Centers Thomas, Haywood Reportedly in Recent Fight

ORLANDO, Nov. 6 -- Washington Wizards centers Etan Thomas and Brendan Haywood were involved in a physical altercation last Thursday in which the two traded punches at Verizon Center, according to two team sources.

One source, who requested anonymity because the team was trying to keep the incident private, said Thomas was angry over comments made by Haywood's agent, Andy Miller, on Oct. 30.

Miller was critical of Coach Eddie Jordan's decision to select Thomas as the starting center over Haywood, believing Jordan chose Thomas out of personal animosity toward Haywood rather than performance. "My concern is that this is based on personal issues rather than professional ones," Miller said the day of the decision.

Thomas felt that Miller's comments were a slight toward him, he approached Haywood and threw the first punch once the argument escalated, a source said. According to the source, Haywood responded to the punch by body-slamming Thomas to the ground, tearing out at least two of Thomas's dreadlocks in the process. The two players were separated by teammates and the altercation ended.

Thomas and Haywood declined to comment Monday night after losing to the Magic. Neither player was suspended and it was unclear whether any fines were assessed. Both players were in uniform for Monday night's game at Orlando.

Haywood was suspended for one game after he and Thomas got into a fight during practice last season.

Thomas was named the starter prior to last Wednesday's regular season opener at Cleveland following a heated competition between the two players that began in training camp and continued throughout the eight-game preseason, during which they rotated starts.

Haywood had been the primary starter during his five seasons with the Wizards and was not pleased by the demotion though he publicly said he was prepared to "be a professional and play as hard as I always do."

It's clear, however, that Haywood thinks of himself as a starter and is not happy coming off the bench. Miller stopped short of demanding a trade for his client but he did say "the current situation is not good for Brendan or for the team."

Thomas impressed Jordan during the first two regular season games and was a powerful presence again Monday, finishing with 14 points, 15 rebounds and a career high 6 blocks. Jordan indicated after practice Sunday that he will stick with Thomas as the starter.

"He's a force, he is active down there and he earned his spot for just those reasons," Jordan said. "He shows a lot of passion, he tries his best to defend the rim and I like him in a starting position."

Kings send:
Kenny Thomas

Kings get:
Michael Ruffin
Brendan Haywood

Wiz send:
Haywood
Ruffin

Wiz get:
Kenny Thomas

Get a starting center until Brad comes back and gets healthy. Getting healthy could take over 2 months, if you figure he comes back in 4-6 weeks.

Wiz get another rebounder and they get the Haywood/Etan combo broken up.

Our rotation after:

Bibby/Salmons/Price
Martin/Salmons/Garcia
Artest/Corliss/Garcia
Reef/Mo/Corliss
Haywood/Reef

Injured/reserve: Miller

Washington's rotation:

Arenas/Daniels
Butler/Daniels
Jamison/Hayes
Kenny/Jamison
E. Thomas/Songaila/whoever

sound good to you guys? Then if we end up trading Brad/and/or Reef for a better PF who blocks shots and stuff, we still have a starting center. This deal makes too much sense not to happen, don't you guys agree?

makes me feel alot better about the altercation between kenny and reef, at least those two didnt fight...

I'd like it. K9 has some o.k. games for us, but he is still a guy that needs to start and is a 6' 7" PF in the West, with a big contract and not the best attitudes.

Hayward and Ethan Thomas really went at it. Hayward pulled out 2 of Ethan's dreadlocks and Ethan punched Hayward to start it. Stuff like that doesn't get ironed out quickly, easily, or completely.

If not Hayward I'd like a Thomas for Thomas trade. Then Hayward would be like, heah Thomas I have a beef with you, Kenny would turn around and Hayward would be like you shrunk Thomas, I can really take you now! :p

heres the story as espn has it. i posted it as a separate thread because i didnt see this, but mods, please delete the other one.

if petries still as crafty as his reputation dictates, then he should be able to pull off something out of this. hopefully its through kt (although i do give him props for his active energy last night)

And Etan Thomas is shooting 25% on his FTs this year, so we would still have our comic relief.

I don't think there's much chance they'd trade him, though, now that he's starting.

id do either for kenny thomas in a flash. if the allegations are true (about jordan giving thomas the nod because he had personal issues against haywood) then im assuming its haywood thats gonna get teh boot. but kenny thomas is at 6.8? million this season, and haywood is owed like 5. to make it work, theyd have to give up some more, and i wouldnt give up a young 7 footer and some garbage money for kenny thomas...

