Kings offering Beno $30+ mil ???

some say it would be a bad move to offer Beno their full mid level. others on the other hand say "well if he actually pans out, then it will be considered a good move by the front office." so its a catch 22 right now. kinda like the Jason Thompson move. Me personally? I like Beno and do not have a problem with what they are offering.

He's definitely, postively not worth the full midlevel...especially 5-years. I think a majority of us have agreed upon that...

An excellent move and a fair price. Starting PGs who have NBA championship rings (2) in a supporting role are the rarest of the rare in PGs. He knows winning and how to play team ball. There are no others available at anywhere near that price who bring his pedigree plus a year with the Kings already.

Lets hope we can keep him at that.

Neither are players with disappointing careers who have big contract years then go back to mediocrity. This feels like Mikki Moore part 2. Another stellar short-sited move by management. Nice job.

Please god no!!! That's the type of contract we'll regret in 2-3 years and will kill our cap room. Atleast get someone with more potential like Louis Williams!

I say it is a good conntract. Look at what other PG got in the past. Heck Bobby Jackson is making 8 million per year. Think about it as good asset to have. PG's are always in demand. Having a solid PG for MLE is a good trade piece.

I'm on the fence on this one. I like Beno and what he brought to the Kings this year, but I don't know if he's the long term solution.

maybe now we can start Quincy douby at point guard? :P i mean now is the time to accelerate him to learning the point

At the full mid-level, Beno would have a contract a little bit better then Leandrhino Brabosa. Is he really at that level?

I think its possible he might be worth that much. Possible -- there were times last year when he was ouor competitive leader out there for us, and he is still young.

But with us in the cap position we are in, contracts like that are doubly damaging. Oddly enough when you use your MLE 15 seasons in a row you have this tendency to choke your cap off.

Not nearly.

But we have seen what typical point guards make in this league, and we have seen that there are slim pickins in the FA market (several stopgaps but no long-term prospects we could afford).

So, if you are GM, what do you do?

If you low-ball Beno and lose him, then you are painted into the corner of needing to pull off a decent trade by summer's end or else pray that Singletary is the 1 in a 1,000 2nd round draft pick find. The trade scenario will be dicey, although we would have Miller and Artest to dangle...just very tough to pull off a big deal, since it takes two to tango.

I guess plan B would be to not worry about picking up all the pieces this summer and just take your chances with a 1 or 2-year signing of one of the marginal FA PGs (JWill, Duhon, etc) until we reach under-the-cap-land.

As a Kings STH, I would rather we make sure we have a decent distributor of the ball and floor meistro in 08-09, and someone that can stay with us for a while. So, even though I don't think Beno is worth the full MLE (defying the average salary thing-y), and I fear his history of injuries, if Petrie offers the full MLE to him, I will not ***** and moan.

Free agents aren't paid what they're worth, they're paid what the market will bear. And you know what? The full MLE might not even be enough if the Clippers step in and offer Beno $7 million.

But all the same, Beno's worth the MLE. He's a starting point guard for a decent team. He has to get better to be the starting point guard on a really good team, but those guys are worth on the order of $10 million. $6 million is a fair price.

He's still young, he's got room for improvement and he's tough and competitive. I think it's a solid move.

Agreed. MLE for 2 years or more with team options - no brainer. 5 years? Well, he is only 26±, so a 5-year deal will expire about when he's peaking, but I'm still not sure if that is the smartest move. Again, we are throwing out max $$$ (for us - full MLE) right off the bat, but it is probably necessary to keep him. Ant that is the only position that we are REALLY hurting right now....

I like what he brings, and I think he will get better with a camp under his belt and more time with the same team/system.

I think that a fair deal. My only concern is him staying healthy. He played pretty well in the second half of the season.

Exactly. So if you really want to blow your full mid level, at least offer a shorter length contract to see if he keeps up the effort that to date he has been unable (or unwilling) to do.

So if we don't overspend, we might lose him to the Clippers? Honestly is that who we are competing with on free agent spending?

And if not Beno who? Yeah! lets go out and get Baron Davis! 18mil! I see no problem getting a steady, proven pg who has been on teams who have won it all(Spurs). He was one of our best players last year. He is only staring to grow as a player and has A LOT left in the tank considering he played behind Tony Parker for a couple of years.

Whether he's worth the MLE or not is irrelevant, he's not worth hurting our cap with YET ANOTHER mle sized contract. When will the madness stop? Man, I hope the clippers outbid us because this is insane. When will the mediocrity end? For two years guaranteed fine, but for 5? That's nuts!

Beno for maybe 3 yrs at around $15.4 mil ??

Before Davis opted out, sources said the Clippers were prepared to make a lucrative long-term offer to Sacramento Kings point guard Beno Udrih. Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy is believed to be enamored with Udrih, who blossomed after leaving the long shadow of Tony Parker in San Antonio. Without a Clippers offer, Udrih will probably re-sign with the Kings for the mid-level exception – perhaps at three years, approximately $15.4 million.

I get where people are coming from but its not a way to build for the future. That's how we ended up with Moore. It was the who else starts at PF if not him? Just because the guy behind him sucks (or doesn't exist), it doesn't mean you overreact.

If your team is not going to be good right now, what difference does it make. Don't hinder your long term plans with moves like these.

I think Geoff's M.O. is to make decisions like this early and take the rest of the summer off. It's not a bad plan actually but it doesn't give me a lot of confidence as a fan.

In 2010/11 only Beno, Martin, Salmons, Hawes, and Thompson would have guaranteed contracts. I don't see how this move kills our cap space for the 2010 off season.
