Kings Rebuilt - 2 deals

Smills91

Starter
Trade 1: Kings & Knicks

Kings trade: Mike Bibby, Kenny Thomas, Francisco Garcia
Knicks trade: Stephon Marbury, David Lee

Trade 2: Kings & Magic
Kings deal: Brad Miller, Shareef Abdur-Rahim
Magic Deal: Carlos Arroyo, Patrick Garrity, Keyon Dooling, Trevor Ariza, Rights to Fran Vazquez

Kings new roster:
C: Spencer Hawes, Mikki Moore, Daryl Watkins
PF: David Lee, Justin Williams, Pat Garrity
SF: Ron Artest, John Salmons, Trevor Ariza
SG: Kevin Martin, Quincy Douby, Keyon Dooling
PG: Beno Udrih, Carlos Arroyo, Stephon Marbury(but out Marbury?)
Rights of Vazquez.

I actually like the trade for us cause we get rid of the bad contracts that we have and will be having cap relief.Plus getting Lee and Ariza in return would be good for the future. The question though is that would the magic accept that deal? This is a team that has extended Dwight to the max and has obviously overpaid for Lewis, So accepting brad and reef would really put them in an ugly situation.

I see David Lee's name mentioned several times on this board but I fail to see what is so great about him. He did well against us but otherwise his stats don't look spectacular.

In the above trade I still see the Kings in much the position they are now and that is with no power forward. I think Mikki would still be the starter at PF with the above roster.

Long winded but I want to get back to the fascination with Lee. Why?

The stats you see now are when he was coming off the bench for zach. He's a rebounding machine and if he averaged 9 off the bench then wow. He showed us he has a post game. Combine an above average post game while averaging double digit rebounds. Its a kings fans dream.

So he has a post game against other teams other than us?

I have a hugely different take on where this team should go and don't want to argue my thoughts. But .... what I want at power forward is someone who can rebound and score over 15 points per game and I'm not sure if Lee can do that now or ever. Just remember, he has built his stats against bench players.

Lee is a rebounding BEAST that is why.

Here would be the trades I would make:

Kings trade: Ron Artest, Kenny Thomas, Quincy Douby
Knicks trade: Stephon Marbury, David Lee, First Round Pick

Kings trade: Mike Bibby, Shareef Abdur-Rahim
Cavs trade: Drew Gooden, Eric Snow, Ira Newble, First Round Pick

G Udrih, Marbury, Snow
G Martin, Garica
F Salmons, Newble
F Gooden, Lee, Williams
C Miller, Moore, Hawes, Watkins

We get two nice young PFs and 2 draft picks plus some big contracts that expire withtin a year.

The team we see now is sans-Bibby, if you add Lee and Drop Kenny it's a no-brainer...we'd have a pretty good team NOW, and potential to rebuild in 2 years.

Well, now that I stuck my nose in. Right now, unless some offer fell into my lap that seemed great, I'd trade Bibby and hope to get equal value in a power forward. A straight up trade should get us a great PF.

Where I differ from most is that I would not trade Artest. Artest is one of the greatest players in the NBA and also seems to be a very good mentor for the younger players. Also he is at the peak of his career.

I don't need to be told the risks but then maybe we need to take the risk. He is the kind of guy we try to trade for and not to trade away. C-Webb was a big risk. We are a small market team and are not going to be fighting for many championships and this guy can help us. I do NOT understand the mentality that wants him to play great just to increase his trade value. If he is playing great, then he is the guy we want. Getting the best or near the best at any position is hard to achieve.

I do NOT agree with any move that leads to our team sucking just to get a higher draft pick. One reason why is that attendance is falling and if we suck more, attendance will fall further. We now have the 26th best attendance in the NBA. The Maloofs have the right to make money to pay for our grand dreams. Also, sucking may adversely effect any chance of getting a new arena. Maybe!

Whether they are billionaires as a family or not is really none of our business. As businessmen, they have the right to make a profit.

I am not as down on this team as most because with Martin and Artest, we have great wings. We also have Salmons and Garcia as backups. We have at the least an adequate point guard in Udrih who should get better. Garcia is an adequate backup.

We have a young center who may be very good.

What we don't have is any power forward and another big to replace Miller as he is aging.

Three years is a long time to wait and prying a free agent away from his team is difficult but we will have the money at that time to get a one or even two great bigs assuming no great big was acquired via trade. We also will have a more skilled and mature collection of "small" guys as all now are young and learning OR will still be in their peak years. This may look attractive to a free agent.

Fire away. :)

Like Piksi said in the intro for tonight's game thread, teams are either making a run for the championship, rebuilding, or wasting time. We have Artest, Martin, Bibby, a few decent role players, and a couple of acceptable rookies. That is not a team that will make a run at the championship, and Artest is likely to walk at the end of the year, since next year will be a player option for him. The only way we could offer him an extension would be for him to accept the option for a year, then for us to let Bibby walk, and give Ron some of the leftover money. But, even if you like that idea, keeping Ron around next year is a very long shot, and the whole plan stinks of option #3, wasting time. If we're not a championship team with Bibby and Ron this year, we won't be next year, and we wouldn't be with Bibby gone the year after.

And this is without considering that Artest is an unstable person and regular source of unwanted drama.

So people want to rip off the bandaids and get the rebuild over with.

Trevor Ariza is now a Laker.

I saw that just now...how did that pass since it doesn't work on the realgm trade machine (BYC1)? It appears to me that Cook and Evans make twice as much as Ariza. BTW the Magic also released Outlaw, not that we would want him but a "salute" to all of his years in the league.

scoring isn't all needed if you got scoring at other positions. doug christie hardly scored only when he was open basically. he focused most of his energy being a disruptive defense presence.

