Keep or Trade the Pick?

For the sake of this thread, we're going to assume the pick stays at #8. So what do you do? Do you trade it or take a rookie?

My answer is that it depends on who is available. If the first 7 selections are Simmons, Ingram, Bender, J. Brown, Dunn, Hield, & J. Murray, I would trade the pick. If one of those 7 drop to us, I'd likely hold on and take whoever is available.

If None of the 7 Players Drop to Us...

Jazz Get:
Marco Belinelli & #8
Jazz Give: Alec Burks & Jeff Withey

Celtics Get: Ben McLemore & Kosta Koufos
Celtics Give: Jonas Jerebko & #23

Kings Get: Alec Burks, Jonas Jerebko, Jeff Withey, & #23
Kings Give: Ben McLemore, Kosta Koufos, Marco Belinelli, & #8

At #23, I'd be looking at D. Murray, B. Johnson, Maker, Stone, Zimmerman, & Ulis. I'm not sure D. Murray will still be available, so I'd probably select B. Johnson or Maker with the pick.

We'll have $28 mil in cap space at this time. I'd go after one of the top SG FAs (Bazemore, Crabbe, Fournier, or Lee), Curry, Acy, & a 3rd PG.

PG - Collison/Curry/3rd PG
SG - Crabbe/Burks/Anderson
SF - Gay/Casspi/Butler
PF - Cauley-Stein/Jerebko/B. Johnson/Acy
C - Cousins/Withey

If One of the Wings Drop to Us (J. Brown, Hield, or J. Murray)...

Celtics Get: Ben McLemore & Kosta Koufos
Celtics Give: Jonas Jerebko & #23

Kings Get: Jonas Jerebko & #23
Kings Give: Ben McLemore & Kosta Koufos

At #8, we take either J. Bown, Hield, or J. Murray (whichever one drops in this scenario).

At #23, I'd be looking at D. Murray, B. Johnson, Maker, Stone, Zimmerman, & Ulis. I'm not sure D. Murray will still be available, so I'd probably select B. Johnson or Maker with the pick.

We'll have $30 mil in cap space at this time. I'd go after one of the top SG FAs (Bazemore, Crabbe, Fournier, or Lee), Curry, Aldrich, & a 3rd PG.

PG - Collison/Curry/3rd PG
SG - Crabbe/Hield/Belinelli/Anderson
SF - Gay/Casspi/Butler
PF - Cauley-Stein/Jerebko/B. Johnson
C - Cousins/Aldrich

If Dunn Drops to Us...
Celtics Get: Ben McLemore & Kosta Koufos
Celtics Give: Jonas Jerebko & #23

Kings Get: Alec Burks, Jonas Jerebko, Jeff Withey, & #23
Kings Give: Ben McLemore, Kosta Koufos, Marco Belinelli, & #8

At #8, we take Dunn (whichever one drops in this scenario).

At #23, I'd be looking at B. Johnson, Maker, Stone, & Zimmerman. I'd probably select B. Johnson or Maker with the pick.

We'll have $30 mil in cap space at this time. I'd go after Beal or one of the other top SG FAs (Bazemore, Crabbe, Fournier, or Lee), Acy, Aldrich, & a 3rd PG.

PG - Collison/Dunn/3rd PG
SG - Crabbe/Belinelli/Anderson
SF - Gay/Casspi/Butler
PF - Cauley-Stein/Jerebko/B. Johnson/Acy
C - Cousins/Aldrich

Personally, I think the best case scenario would be if Dunn dropped to us. The team I put together in that scenario is very, very balanced while all the young players play different positions and should compliment each other well going forward (Dunn, Crabbe, Cauley-Stein, Cousins). A starting lineup of Collison/Crabbe/Gay/Cauley-Stein/Cousins would be solid while the bench would be strong as well (Dunn/Belinelli/Casspi/Jerebko/Aldrich).

PG - Collison (32 min)/Dunn (16 min)/3rd PG
SG - Crabbe (28 min)/Belinelli (16 min)/Dunn (4 min)/Anderson
SF - Gay (34 min)/Casspi (14 min)/Butler
PF - Cauley-Stein (18 min)/Jerebko (18 min)/Casspi (12 min)/B. Johnson/Acy
C - Cousins (36 min)/Cauley-Stein (12 min)/Aldrich

Cousins - 36 min
Gay - 34 min
Collison - 32 min
Cauley-Stein - 30 min
Crabbe - 28 min
Casspi - 26 min
Dunn - 20 min
Jerebko - 18 min
Belinelli - 16 min

Once Dunn proves he can contribute at a high level, he can cut into Belinelli's minutes. Once Johnson proves he can contribute at a high level, he can cut into Jerebko's minutes (or since Jerebko will be an expiring, it gives Johnson a season to get acclimated).

Next season, you have Dunn, Crabbe, Belinelli, Gay, Cauley-Stein, B. Johnson, Acy, Cousins, & Aldrich under contract. At this time, you can either move forward w/ Dunn as the starting guard and target guys like Collison, G. Hill, P. Mills, T. Evans, or McCollum to come off the bench. Or you can have Dunn come off the bench as a PG/SG (since he has the size to guard SGs) and go after a starting PG (Westbrook, Lowry, Holiday, Teague, Rose, or Schroder). Then you look at signing a bench wing who can play both SG & SF (Iguodala, Sefolosha, T. Allen, Korver, CJ. Miles, McDaniels, Bullock) with the expectation that Cauley-Stein, B. Johnson, Cousins, & Aldrich can handle all of the minutes at PF & C.
