Kings 2009-2010 NBA Draft:

How mad is everyone going to be when we get the 4th pick and get Greg Monroe? Oh yeah, and Cousins is still available...

Huge day yesterday for the Kings! GSW and Detroit pick up wins and we are now in a 3 way tie for 3rd worst record!!

How mad is everyone going to be when we get the 4th pick and get Greg Monroe? Oh yeah, and Cousins is still available...
I have learnt over the years that when it comes to drafting, never doubt Geoff Petrie, especially with top 6 or so picks! :)

If GP thinks Monroe is our man then its fine by me!

I am hoping that we buy another late 1st rounder. An awesome draft would be Cousins and if we can somehow pick up Xavier Henry as well.

There's been a lot of talk about just needing a defensive center, or power forward. So I've compiled a list of those that would come under consideration. Some of these guys are considered just defensive players, and some are considered both defensive and offensive players. So all I'm giving you are their rebounds and blocked shot stats. Since they all played different amounts of minutes, I broke it down to how many minutes per rebound or blocked shot. If you want to take that out to per 40 be my guest.

Soloman Alabi: 1 rebound every 4.1 minutes.
Cole Aldrich: 1 rebound every 2.7 minutes.
Epke Udoh: 1 rebound every 3.6 minutes.
DeMarcus Cousins: 1 rebound every 2.3 minutes.
Daniel Orton: 1 rebound every 3.9 minutes.
Derrick Favors: 1 rebound every 3.2 minutes.
Ed Davis: 1 rebound every 2.9 minutes.
Jarvis Varnado: 1 rebound every 3.0 minutes.
Hassan Whiteside: 1 rebound every 2.9 minutes.
Art Parakhouski: 1 rebound every 2.5 minutes.
Keith Benson: 1 rebound every 2.9 minutes.
Dexter Pittman: 1 rebound every 3.2 minutes.
Greg Monroe: 1 rebound every 3.5 minutes.

Soloman Alabi: 1 blocked shot every 10.9 minutes.
Cole Aldrich: 1 blocked shot every 7.7 minutes.
Ekpe Udoh: 1 blocked shot every 9.5 minutes.
DeMarcus Cousins: 1 blocked shot every 13.3 minutes.
Daniel Orton: 1 blocked shot every 9.6 minutes.
Derrick Favors: 1 blocked shot every 13.3 minutes.
Ed Davis: 1 blocked shot every 10.0 minutes.
Jarvis Varnado: 1 blocked shot every 6.7 minutes.
Hassan Whiteside: 1 blocked shot every 4.8 minutes.
Art Parakhouski: 1 blocked shot every 16.5 minutes.
Keith Benson: 1 blocked shot every 9.3 minutes.
Dexter Pittman: 1 blocked shot every 10.2 minutes.
Greg Monroe: 1 blocked shot every 22.3 minutes.

Well we can see the Greg Monroe isn't a shot blocker. I think the one that surprised me was Alabi. His reputation is as a shot blocker. But he's not even better than Pittman in that dept. His rebounding is just average. He would provide little in the way of offense, so you would be relying on his improvement in the future. Pittman actually fared better than I thought he would. But I must add the caveat that he only played a limited number of minutes. So although his numbers weren't bad, it would be hard to project them out to 40 minutes right now. But it does show promise for the future.

I thought Ed Davis fared well and the real surprise to me was Daniel Orton as far as shotblocking goes. Anyway, just another thing to digest and pick apart.

Interesting numbers. Ed Davis sticks out to me as well. The per-minute numbers seem to help his case, at least in terms of rebounding and shot-blocking -- often cited as his strong suits. I'm also surprised that Favors and Cousins end up the same in shot blocking since Favors has more of a reputation as a shot blocker. Alabi's stats don't impress but I'd still take a long look at him if he lasts until the second round.

I'll try not to be too disappointed if we don't end up with a top 4 pick in this draft. It's looking like we'll have a good shot at it, but even if we don't there's some intriguing prospects in the 5-7 range as well. The late lottery looks a lot more promising this year than usual -- especially for teams in need of big men (ie everybody but the Lakers and Magic).

College stats have a true gem in kenpom.com which better reflects players abilities than simple per minute stats. So here's DR%, OR% (percentages of rebounds pulled by a player compared to rebounds pulled by both teams on that end of the floor when player was on the floor) and SBl%(amount of blocks compared to the number of defensive possessions when player was on the floor):

