Kings co-owner wants mayor removed from arena negotiations

Um, aren't there 4 brothers? George, Joe, Gavin and Phil? I know I could look in one of my back media guides, but unless my memory is completely gone, I'd swear there are four of them.

I think you're right. I don't know why George runs the show. I love what Chris Lehane said though.

How can they not be forced to sell if they not only don't negotiate in good faith, but it's gotten to the point no one can even deal with them? Stern has got to do something here.

I'm curious about something related to that. If the quotes from that Anaheim City Council member (I can't remember her name) are to be believed, she was doing a form of negotiation with George Maloof while the NBA and the City of Sacramento were still in discussions. I'd think that might be considered some kind of breach, at least of ethics on her part, if nothing else. This whole deal has so much smarm attached to it you can't ever get enough of it off to see the real picture.

I hate the Maloofs.

Because he's considered the smart one. What does that tell you?

I don't know what it tells BMiller52, but what it tells me is that my comment in another thread about The Three Stooges isn't that far off the mark. :p

You know, in reading that latest article again, I can't help but wonder if George was running a massive bluff, hoping the city would agree to renegotiate so that they could get better terms. When Johnson called the bluff, George and Co. are left with a losing hand and are trying desperately to find a way back into the game. Make sense?

Is that something temporary, as in if George actually kicked his habit he might become sane once again? If sane they might sell, if not they might attempt to sue.

This is the part of the story I just don't understand, and I heard G. Maloof say this more than once yesterday.....

Maloof reiterated that their decision to pull out late was because they only had eight business days to evaluate the terms, which included Anschutz Entertainment Group as the operator of the proposed city-owned facility, before the city's March 1 deadline to provide a financing plan to the NBA.

I always thought that the March 1 deadline was Maloof/NBA/Deadline for relocation. Yet he is trying to peddle the lie that it was a city imposed deadline. Am I missing something???

Statement from Chris Lehane Executive Director of #ThinkBig
"As their bizarre press conference laid bare for all to see, dealing with the Maloofs is like dealing with the North Koreans - except they are less competent. In Maloof-world, facts are fiction; truths are half-truths; and promises are broken promises. The City of Sacramento deserves better."
Statement from Chris Lehane, Executive Director of Think BIG:

This is actually a very powerful statement from a very major pro arena figure. I can't imagine he'd say something like this without the knowledge of other team members/consultants. This seems to indicate an organized campaign to make sure the public perceives the Maloofs in a certain way. Can't say I'm against it. Seems Lehane is taking on the bulldog role. I like it. Someone on the team needs to be delegated to speaking the truth/giving gut level emotional responses.

The city had a deadline of March 1 to come up with a financing plan. It just happened to coincide with the league mandated deadline of March 1 for teams to file relocation requests.

I'm sure it helps if the patient wasn't already a narcissistic sociopath to begin with.

You are correct. Phil actually was a senator for a term or two in my state of New Mexico.

Kinda funny how everyone forgets about Phil. He actually seems like the smartest of the bunch for keeping his distance from the others.

As I have witten on here in the recent past, I was giving the Maloofs and the process the benefit of the doubt leading up to the BOG meeting. I was wanting to be patient and see if the sides could work some details out and this plan could keep moving forward.

However, my perspective change when I saw the press conference with George and his consultants in action. George seemed irrational to me. His off the cuff idea to refurbish PBP was a wtf moment for me. It seemed almost delusional given the history of this thing. I was almost scared for him.

Many on this board have been postulating theories on where the Maloofs are going with this thing. One theory should probably be that they have no idea what there doing. No plan. Just confusion.

I don't hate the Maloofs. I kind of feel bad for them. It's not easy to watch a once proud family name go straight down the crapper. This is a very strange thing to watch unfold.

That's how you know the Maloofs have totally lost all respect, when VF21 pulls out that strong word. It's a real pity that they fell so low, all their cred is totally shot and they don't even know it...

Maybe Think Big should flood the City of Anaheim with a bunch or Requests for Information on all documents, emails and conversations they've had with the Maloofs in the last year...

