Kings @ Lakers Game Thread

He was gone from the Grizz a year before the trade, but some people fail to acknowledge that.

Some have said that Marc Gasol will be better than his brother... he's taller and bigger, numbers aren't that far off and he's 5 years younger!

Where was all the crying when McHale, still with Minn., handed over KG to his buddy Ainge in Boston?? When Ray Allen was given to Boston for Delonte West AND JEFF GREEN??
I don't remember anyone having a problem with that. (I didn't...that's the way it works.) Which one was a bigger difference maker??...the Lakers went to the playoffs the previous 2 years...the Celtics were last in the east, 2nd worst record in the entire league then went on to win the championship after the trade.

Fixed.

Not quite, you should have also fixed the part about KG being handed to Boston. As far as I'm concerned, the Jefferson guy that Minny got out of this deal justifies it on its own, and that's not even mentioning the pick that would become Jonny Flinn.

Haha dude. If Jerry West is not involved or the trade occured with any other team, bynum would not be a laker. The lakers wanted to trade bynum for Kidd. A PG they do not need for the triangle. So you don't think they'd trade bynum for gasol? West did them a favor.

At the time of the trade it was the 5th pick in the draft...it wasn't known who.

Regardless, the fifth pick in any draft is a commodity. Ray Allen (even aging and expensive) for Delonte West (young and cheap) is kind of a giveaway. But Ray Allen (aging and expensive) for Delonte West PLUS a #5 pick is a lot more equitable.

If you wonder why people didn't complain about the trade, it's because it was seen as beneficial to both sides. Same thing with the Garnett for Jefferson, etc. - seen as beneficial to both sides. And I think that in both cases, the current state of affairs doesn't change that. The Celtics got a championship, the Sonics and the Timberwolves got young, cheap talent in exchange for aging expensive talent.

With the Gasol trade, the difference is that the Lakers didn't give up much. They didn't give up an Al Jefferson type talent. They didn't give up a #5 pick. They gave up a couple of very late first round picks (not nearly as great a commodity), an overpaid, useless center, and a second round pick who had never played in the NBA. It's not surprising that people cried foul, because Pau could have netted the Grizzlies SO MUCH MORE. Now, Marc Gasol has been a very nice surprise, but his trade value at the time was not high at all, and he could have been had for a much lesser piece than Pau. I figure approximately 28 teams in the NBA could have and would have made a more competitive offer for Pau than the Lakers did. (OK, maybe not 28, but I would be shocked if there weren't at least 10 teams willing and able to offer expirings, young talent, and better draft picks for Pau.) People aren't upset that Pau got traded, and in general (although around here there's a lot of anti-laker bias) most people weren't upset that he got traded to the Lakers. People were upset that the Grizzlies accepted such an uncompetitive offer.

The lesson I've learned from both the Gasol and KG trade is: don't ever hire a former Laker or Celtic to be your team's GM! :p
