Kevin Martin's salary

Hi all, a topic has been coming to mind considering this is Kevin's last year under contract.

How much is Kevin worth? How much will he get? Bill Simmons of espn.com has an interesting theory, saying that everyone in the NBA is overpaid by 20%, which I would have to agree on. There aren't many max players who are truly worth what they're getting paid.

I think Kevin will get an offer from the Kings of 5 years/50 million dollars, or 6 years, 60 million. For a player of Kevin's caliber (marginal star/very good but not franchise player) I would like to pay 7-8 million per year, but again, all players in the NBA are overpaid by 20%.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I guess you need to look at what comparable players are getting, and go up slightly from that due to the ridiculous but inevitable inflation that has been going on in the NBA for some time.

The best comparisons I can think of would be Manu Ginobili and Richard Hamilton. Manu makes 9M, Hamilton closer to 10M. Next year both will be making somewhat more. Of note also is the fact that both these guys are playing for strong teams; players often accept lower pay if they get rings, or at least some boasting rights, as a perk.

I really can't see us getting by paying less than $10M, and $11M-12M wouldn't shock me at all.

On the other hand, Gerald Wallace just signed a FA contract for less than $10M per for 6 years. He's at least as valuable as Kevin, if not more, and playing for a weak team in Charlotte. And it seems that extensions, especially for a player on a rookie contract, tend to be slightly below market value. Locking Martin up for 6 years at $50M might not be unreasonable.

True but the thing that might have driven Wallace's value down is that he is injury prone. When was the last time he played 82 games in a season?

I was hoping Martin would sign for a 5-6 year deal starting at $8 million but after seeing what the likes of Lewis just got, I think anything up to $12 million wouldn't surprise me!

I'd rather we try and sign Kevin to an extension this summer. We could see us losing him, if we wait till next year.

Considering the likelihood that Martin will continue to develop and improve, I'd almost be willing to bet Petrie is already working on an extension.
