SACRAMENTO, CA, November 5, 2009 ---- The Sacramento Kings today requested waivers on swingman Desmond Mason, according to President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. Mason, currently in his 10th NBA season and first with the Kings, averaged 2.6 points (.417 FGs, .750 FTs) and 2.6 rebounds per game through five outings (started four) for Sacramento.

Guess you could kind of see that coming.

"Nine-year veteran Desmond Mason is expected to be signed to a non-guaranteed one-year deal for the league minimum of $1.18 million today, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. His deal is what's widely known as a 'make-good,' with Mason needing to still be on the roster on Jan. 10 to have his entire salary guaranteed. The Associated Press first reported the story that Mason would be signed, but did not indicate contract terms."

Wow, I thought that they would at least give him until x-mas, especially with 'Cisco out. Not that I mind or anything, it will give more time for the kids.

He did not show the kind of heart, hustle, and sense of urgency a player on the fringe should have... just look at the Memphis game... I was real disappointed by that and, apparently, so were the Kings.

Good luck with Desmond with finding the right team. He seemed like a nice guy but he didn't fit with this roster.

He's just another case of athletic non-shooters who age badly. I mean, we're not even talking a guy who actively looks to shoot from the outside, but is really bad at it--we're talking about a guy who will never even touch the three point line, or even take a shot from 15-20 feet. Ever since 2005, his game has always been within 10 feet, and that only makes the aging even worse. And if we were signing him for the defense, he's largely been average as a team and individual defender the past few years, and needless to say he's lost the spring in his step to really get an edge up on the younger guys. So while I admire Mason's body of work, at this stage of his career, and for our team specifically, it was just a bad signing. I also see the Udoka signing the same way, but at least he (supposedly) can shoot the ball so maybe that will be ever so slightly better.

Glad the Maloofs like throwing away money on people like Mason.. I know it's not my money or anything but if they would have came here first we could have saved them a few thousand lol.

I think that probably has to be it, because he's also a very amrginal player -- actually far more marginal over his career than Desmond, but maybe with more left in the tank. If he can just spot up though and hit some threes, that's the more classic roleplayer game and can give us some spacing, which we are going to really need with both Cisco and Kevin gone (and over his career nearly half his FGs have been threes -- he's a born roleplayer at this level and knows it).

But while his threes could be handy with Kevin now gone, its also not a great time to be a non-scoring roleplayer, because we are going to be under nightly stress to get our points barring a Reke explosion.

Mason had a minimum deal that wasn't guaranteed. We drop him for Udoka, also on a non-guaranteed minimum deal, and the money's the same, the only thing that changes is the recipient. A minimum deal for a 14th roster player, I just don't see the problem.

Personally, I think it was the number on the jersey. People were totally confused seeing Bobby Jackson on the sidelines and #24 on the court.

:p