Soloman Alabi: 11.5 OR%, 15.8 DR%, 10.4 SB%
Cole Aldrich: 13.5OR%, 25.7 DR%, 13.0 SB%
Epke Udoh: 12.8 OR%, 17.9 DR%, 11.0 SB%
DeMarcus Cousins: 19.6 OR%, 25.1 DR%, 7.5 SB%
Daniel Orton: 10.2 OR%, 16.4 DR%, 10.6 SB%
Derrick Favors: 12.3 OR%, 20.5 DR%, 7.9 SB%
Ed Davis: 10.7 OR%, 24.2 DR%, 9.5 SB%
Jarvis Varnado: 10.5 OR%, 23.2 DR%, 14.2 SB%
Hassan Whiteside: 11.7 OR%, 24.2 DR%, 18.8 SB%
Art Parakhouski: 15.6 OR%, 23.6 DR%, 6.0 SB%
Keith Benson: 11.3 OR%, 26.0 DR%, 9.9 SB%
Dexter Pittman: 16.4 OR%, 15.7 DR%, 8.9 SB%
Greg Monroe: 8.7 OR%, 25.2 DR%, 4.9 SB%
As you can see now, Alabi is better blocker than Pittman actually, Davis doesn't stick out of the pack Cousins is an excellent offensive rebounder and Orton is atrocious rebounder.
Keep in mind that Udoh spent about third and Favors - about half of his time at PF which means further from the opportunities.
As notable mention, Kenneth Faried pulled outrageous 36.7(that's the best for 7 years Pomeroy compiles his statistics) DR% and 16.2 OR% (he had 20.1% as a freshman). Pedestrian 8.1 SB% and not really physically strong so comparisons to Ben Wallace are not totally warranted but if you thought Brockman was a monster on the boards wait till you see this guy. Just for fun Brock's numbers were 15.6 DR% and 25.7 OR%. Brockman played in much better conference though.

Thanks for the numbers. Gives a better prespective, and makes sense that Alabi should be better than Pittman.. I'm a huge fan of Faried's. I'm just not sure what he is, to be honest. He is Ben Wallace-esk. I wouldn't be unhappy if we snagged him in the second round and figured out what he was later.

So if you combine the rebounding and shotblocking Whiteside is the guy. Man, this stuff is so easy...:p

Some people might be shocked to see that according to your calculations Aldrich is the third best rebounder and the third best shot blocker.

Well after having watched him play all year, I'm not surprised. But your right. I don't think most people know how good a defensive player he is. Offensively he leaves a lot to be desired, and for those that have never seen him play, wait until you see him take a jump shot. It has to be one of the ugliest shots in the world. Amazingly he makes quite a few of them. Ditto his freethrow shot. If we draft him I'm sure coachie will throw up the first time he see's him shoot.

Release is terrible, but he shoots it with balance and rhythm. I wouldn't be surprised if with a few mild tweaks he becomes a good mid-range shooter.

I never did get to see Whiteside. Does he have a body build like Davis, where he will forever be skinny, or can his bones support more muscle?

Yeah, I think he can carry more weight. Doesn't mean he will. More than anything he needs to increase his basketball IQ. He has natural instincts when it comes to shotblocking. Very similar in style and body as Varnado. Just taller. I don't think its a prerequisit that you have to be a 270 pound center to be effective. Look at Marcus Camby. You can get to your spot on the floor with Camby. You just have trouble shooting the ball.

I think its fixable. But it'll take more than a couple of mild tweaks. He makes Tyreke's shot look like its textbook. Its amazing to me that he's as accurate as he is. Everytime I see him shoot, I imagine someone in the NBA just taking the ball away from behind.

If we get the number 3 pick and pick Aldrich over Favors, or Cousins I will crap myself, then break my TV. You all thought I was mad last year with Rubio lol..

Looking good for us this year though....

We have a 70% chance at getting either Favors, Cousins, Turner or Wall.. Does that sound freaking unbelievable or not! WOOT!

So who do you all think this years Joe Alexander will be?

Someone who looks good on paper but turns out to be all hype...

I have a feeling it might be Wesley Johnson.. I actually like his game a LOT! But.......... I just cant see him making a big dent in the NBA. I see him settling for jump shots when being guarded by an elite level NBA defender.. Can't see him mixing up his game which might cause him to just disappear during games...

On the other hand I think Patrick Patterson might be the surprise of the draft.. I don't see him as top 2 or 3 in talent, but I can see him building a solid "Brian Grant" type career putting up 13/10 or 12/9 and offering toughness. He is a natural leader as well which will be great down the road on an NBA team.

Your underwear and TV have nothing to worry about. Said scenario wouldnt happen. Its INCONCEIVABLE!

On paper Joe Alexander was a bad pick. Seriously, look at his stats. Poor dribbler and defender who's a solid mid range scorer. Not a great scorer, just a solid one. Why is he a top 10 prospect but Chase Budinger is a 2nd rounder? I never understood the hype at all. Seems like he got overrated due to one dominant performance against Duke.

Wesley Johnson has a much more well rounded game. Good shooter, rebounder and defender. He could be a Richard Jefferson/Josh Howard type 3...the question is, can he be more?

The guys I think of in the top 10 with the most bust potential are Aldrich, Monroe, Davis and Aminu. A lot of which we can probly tell more about when the measurements come. If Ed Davis is 6'9" 215 I'm passing. If Greg Monroe or Cole Aldrich is 6'10" in shoes I'm not as interested.

The IQ deficiency is a killer. No way do you want to draft a project who has a low BB IQ.

Johnson will probably be a good complementary type player. I just don't see the star power though. Maybe he can be a good defensive player (hard to asses though because they played zone) with a solid outside shot, but he just doesn't look to be the type of player that can break teams down off the dribble. It's hard to see him a difference maker.

The hype around Alexander surrounded his great vertical. Problem was, he couldn't do a simple turnaround jumpshot with that vertical in college. He played much smaller in college than his vertical indicated.

If by bust you mean a guy that is drafted high, say top 7 or so, who should have been drafted significantly lower (like the teens), then I agree with most of your list. If they get drafted in the top 7, then yes, those guys could have pretty good bust potential. I'd put Cousins in the group as well, especially if he goes as high as #3.
