Kings Media Respect/Disrespect Thread

I'm not sure this warrants a thread, but I didn't know where else to put it.

Yes, Kings are only 4-4. Yes, it's early in the season. But somethings are just inexcusable.

During the Suns vs Hornets game, it cut to highlights of Bucks vs Nuggets. Jennings dropped 32 tonight and Stewart Scott said that was the highest any rookie has scored this season so far. Is it that hard to check that Reke had 32 vs the Jazz? Stuff like that bothers me.

I guess we can just use this thread to keep tabs on when the Kings are mentioned, forgotten, ignored, etc. in the media.

Newsflash: analysts and columnists don't watch every game, and mostly ignore the worst teams. I doubt very many have actually watched full games of the kings unless it's against the team they cover. So it's more ignorance and apathy than actual disrespect. That's why I had better predictions about last seasons playoffs than the predictions of most of the ESPN "expert" picks. Most hardcore fans know more about their team than the so called professionals.

Another example of this is media members are now "shocked" at the "unexpected" decline of the hornets and are left wondering what happened when I and a few other hardcore Hornet fans were point blank saying exactly why that team wasn't a contender and was overachieving thanks to Paul carrying a huge load.

So then, what he said was 100% accurate. Brandon Jennings scored 32, which is the most by any rookie this season. Just because Tyreke also scored 32 doesn't negate that statement at all.

The Kings (and Tyreke) got plenty of credit on Sportscenter the night they beat the Jazz. They showed that Tyreke's 32 were the 2nd most ever scored by a 20 year old rookie (behind Marbury's 38) or something like that. I think the Kings will get plenty of press if things continue the way they have been. A ROY award will definitely add some national spotlight. I'm sure ESPN and TNT wish they had a few Kings games on the schedule, already.

Yeah, probably. The new up-and-coming teams always end up playing the most exciting games cause they sneak up on people. And aren't we all sick of watching the Lakers, Spurs, Celtics, and Cavs by now anyway? I know I am.

Mashburn mentioned about watching out for Tyreke. But in a way where he was only going to look for highlights, and "keeping it real" about not watching the Kings. Respect is non-existent to the media when it comes to the Kings.

True, but respect has to be earned and a 4-4 start isn't enough. Yes it's meaningful to us, but .500 is mediocre to the rest of the NBA world. When the Kings are playing .600+ basketball, then I'll complain about a lack of respect.

We will have to earn it. We got plenty of respect back in 98. As long as we keep playing like we have the last few games, people will start to take notice.

I agree that we should earn that respect. We have been terrible and boring for ad infinitum. Yes, small markets ALWAYS struggle with any media attention, it happens in every sport and country.
However, Evans is a habitué on Yahoo NBA Sports page and people know about him a lot now. Being on the Kings squad is not the best marketing help but he is respected among many (I think most) NBA experts and regular NBA fans.

I think you're right for the most part. I feel the Kings hardly ever get media coverage but 32 is the highest a rookie's scored. He just failed to mention another rookie had also scored that high.

Let's wait until we've actually proven something before we start looking for any kind of mention by the media.

Respect is totally and completely different than airtime, BTW. I couldn't possibly care less if they "respect" us or not. It's not going to change how Kings fans look at the team and it certainly better not change how the Kings work on their games. Let the young Kings continue to work together to build something. Once they do, the media won't be able to ignore them - viewers and readers will demand proper coverage.

We've played all of 3 good games now -- we deserve no respect. If we can keep this going for a month or two and they are still ignoring us, then we can start to talk. But they won't, because there is nothing the media loves to latch onto more than a young star. As long as Reke upholds his end of the bargain, they'll begin to talk about him, and by extension, us. Won't be any TV unless he's averaging 25 and we are in playoff contention (the TV schedule is made befor ethe year and they will only change things up if they are missing something pretty big), but the TV always goes to the winning teams. In any case, we were THE WORST team in the league last season. Its going to take a while (more than 8 games) for people to start to notice that isn't true anymore.

And as an aside we were complete media darlings back in '99 and for years tied the Lakers for most national TV games (I think 22 or so a season). For anybody to say it never happens to small market teams is just defying our own history. Get on the upswing, get fun, and the media will follow.

That's true. After last season, it's going to take a lot more than 8 games to earn respect outside of our fanbase. With that said, it's been great the last 5 days of Kings basketball!

Which kinda goes back to the original reason for the thread....if they made mention of Tyreke's 32 when they won vs. Utah, they could have at least said that BJennings 32 tied for the highest scored this season so far by a rookie.

This really has more to do with the fact there is so much attention paid to Brandon Jennings because of how he got to the NBA, to see whether his talent can back up everything. So far it's looking like it is. Tyreke's time (and the Kings) will come as long as he's doing what he's doing now.

if tyreke drops 32 on a top team then the media doesnt have a choice but to talk about it. utah sucks this year just like the hornets... jennings dropped 32 on the nuggets who are a top team... he deserves all of the props that he got from the media.

as far as national coverage... we won 17 games last year and 4 this year, thats 21 games going back to last season.

When we beat the Thunder to win 3 straight and get to 4-4, the Sportscenter highlights were something like: 2 Kevin Durant dunks, the Greene to Thompson alley oop, the halfcourt 3 hit by OKC at halftime, and Kevin Durant missing the late 3 as time expires. Kings win 101-98.


Until we become relevant again they will care less about the Kings. Being from a small market doesnt exactly help either.
