Kings Hawks idea...

Smills91

Starter
Kings deal:
Mike Bibby
#10

Hawks deal:
Speedy Claxton
Lorenzen Wright
#3 pick

Hawks add an all-star level PG to help them get to the Playoffs while dumping Speedy and only dropping 7 slots

Kings nab Horford at #3 to be the PF of the future and gain a serviceable PG in Speedy to replace Mike.

I'd imagine Petrie follows this deal up with an Artest and or Reef type deal to fill the PG position.

I LOVE it if it is feasable from the Hawks perspective (seems they could command a bigger price for the #3 pick but who knows).

That's a lot to give up (and a lot of salary to take on) to move up 7 spots in the draft. I really like Horford, but man, I don't know. I guess you do it, but it doesn't leave you a whole lot of wiggle room in the future.

What about Bibby for Claxton, Wright, and the #11 pick? That way Atlanta gets to use their #3 pick on the best player available (Brandon Wright) and still get a starting point guard with their #11 pick who's better than any PG in the draft this year. Realistically they'd be picking Acie Law with that #11 pick anyway, who's best case scenario is probably turning into another Mike Bibby. Claxton did nothing for them this year and Wright's contract is expiring.

That gives us a backup PG for 3 years (with a salary that scales down every year rather than up), an expiring contract to knock off another 3 million of Bibby's salary (and a backup C in the meantime which we desperately need) as well as the 10th and 11th picks in the draft. I still think there's a chance Conley falls to 10 (Oden, Durant, B. Wright, Noah, Jianlian, Horford, Brewer, J. Wright, Hawes) and there'll be a couple good SF prospects left for the 11th pick (Jeff Green, Thaddeus Young).

M. Conley Jr., S. Claxton, Q. Douby
K. Martin, F. Garcia
R. Artest, J. Green
J. Williams, S. Abdur-Rahim
B. Miller, B. Haywood*, L. Wright

*(I'd also trade John Salmons to the Wizards for Brendan Haywood to clear up space for Garcia and downgrade a 4 year deal to a 3 year deal.)

If we get the 3, we choose Brandan Wright. No matter what. That kid has more potential than any other PF in the draft.

If Conley doesn't fall to 10, we've traded Mike away without a suitable replacement and we're still pretty much doomed in our frontcourt...

I think people on this board are tending to look at Bibby's potential trade value in the wrong light. We aren't going to trade him away for another PG; if we move him, my best guess it's for a chance at a better 4/5.

Hence my idea of dealing Bibby to the Hawks/Celtics/Grizzlies for their pick to be able to pick up Horford or Wright...that's our best bet IMO.

I like Horford a lot and he's definitely the safer pick, but Wright has much better all around potential and a higher ceiling. It's a tough choice.

I don't think Bibby is enough to nab the third overall pick and remember he has to waive his opt out in order for a trade to happen before july 1st so essentially he has a NTC until then.

Yes, but if Conley does fall to 10, do you make the trade then? The 11th pick would still be available and Atlanta would be choosing between Acie Law or Mike Bibby and getting rid of a contract they don't want (Claxton). Seems like a no-brainer to me. I think it's a good trade for us even if we can't get Conley at 10. We're not going anywhere next season anyway -- we can be patient on filling that starting PG spot. Claxton would be a decent temporary fill-in.

I agree with what you're saying about Bibby, but this trade isn't really trading him for another PG. It's trading him for a decent backup PG with a pretty cheap contract, an expiring deal, and a lotto pick. No one said we have to get instantly better this offseason. Bring in some young guys, trade some bad contracts, and get a coach with a plan and we'd be moving in the right direction. Trying to trade up in the lotto is a mistake if you ask me. You're going to overpay to get a top 5 pick which is just as much of a question mark as the 10th or 11th pick. There's only 2 superstars in this draft anyway and we're not getting them.