Could be interesting to see if they've continued "negotiating" with them while wasting our time, i mean "negotiating" with us.

I'm sure he must be very proud of his brothers.

Probably why he's kept his distance in all this BS. Though really...in all this mess, have I missed ANY response from Gavin/Joe? I didn't get to see the press conferences so I've relied mostly on this forum for my news/updates/links.

If they had invested their money into something that was supposed to help someone and just went south or hell even a ponzi scheme...I MIGHT feel bad for them. While they actively and publicly pee on their family's name, it's a lot harder to feel bad for them...

I suppose I might regret this at some point, but I couldn't help myself.

lol... I think George should be Moe, since Moe was always the "leader" of sorts of their shenanigans. Curly and Larry never really had the ideas, and just followed along blindly and idiotically...but...solid effort, and officially my new wallpaper.

You're probably right but during the press conference yesterday, when George was babbling nonsensically and gesturing wildly, I was struck by his resemblance to Larry. :)

or maybe for the last home games we got we should really try and sell out and make it to the news all over the world with a chant "sell the team" for almost the whole game....will deff make world wide sports news im sure the magoofs are not going to be there cause if they are theyll be hearing stuff from me

I LOVE this idea. I know it's childish but it sure makes sense. Ive seen soccer fans do this in England when ownership has screwed up their favorite team. They are loud and they make their displeasure known. It's an awesome thing to behold.

So...something I haven't seen asked yet, but does this mean George Maloof now wants to return to negotiating for the arena?

The maloof's don't want to negotiate. Negotiating implies making concessions so both parties are satisfied. The maloofs want the city to foot the entire bill while they receive all profits.

This is just posturing to the nba that tge city won't talk to them while they maje a committed effort.

Keep in mind that George Maloof used the logic that since he is a tenant, he shouldn't pay for pre dev costs.

Yet, as a "tenant" he he asking for all kinds of power over the design and additional revenue streams such as HALF of the naming rights revenue (he's already getting that), revenue/control over signage, and other revenue streams that no "tenant" has ever received.

Every other owner obviously must be thinking that George Maloof is insane. Not to mention they are ashamed he's part of their club.

As KJ mentioned, the deal on the table is a deal that every other owner would jump at the chance to take, and that's likely BEFORE the NBA agreed to front the entire Maloof portion of the cost.

I'd love to have a finance person break down what the actual annual cost of playing at the new arena would be with the lease payments + the loan payments back to the NBA for the 67mil. Then, add up projections of what their revenue would be compared to where they are now. Basically, to run the numbers as if you are the Maloofs, and then share them with the public. I'm sure the city and/or the NBA has done this. They know the exact details according to the best projections that can be made. If it stands that the Maloofs would stand to increase in yearly net profit simply by moving into the new arena, their leverage for getting support from other owners for a move would take a severe hit, not that there's any support left at this point anyway. It's just good to be able to see the numbers.

Ha! Totally fair. Let's be honest...the analogy makes sense no matter who is playing whom.

So...with Stern, HOPEFULLY the BoG, KJ and the city of Sac all on the Kings' side, I have to feel some hope that maybe we just have to put up with a bunch of S*it in the short term and that ultimately this will be the turning point for the Kings. The Maloofs being as broke as they apparently are, how could they possibly fight the whole process and think they have a shot at moving? I'm either INCREDIBLY concerned because they know something nobody else does, or INCREDIBLY confident the Maloofs' days as owners of this team are coming to a close. However..I have been known to be overly optimistic about things, and this realization is making me kinda sad. Samueli or no Samueli, it's up to the league to approve a move right/

And near the end of his public tirade, he explicitly stated the cost to the city would be less if PBP was remodeled. Seriously, why would the city finance the piece of junk when they are neither tenants nor owners. Sacramento can't be the only business partner they have done this to. I wonder how many necks they had to step on to get where they were.

Probably not many...They were set up with their fortune by a legitimate businessman in their father. They didn't earn their way to this place.
