Memphis guard Tyreke Evans, who is believed by many to be the leading candidate for the team's No. 4 pick in the draft that is just hours away, was the driver in a 2007 shooting in which his cousin, 18-year-old Jamar Evans, killed 19-year-old Marcus Reason from the passenger seat of the car. Tyreke Evans was not charged after a police investigation, but the story resurfaced Tuesday when Jamar Evans was sentenced to nine to 20 years in jail after pleading guilty to third-degree murder and firearm charges.

ok so im not a lawyer or anything but the guy that committed the crime was charged with 3rd degree... doesn't that mean that it was reckless and not intentional???

also being that no charges were brought against Evans im assuming thats because he had no idea what was about to happen or that anything was going to happen.
 
If they couldn't find a reason to charge him with anything, I don't think it's a significant issue.

Having said that, I got a yucky feeling in my stomach when I read that. I do not want to see our team subjected to the kinds of problems other teams have endured with players and gun-related incidents. Maybe I'm just a little too old and wrapped up in silly notions like "character" but this REALLY bothers me.

Got that same sick feeling myself. Maybe unfounded, but it really bothers me.
 
I like Evans. I think he has potential and I wouldn't have minded seeing him in a Kings uniform. I truly wish I could say without hesitation that this whole thing doesn't mean a thing ... but I can't. I keep thinking about the crap with Allen Iverson, the gun, his naked girl-friend, etc. We survived all the drama of Ron Artest. I know this could be a situation that never happens again but I don't know if I would be able to accept the "worst case scenario" possibility if I were doing the drafting.
 
I heard about this when he was headed to Memphis. I didn't know he was driving I just though he was in the vehicle. Doesn't bother me too much, although major it's the only incident he has been involved in and he was never charged.
 
He doesn't seem like a thug. I"m thinking its just a situation where he's just a 17-year old kid who made a mistake of surrounding himself with thugs.

I'm more worried that when he's in the NBA and makes those millions, that he'll be tempted or feel obligated to still associate himself around those misfits because they grew up with him and knew him before he made it big.

I do not want to preach but I am so tired of the "he was just a kid who made a mistake" excuse so prevalent about so many of these gun-related incidents.

Hello? I don't care if he's a kid or not. If he's driving a car and his passenger KILLS SOMEONE with a freaking gun, there are problems. And the idea of that becoming part and parcel of the reputation of the Sacramento Kings disgusts me. Period.

And you're entirely right. This happened when he wasn't making millions. What might happen when he is?

Yes, I'm probably over-reacting but this isn't jaywalking or running over the neighbor's cat. This was murder. A plea bargain got it down to third-degree murder and firearm charges...

I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone but I'm reasonably sure there are people in the draft who haven't been involved in fatal shootings.

Yes, I'm probably over-reacting but this isn't jaywalking or running over the neighbor's cat. This was murder. A plea bargain got it down to third-degree murder and firearm charges...

I agreed. There's a good possibility that he'll still hang with the old friends (possibly bad influence?) when he's making the millions. Like VF21 said, the "worst case scenario" in the back of my head really is the deal breaker for me.
 
Yeah we gotta remember that some of these players are born into and live in really bad situations... I know people like to judge these players characters by things they did/were around/etc. when they were teenagers. i honestly believe that in some of these environments these kids sometimes cant help but to get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time at least once. But honestly I only think there's an issue if the player was actually charged with a serious crime or if theres a history of bad things going on... and...

Everything in this case involving Evans seems to point he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time...

I think what hes done before and after that is more important... It looks like hes had no other problems and his coaches love his character... you've only heard good things about him... so this "thing" doesn't worry me one bit.

whoa whoa whoa!!! look seriously i doubt any of us here know the details of what ACTUALLY happend... keep in mind the defendant was only charged with 3rd degree so its not as cold blooded as your probably thinking... who knows what the heck might have gone down?!?!?

I think the fact that Evans wasn't even charged with a single count of anything is a deal breaker for me... that and it seems like he had stayed out of trouble before and has since that incident...

everything i've heard is hes a leader and a GOOD character guy...

I would agree to an extent but would disagree with this: A "wrong place at the wrong time," situation would be that he was a passenger or a onlooker.. since he was the driver, it kind of insinuates that he very well knew what he was doing and what he was involved in.
 
This has all been known for a long time, so it should already be baked into teams' assessments of him.
 
I understand why people would be freaked out by this, but at the same time I have yet to hear anything negative about Evans the person. He has spent the last two years incident free with a lot of eyes on him. I don't see much of a pattern here. I'll give a 17 year kid from a crappy situation the benefit of the doubt on this one.
 
I think I have to agree with VF21 at this point without knowing more about the case. Driving in a car with your "Cousin" who shoots somebody is not being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I also don't understand how people could look at what he has done before and after and come to the conclusion that he is really a good person.
 
I can understand both sides. All I'm gonna say is, when we are on the clock and he's not head and shoulder better than other options. Then his character/past could come back and haunt him....
 
well heres a link to one of the articles about what happend... I looks like the dude definitely meant to shoot the other guy... but it appeared that Evans knew nothing about what was going on...

Now sorta like i said some of these players cant avoid trouble sometimes... It looks like Evans was just picking up his cousin... its not like he had bad friends this was a freakn family memeber..

Some logic people. If the cops though Evans got in the car with the intent to go shoot this kid he would have been charged. I don't know the details of this case but the fact that he wasn't charged leads me to believe that Evans biggest crime here is hanging out with a scum bag family member. I hope he has matured and chooses his company better. Kid was 17 and took a ride with the wrong person, hate to see him condemned for that.

Hey, we rage against people who drive drunk, have threesomes, or don't hire good dog-sitters. Evans was involved in a murder. I doubt that this pleases our FO a bit.
