Kings notes: Loyalty kept Carril here

Kings assistant coach Pete Carril was very close this past summer to becoming Boston Celtics assistant coach Pete Carril.

Boston head coach Doc Rivers had designs on hiring Carril to sit beside him before he was named the Celtics' coach - way before.

And Carril, 74, says he was seriously tempted by the lure of getting back to the East Coast and being considerably closer to his family.

"Pretty close, pretty close," Carril said Sunday night before the Kings faced Rivers' Celtics. "I wanted to get Back East where all my friends are and family is. It's always hard around Christmastime and holiday time and you're not with your family. I thought about going there and how easy it would be to come up to see games."

Carril said he spoke with Rivers, a former broadcaster, whenever Rivers worked Kings contests.

"I had a funny feeling because Doc likes the way we play," the Hall of Fame coach said. "When he was a broadcaster, I talked to him all the time. He always said, 'I like the way you guys play,' and I thought, There's something fishy here."

Carril said it was ultimately his sense of loyalty to Geoff Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations.

"But what it came down to was the strong bond I have with Geoff," Carril said. "And it was overwhelming. That's what did it."

Et cetera - Peja Stojakovic missed his first free throw of the night to end a streak of 36 straight makes, while Doug Christie missed his second to halt a stretch of 27 straight.

• They began the night as the league's Nos. 1 and 2 leaders, respectively, in free-throw accuracy. • The Kings have six wins after trailing by seven or more points.

I think it's psychologically healthy for young players to have a grandfather figure around the locker room and on the practice court. Plus, the guy knows basketball. He looks awfully small and Yoda-like tip-toeing amongst the giants near the Kings bench. I'm glad Petrie keeps him around. Nobody has stepped on him yet. They must be watching out.

I'm still waiting for Carril to bust it out like Yoda did in the Attack of the Clones.

^^ Yeah, definitely reminds me of Yoda. :)
Maybe it's just me, but I look at him and think, "Bilbo Baggins".

Don't know why, but seeing the guy just makes you smile, even when he's not happy.

I completely overlook how Pete Carril looks. Why? Because the Kings are fortunate enough to have one of the best basketball minds in the game. And, that this great guy thinks enough of Geoff Petrie to stay with the Kings, out of loyalty, says an awful lot about Petrie doesn't it?

Yep! It is good to be a Kings fan. :)

^^ Yeah, for some reason, too, I smile when I see him. :D

And I agree with 6th, Carril's sticking around does say a lot about Petrie. It's great to have them both working for the Kings. :)

I think it says even more about Coachie, but that's just my opinion.

By the way....isn't Pete even more important than an assistant coach, in that he was the originator of the Princeton offense the Kings run (in a modified form)?

The guy is a basketball genius! Or to quote Yoda "A basketball genius is he". Well, that's my lame Yoda attempt anyway. :D

I see no disrespect in the Yoda comparisons!

KK!

Sorry, I did not mean to imply that I thought people were being disrespectful. Yoda is cute...and my favorite Star Wars character. I just meant that with his genious, I don't care what he looks like. :)

Sorry back atcha, Sixy! I didn't mean to imply that you were the only one focusing on Coachie's looks but that a number of posters were overlooking HIS loyalty in their praise of Geoff Petrie's genius.

Coachie showed tremendous loyalty and committment to this team by continuing to work and offer his skills to a team on the opposite coast of all his closest friends and his family. I have no doubt that Geoff Petrie played a part in his decision, but that the most important part of his decision was COACHIE'S own loyalty and dedication to the Kings...and that say A LOT more about Pete Carrill than about anyone else.

I know I was heartbroken at the thought of losing him earlier this year and I'll be heartbroken if he decides to leave (either through retirement or to another team) at the end of this season. But I will understand and wish him well if that's his decision. :)

I don't know how functional he is, but it's hard for me to imagine a guy that age wanting to move around the country a lot, especially to take another job.

Oops, if I have somehow misplaced praise, I didn't mean to. I love having Coachie stick with the team, but I didn't mean to fully attribute that to Petrie. I have a lot of respect for Coachie. I just meant to say that his decision does say a lot about HIS own loyalty and the type of person he is and as per the article, his loyalty to Petrie proved a part in the decision - in that sense it says a lot about Petrie. But bottomline is that it's definitely great having him (and Petrie) around for the Kings. :)