I take it that you don't think that Cisco, Martin, Hawes, Douby, and Udrih are gaining any skills as time goes by. Part of getting youngsters is the willingness to wait until they grow up. I don't understand why having 5 young skilled players is not considered to be "rebuilding." Martin, Hawes, and Cisco aren't bandaids as far as I'm concerned. Martin may become a major star and Hawes looks pretty good. I have my doubts about Douby.

I doubt that Artest will leave. I don't think he ever said he would. We can offer him the most money if he stays three years. I haven't read the cap rules recently so don't know what would happen if he opted out this year. In any case, if he stays here three years (we all can guess what he will do so this is my guess), he can get maximum money if he is worth it and no team can offer more or even the same.

If he leaves this year, we free up money and isn't that the point of many discussions? We have this need for cap space?

There are other reason he might stay. He knows he is well liked and respected by Petrie and the organization, he is very active in the community, and Chuck Person, who he sees as a father figure, is an assistant coach. I wouldn't make a decision based on an assumption that he is going to leave. Then what do we do if he wants to stay?

We also can offer Bibby as much money as he wants. Not that we want to do that but that is always an option. Cap rules always favor the team the guy is playing for and that's us. I still would like to see him traded.

Oh, and finally, I don't necessarily believe there are only three things that teams are doing. That mindset simplifies chatter but ignores the complexities of running an NBA team.

Maybe I am misunderstanding something. Why would we have to let Bibby walk if we kept Ron. Bird rights allow us to sign both.

Christie was always a threat to score. Depending on who the scorers are on the team, the pf has to be able to score in order to AT LEAST be a considered a threat to score.

If you are absolutely accurate, we have nothing to worry about as we don't need a pf as good as I am saying. Let Williams play and things should be fine.

christie was always a threat to score because he had tremendous talent around him. they didn't focus on him because there were other offensive threats that commanded attention. we don't have that type of talent around here. you stick christie on this team and i guarantee he won't be that big offensive threat he was back withteh old squad.

it seems as if you want instant gratification in this rebuilding period. if we do get that stud in the trade, we are still handcuffed w/ bad contracts, no real young talent, no salary capspace. by the time the capspace is open, we will have given extensions to our other young players to keep them here. that will eat up some flexibility to go out and give that big contract to stud player(s). we'll still be in this hole that we are in now..

They are, but a lot of it has been due to injuries and suspensions.
Part of getting youngsters is the willingness to wait until they grow up. I don't understand why having 5 young skilled players is not considered to be "rebuilding."
Martin is a skiiled young player. Hawes may become one. Udrih has been very inconsistent in the past, yet may become one. Cisco is no longer very young, and may not improve much more, i.e., he may never be more than an energy guy off the bench. Douby is also a question mark, not only in regards to how good he will become, but also whether he will ever fill a significant need on our roster. So far, he has only shown that he can be a backup SG, and we're not really in need of those.
Martin, Hawes, and Cisco aren't bandaids as far as I'm concerned. Martin may become a major star and Hawes looks pretty good. I have my doubts about Douby.
Agreed, I never meant that they were bandaids. The bandaids (without even going into the Webber trade) have been Ron, Shareef, John, and Mikki. Players that ate up cap space and kept us from getting good draft picks, without ever giving us any remote shot at a championship.
I doubt that Artest will leave. I don't think he ever said he would.
I believe that last year he text messaged teammates saying that we wanted out, but that's just it with Ron, you never know what he'll do from one day to the next.
We can offer him the most money if he stays three years.
That's not really an option. He has a player option this summer, which he will either accept or walk. After the option year is done, whether he accepts it or not, his contract is over. There's no provision for a third year.
If he leaves this year, we free up money and isn't that the point of many discussions? We have this need for cap space?
Cap space would be nice, but it's not key to anything, because the FA market has been pretty horrible the last few years, and shows no signs of improving. So it alone is not very useful. What we really want are youngsters and draft picks. Trading Ron for a bag of (expiring) chips gets us the same cap space, but gives us a much better shot at a good lottery pick, because a bag of chips is not going to pull out any last minute wins to mess up our chances in the draft. Trading Ron for a bag of chips and a draft pick is better still.
We also can offer Bibby as much money as he wants.
Only if we pay massive luxury tax, otherwise we have nothing to spend. But it's a moot point, since nobody seems to want to give him an extension.

Because signing Shareef, John and Mikki ensured that we would have no money until the 2011 season. If we kept both Bibby and Ron, we'd be paying double for at least one of them (luxury tax).

The Magic were granted a $2.6 million injury exception, due to Tony Battie being lost for the season. They used that exception to make the trade work.

fnordius, I've reached the point where there is nothing more for me to say. All contracts end. Then they get renegotiated and an agreement is made or not. Yes, we've got dead weight. No, I don't want Bibby and if we end up with him, certainly not at a maximum salary. We pay luxury tax for how much over the line we are, not for the entire contract that put us over.

I think we are closer to an agreement on most matters except Artest.

I haven't been around in awhile so I don't know if people realize how many championships this franchize has won and when the last one was. Knowing this fact may bring a little reality into these thoughts of championships. I'm not saying a championship is impossible but just trying to be realistic. One of the major studs of all time, Oscar Robertson, is a part of our history and we won no championship with him. He was special.

I don't need a championship team to enjoy the Kings.

Thanks for the mini debate.
