I never said Smith will make us playoff contenders. But he is a PF, and we need a PF more than we need a C right? Smith can rebound, and we need a rebounder more than we need a stiff right? Smith is athletic, and we need to become more athletic than to get another slow stiff right?

Smith is the type of guy that can float from PF to C. Hawes is the type of guy if you put at PF will get dunked on.

I forsee Hawes becoming the most posterized player in history behind Bradley lol.

Come on though.. Look at the stats the Team USA put up against "inferior competition". By that logic everyone on the team that got more than 10 minutes should have scored 20 a night. It's just not a good comparison anymore to make. I would rather see him against elite ncaa players than make that judgement on a game by game basis. Acie Law and Spencer Hawes are best to be avoided. Both are viewed as late-lottery picks, but they look like solid second-rounders from here. Hawes has an unimpressive rebound rate, which is a huge red flag considering he was bigger than everyone he played against. And for all the talk of his great post skills, he had a run-of-the-mill 55.0 true shooting percentage and didn't even have the best PER on his mediocre team (that belonged to Jon Brockman). A lot of folks think he can become a quality pro post player; based on his numbers, I just don't see it.

actually we have 3 PF and only 1 center. We continue to play our PF's at Center hence some of our problem maybe this will help.

Then please enlighten me. I don't know your rep but i would love to hear why you think Hawes with all his skills offensively is going to be Joe Klien? Smith who's numbers you use to defend your position that he is the better prospect did play in a very weak conference. How can you say he's the better rebounder when he was going against scrubs night in and night out? Smith is getting drafted as a athletic big man prospect and because he has some sort of face up game.

My point is that if his low-post skill was really that impressive, I would expect it to manifest itself in something better than 15ppg on 53% shooting. 15 ppg is fine, I would just think he should score more efficiently than that if he's really that advanced. My guess is that his lack of athleticism prevents him from getting easy points off explosive plays aournd the rims (dunks, ORB, etc.). So the only way Hawes can even SURVIVE is by using an impressive display of moves.

BTW - I wouldn't pick those stats apart that much if he brought other things to the table, but he doesn't.

BTW2 - All the players you mentioned shot over 60% from the field. Except for maybe Horford they're all considered pretty raw offensively. How did they do it?....Athleticism and explosive plays around the rim.

Look, if he "survives" by destroying kids with his offensive abilities instead of brainless knee-jerk hustle plays that are often more lucky than skilled, then more power to him. I'm not complaining.

And scoring at a 53% clip is pretty impressive if you are actually creating that offense. Some big men end up with 50% scoring in the boxscore but had several hustle put-backs. So when you give them the ball to actually score on their own, they are shooting more like 30%. I'd rather have a guy that I can flip a coin on him scoring every time I give him the ball.

This Brad Miller comparison is nonsense. I doubt any of you making the comparison have seen Hawes play a full game. Hawes has the most developed low post offensive game of any freshman i have seen this decade... not so much like Brad Miller. From day one he's going to be one of the better passing centers in the league, which is something i thought Kings fans could understand has great value in this league. Hes going to be a one of the better offensive centers in this league even without the elite athleticism. His lack of great athleticism is going to make it hard for him to be a great rebounder but he's a legit 7 footer and if he adds the weight, which is one of the easier things for a player to do, he will be a good rebounder.

On a personal level this was a easy pick for the Kings. This team needs help on the front line as much as any team in the league. Even with the possibility of a Artest trade the Kings have some nice players at the sf spot in Garcia and Salmons. The sf slot is also the easiest position to find quality in the nba. You don't pass on quality big men when it's a desperate need.

I watched this kid play 10+ times in a quality Pac-10 and this kid is going to make alot of you eat your words. I love Al Thorton and Nick Young but this was far and away the best pick for the Kings. He's gonna be a top 10 center in this league for many years to come, which might not be the superstar everyone wanted but if you look at this realistically thats great value for the 10 pick. For all you talking Chris Mihm, Mark Blount, Brad Miller, ext, ext get ready to be pleasantly surprised.

Aside from Greg Oden. Spencer Hawes and Brandan Wright are the ONLY 2 freshmen big men taken in the lottery. The rest were all Juniors Noah, Horford, Thorton was a senior. Yi is 22. Hawes is only 19. 3 years ago all those guys were freshmen in college. 3 years ago Hawes couldn't drive yet he still deserves to be a lottery pick despite being 3 years younger than the competition. Including Jason Smith

Brad in his prime would get you 10 rebs/gm, and maybe even thug you. Hawes...has a lot to prove. If you're a post playing center (i.e. always inside) and you get outrebounded by most small forwards, that ain't good.

The gap ebtween 15 and 10 and 15 and 7 is immense. One guy is playable. The other is almost more troubel than he's worth. You'd rather have a 10 and 10 guy. Unless you have Bonzi Wells, nobody else on the team is so well positioned by size or position to grab rebounds or block shots as your center. If he doesn't do it, who will? And how?

Hawes has a definite NBA level skill, but if he does not do more, there is bust potential here.

With no D in the middle still, this must mean that Mike Bibby will be a goner. We REALLY need a point guard who can stay in front of his man and deny penetration - especially when we have big, white stiffs as the last line of defense.

He's not explosive. He can shoot jump hooks with either hand, has very good feet, he's going to be a guy who can get the position he wants in the post, he's pretty good with the mid range jumper and he's going to get better with that. Good free throw shooter. If people want to make a Brad Miller comparison, I'd say this: Miller in his prime was a poor man's Hawes.
