Kings have a bright future.

I think the Kings are on the right path. They selected a kid who is only 19 years old and has the potnetial to be another Chris Kamen. I know. Kamen doesn't blow your socks off but he is a decent center. If you look at our young talent we have some good pieces.

Ronnie Price - Athletic defender that is improving his offensive game.
K-Mart - Another athletic player who I believe can score at will.
Salmons - A Doug Christie type player who has a little more Offensive game and little less defensive game.
Williams - Once again an athletic player who does the dirty work. Boards, Block and Hustle.
Hawes - Solid Post player with the ability to pass out of double teams.
Garcia - Energy player that tries very hard on defense and can shot.

This roster isn't going to win any championships but they will give there all every night. At this point that is all I'm looking for. My expectations aren't high this season but I know I will have fun watching this young group of players leave there hearts on the floor night in and night out.

If Petrie can find a way to move some veteran players for a growing all-star than we are could be looking at a really good team in the future.

I just think that people really underestimate Petrie's ability to be a GM. He has had a plan and he knows what he is doing. Have patience. Support this franchise and watch them grow and develope with me. Let's see what happens before Camp and critisize after they step on the floor.

If you can look at us and say we have a bright future than you can say that about EVERY team in the NBA. Few, if any, are in the midst of such a muddle as us. And that's not pessimism, that's realism.

Now you want bright future? Go talk to Portland. Now THEY have a bright future. That's what one looks like.

Us? One day it will turn around. It always does for all franchises sooner or later. Even if you suck for a decade you can always land a Chris Webber or LeBron James one day and have it all change. But that in no way shape or form makes our future look terribly bright to anyone not wearing bright purple tinted shades. Much needs to happen. Very much. And our assetbase is poor, our financials mess. Its likely going to take a while.

The thing that upsets me is IF Petrie was unable to pull a trade off why didn't he just draft best available athlete/player? Surely Hawes wasn't best available.

Next year we are going to suck even worse than this year (which I am willing to put money on if people don't believe the Kings will be as bad). Why not draft a guy like DeAndre Jordan, or Hibbert next year and draft best available this year? Rather han pick a younger version of a guy that we are TRYING TO GET RID OF... We can agree to disagree that Hawes was the best available based on need. Petrie's pick was a smart choice in a land of unknowns. The best available athlete would have created an even greater uproar, since it would have added another SG/SF to the mix. Calling a 19 yr. old a stiff is crazy.

Ours is hazy at the moment. Will we unload in free agency, which starts in about, oh, two days? Then we will truly be in a rebuild mode. You can't unload Kenny Thomas, trade Bibby (whom couldn't be traded at the time anyway), unload Artest and find a buyer for Miller's contract with the #10 pick. Hopefully it won't take 15 yrs, but it ain't happening overnight.

Portland was a contender as recently as 6-7 years ago, before the ugliness overran them. Much like us they were slow, so painfully slow, to give up the ghost and go for the rebuild. Once they finally did though, but wonderfully aggressive. The way our GM was for one summer nearly a decade ago.

Camino, I must disagree. Not normally the pessimist, I am decidedly pessimistic. This franchise is laden with bloated contracts, underperforming vets, aging tweeners mixed with youthful mediocrity - Kmart excepted. It is going to many years before this ship gets turned around. Petrie (and yes some circumstances that are beyond his control) has created a situation where the franchise is incapable of making meaningful moves. The strengthening of the West means the Kings will be hard pressed to be a playoff team for a looooooooong time.

my summer doesn't really start until a poster posts a message like that.

i was like that a few offseasons ago. learned a bit since then thanks to this wonderful board and its knowledgeable posters. for example, i will not think our MLE pick-up this offseason is going to be "a diamond in the rough" just because he is on the kings. i also won't be expecting any major trades (the past few offseasons and the attitude of the front office have disabused me of this naivete).

The key word is DECENT. So, we are supposed to wait 2 to 3 years just to get a DECENT center like Kamen? Come on! What a waste of time. Settling for mediocrity is one thing, not sure how you can go thru life with that rah-rah attitude, regardless of what the Kings do, but do me a favor...don't pay to see this team til the same effort you go through...like you know...working man hours, taking the time to purchase tickets with those man hours, using those wages to pay for parking, beer, and the time out of your day to go see this team, when little to no effort is spent improving the product.

Artest was our best player last year. Hands down. His contract is not crippling, and he is still somewhat young. He wants to play for Theus...he respects him, and I have a feeling Reggie will get the best out of Ron. Ron NEEDS to stay. Bottom line.

Kings HAVE hit bottom...the 9 teams ahead of the Kings in the draft got better. We didnt.

Maybe the Clips. Maybe the T-Wolves (until they trade Garnett for young talent). Maybe Atlanta. (Who has more PFs than Atlanta?) Celtics, although they probably will be better for the 2 years that Allen plays. Philly?

If we had a 7-game series with any of the above, I wouldn't rush to Las Vegas to put down the $.

They did not have a pick this year, they are locked into long term contracts of Murphy and Dunleavy, Daniels and Tinsley are under investigation, they just offered to trade their best player for Lamar Odom and Tracey Morgan and they will be just good enough again next year to miss out on Rose or Mayo.

Besides that, maybe the Clippers and then us.

I think that is the problem right there. I'm very worried that the trade market for Bibby and Artest is barren. Maybe Petrie is out there playing hardball, but what if Miami just didn't want to send us the 20th pick for either of those guys? I think its very clear that no team ahead of us in the draft wanted any part of them.

My hope at this point is that maybe we can trade one or both of those guys in-season for future draft picks and expiring contracts. If Bibby in particular comes back in shape and healthy his trade value can rise.

Either way, I truly feel the Kings today have maybe the BLEAKEST future in the NBA based on their salary cap and roster. I still trust in Petrie however, and that's the only reason I think we can be good again within a few years.

You do realize, even if your wrong, and they do make some trades, that we won't be winning a championship this next year right? Like Bill Murray says, "baby steps...baby steps..."

I've been a fan since they moved to Sacramento (I still have that stupid theme song they had back in the mid-80's "We Built This City On Rock-n-Roll" still stuck in my head after all these years!).
