Kings add big man coach

According to his wikipedia, it sounds like he was much more of a defensive/rebounding presence in his playing days than an offensive threat. That should be good for the young bigs, they all suck at D right now. I also like that he was an assistant with Boston when they won the championship a few seasons ago and how he won a championship himself back in the day. Doesnt seem like adding him to the staff could hurt, thats for sure.

Great news!!! Championship pedigree since Ray won a Ring with GSW in 1975, so he has been there and done that. Cousins, Whiteside and JT should learn a new trick or two.

How many people are old enough to know who Clifford Ray is. :) I don't know if these guys are teachers, but it is definitely a good shot to hire English and Ray.

Too bad mchale's a coach right now. He's the big man to teach post work to cuz; groundbound footwork. None of the dreamshake, sky hook stuff of higher jumpers.

Love it. Ray was almost exclusively a defensive/rebounding presence during his career and was damn good at it. Smart is certainly bringing in some great former players to mentor these guys; hopefully they turn out to be great coaches as well

Correction.

Ray on MY 74-75 NBA championship team. I was a listening fan that season. Radio. Warriors. Won out of nowhere. Of course they had Rick Barry but no one suspected they'd do it. I also subscribed to the SF Chron then and now. It was great.
Can he coach? Can anybody coach? Sometimes I wonder. Sure brings back memories.

Ah...pteradactyls soaring through the air...the opposing center getting eaten by a TRex the night before Game 2...aw...memories. :p

Not only know who he is, but watched him play many many times. I was a big Warrior fan then. Rick Barry and Company. Al Attles was the head coach. Ray was only around 6'9", but his arms were so long his hands almost touched the ground. He wasn't much of a scorer, but a very good defensive player and rebounder. I remember one time when, I believe it was a Killer Whale or some such critter at Marine World had something stuck in its throat, and they got Clifford Ray to reach down and pull it out. Don't remember the whole story, its been too long ago, but you get the gist of it.

Ray as a player was one of those guys that wasn't overly gifted, but overaccheived. He was very fundamentaly sound, and those are the types that usually make good coaches. I'll tell you one thing. He won't take any crap off of anyone. He was one tough hombre when he was a player.

Trilobytes getting into the Stegasaurus steaks again....

I too am from the Mesozoic era and remember watching Ray play. However, I lived during the [FONT=VERDANA,ARIAL,HELVETICA][SIZE=-1]Cretaceous period so my memory isn't quite as clear as some of you old timers. :)

Its ok, I like to kid you decrepit relics, but it wasn't all bad -- the cavewomen back then were hot!

This is great good sport!!! Thanks you guys. It's years like that one that can grab you and make a fan for life. I never saw a live game at that time but radio worked pretty good for me. Brick, that photo doesn't look much like the pteradactyls I remember.

When Rick Barry was on the KNBR, he used to say that Clifford Ray was one of the best big man coaches in the NBA (that was a few years ago). Obviously Barry played with Ray which could have some influence on his opinion.

FOr what it's worth, he's left a wake of talented defensive big men whereever he's gone.
