 million. That takes you out of the running for most if not all of the top FA's on the market. That’s why you see teams dumping contracts when top players come into the market. The only way around it is to do a sign-and-trade; which is how we got Brad.
The salary cap is something fans should be concerned about since it limits what you can do.
Bricklayer said:But there's just virtually no way to get down to a cap number allowing for you to make a big move without tearing down a good team and starting over.
Damn bright side...GRRRR!!!Bricklayer said:Yeah, Tag isn't going to cooperate there, and they just picked up Bobby's option I think. But even if we were able to do that it would be nice for the Maloofs -- get to avoid the luxury tax -- but not so nice for the team. There is no practical advantage to being $1 mil under the cap.