I wonder how many posts around fan sites there are around the league there are as a result of this story? Either way I thought about the idea myself and I think it is a legitimate thought. Haywood adds the size we lack and would allow us to start SAR and keep the rebounding/hustle that Thomas provided on the court. Decent idea, and could really help our bench when Miller comes back. I hope its at least a topic of discussion in the front office.

I would of course do it instantly, but it should be noted that Haywood in a lot of ways is beginning to look like a 7'0" 260lb version of KT -- lot of attitude, selfishness, and delusions about his role in the NBA. Even though he's really a PF, I've always preferred Etan's hustle and heart approach -- fiery and can inspire teammates. Haywood...well, he's big. But there's always been something missing. Big, has post game, can block shots...should be better than he is. Should have more impact. He's on the roster and yet his teams have always been lousy defensive squads.

But like I say, I still do it. There is always a place and a use for a big 7'0" center with post skills and shotblocking ability in the way that there is not for a 6'7" midget PF. And he is the style of player we absolutely need to plug some holes and deal with some major matchup problems. Think it would have to be for KT though (as opposed to enders or whatnot) -- not at all sure I'd want both those selfish personalities in one frontcourt. And so we'd probably not get any better on the glass -- Haywood is solid, but not dominant.

so brick, would you put haywood @ starting pf?

Haywood?

He's no PF. Pure center. Another reason why Etan would be niftier (but I am assuming is off the market now as their starter). Etan can play 4/5. But Haywood is a pure center. So it would be he and SAR as starters. Then when Brad gets back...that would be interesting. I don't think Brad and Haywood could really play next to each other because that would be achingly slow. And so you might have the sad sack all softie Brad/SAR starting combo again, and then Haywood off the bench, but only as a C, and then Mo or Corliss off the bench as a PF. But in that type scenario Haywood is not happy wiht his 15-18min, and its not really enoguh time for him to give us major presence. So dunno.

P.S. reviewing my earlier post I think I know where that came from -- I worded it funny, but I was saying that ETAN is really a PF, not Haywood, who is obviously a center. Etan is kind of a Skinner-like combo 4/5.

yeah sorry i read it over again and its pretty clear, i just muddled it all together. i get what youre saying about etan first, but with him starting, hed be the one to keep in the event of a trade.

i think that if we got haywood, hed get played more often than the 15 minz. as it is, mo isnt getting minutes at all, so im not really counting on mo as a backup. the way musselman has been playing all his starters, i wouldnt be surprised to see miller and haywood together, with miller shifting over as a pf. i just dont see musselman playing mo any reserve minutes, and after him, there really isnt anyone, unless he decides to use artest some more.

Kenny for Etan Thomas, yes.

Kenny for Haywood? Haywood is the type of pure center who was more valuable five years ago than he is now. He is the type of guy you would throw up against Shaq and Robinson and the other long-gone pure centers. But he's very limited -- he's not good on offense and he can't slide over to power forward. The way the NBA is now, a solid if not great power forward is more valuable than a so-so center.

I don't think it makes the Kings better. It doesn't make sense to give up Kenny Thomas, who will play 30 minutes a night, for Haywood, who at best would play 10-15 mintues a night backing up Brad. Basically it would make Mo Taylor our backup power forward and thrust him into a major role. Haywood doesn't even offer salary relief: he's signed through 2010.

I can't see giving up a rotation player for a center (even Kenny) unless that center can slide over to PF (like Etan Thomas and Gadzuric).

Why would the Wizards do that? They have no need of Kenny Thomas. I think Haywood for Corliss, Haywood for Potapenko+Hart or Haywood for Potapenko+Garcia are unlikely, but of course more probable than Kenny for Haywood.

Don't forget they gave Songaila a contract (over-paid, IMO) this off-season, and he'll be out half the season if not longer, with a back injury. They talked about using him at the 5 while small balling.

I would take Haywood or Etan in an instant, but it might come down to what happens with Darius. I don't see them wanting both Darius and Kenny, so we might have to take Darius on. He's not ideal, but I wouldn’t object.

^ that is still a problem. 7mil for KT and around 5 for Haywood. We will have to give up another guy and get their garbage for the deal to balance out.

Rather have Etan but I think that deal would have to be considered. The one thing I would regret not having is that quickness advantage Kenny brings.

Yeah but I would think Wizards would rather keep their C starter, which happens to be Etan, if they have to pick one.
