Kings after Ron Artest walks away..

OK, some of you think i am a crazy trade thread starter guy maybe. but i am trying to look at the bright side today. lets say artest walks away. thats 8 million off the books. When does he have to opt out by? what do you see happening when he does walk away?

Seriously?
Sign a rookie or three and some scrubs, whomever seems cool... maybe Barnes if he will come cheaply + resign Beno to the MLE; then just go forward with Miller/Moore/Salmons/Martin/Udrih as the starters.

When 2010 rolls around with more quality free agents available, the Kings will be able to (hopefully) free up enough cap room to sign someone neat AND with a glut of free agents, the price to land a free agent will be reduced to some degree.

What do you see happening if he does not walk away? What do you see happening if the Kings end up resigning him? You never know, these things could happen.

RonRon walks = $8.45M of salary off the books next year
Hawks trade = $9.5M more salary off the books (Lue, Johnson and Wright)
Justin Williams&Dahntay Jones come off books next year = minus $1.5M more

Thats $19.5M lower than now leaving $12M-$15M of cap room!!! And I have faith in Geoff to steal us a big one.

So lets have fun the next 29 games then see if Byron Scott can take New Orleans to the finals.

Miller/Moore/Salmons/Martin/Udrih as the starters = lottery.

Miller/Moore/Artest/Martin/Whoever = '08 lottery anyway, it's just more of the same.

On to the thread's question...
I see three main ways this can go. From worst to least bad, they are:
1) we sign Artest to an extension
2) Artest decides to stay in Sac next year
3) Artest walks for nothing this summer

With possible trades, etc., this is really too broad a range to summarize neatly. If we are to assume the best case -- he walks -- then we end up with one or more replacements who are worse ballplayers and more stable people. Hopefully they will be young, but they might not. Then, assuming no other changes, we head into a season of around 30 wins. Hopefully most fans would think the games were more fun to watch. I doubt that Ron's departure, alone, would get us any early draft picks.

So we'd be 2/3 of the way to blown up, with some more demolition and most or all of the reconstruction still to go.

The other possibilities are too depressing for me to consider right now. I'm sure we'll all fill those in in our nightmares, anyway.

Actually no. Haven't done the numbers, but I think someone has done that in another thread. We might be lower by about 10M compared to this year's salary (lower after extension of Martin, and resigning of Beno), but we won't have much cap room (possibly none).

The risk is that Geoff might try to add another vet at MLE for two years:mad:

There is a fourth possibility, which is the best case scenario. While chances are small, we might be able to S&T him, once he opts out.

There aren't a lot of teams who can pay him the kind of money he would want if he opts out. Unless his agent is a complete idiot (like Bonzi's), he shall advise him to opt out only if he feels he can hit a jackpot somewhere else. So, a S&T might be his best chance of earning a big payday.

The West shall remain brutal next year too. Two very good teams (45 win range) shall miss the PO, and four 50 win teams shall get out in the first round. At least some of them shall look towards him to take them to the next level. Will any of them be brave enough to take a long term flier on the guy, and give us some assets? Unlikely, but one never knows. We can only hope.

Well, it sucks that we didn't at least get a pick for him but either way he needs to play somwhere else

Did you factor in Martin's extension?

They will look like a bad Atlanta Hawk team with key players such as these:

Steve Hawes (I mean Spencer).
Tyronne Lue
Sheldon Williams
Mikki Moore
Beno Udrih
Johnson

If you don't like that you don't like NBA basketball!

In fairness the squad may well win half its games, but even teams at 50 might not make the playoffs in the West. Another disappointing trade deadline day in a long line of them. The Kings have been waiting for Godot too long.

Yeah it really sucks having a guy on the team that can dominate his man defensivly and that has to be doubled on offense and stills powers through both of them and score. We should go back to a weak 3pt shooter that can't man up a tuperware party.

Now with Bibby gone Ron and Kevin should thrive as no plays have to run for Beno it will be all about them and the 25 pt nights for both of them should be constant now.

I was affraid of a trade and then we would have all been singing a Cinderella song (One of my favorite hairbands btw) "Don't know what you got till its gone."

The myth about having to win 50 games to get the 8th seed is a common misconseption I have heard alot. Thats not true. These teams now have to start playing each other the last 2 months of the season and 45 wins will do it which is only 4 games over .500

I dont understand what some of you are watching.

Do you feel that Martin is on the verge of being an All Star? I do
Do you feel that Miller is playing at close to All Star level this season? I do
Do you feel that Cisco is about to become an outstanding NBA player? I do
Do you feel that Ron is a top 5 SF in the league right now? I do
Do you feel that 19 year old Spencer Hawes is actually playing fairly well when he gets the PT? I do
Do you feel that Hawes could be as good or better that Miller in 2-3 seasons? I do
Do you feel Theus has done a good job this season? I do
Do you feel that Beno was a steal and is a solid PG? I do
Do you feel this team will win 41 games this season? I do which means they would likely have won 50 if they were healthy all season.

Not many teams can go from a 60 win team and turn over the roster in a short 3-5 years and be competitve again. I am pretty happy with this team and how the young players are starting to step up.

I am happy today.

Me Too! :)

Of note, only Portland and the Clips have played less games against western conference teams then us.

Errr.........NO!

Since Martin's extension kicks in next season we we have pretty much no cap space available to us to use on FAs.

Unless he changes his mind again, as he has like twice in the last two weeks.

I think it's anybody's guess until some papers are signed this summer.
