I'm not seeing why, really. Afflalo is a fine player but he's not signing a deal with us to back up Ben McLemore when he could get a starting gig somewhere else. And it would be stupid for us to burn yet more resources to block McLemore, who has eerily similar numbers to Afflalo over the last 10 games, is 7 years younger, and is already under team control. Afflalo has a player option for next season so he could walk at the end of this season if he wants to.

Back up Ben McLemore? Oh christ, no.
We would obviously acquire him to be a starter. McLemore is coming off of the bench if he ends up here. No doubt about it.
Not too sure about that.
Afflalo: 14.5 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.9 apg, .337 3P%, .428 FG%
McLemore: 11.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.5 apg, .362 3P%, .444FG%
Similar numbers but Ben is more athletic and shoots a better percentage.
Affalo will likely walk.
He turns 30 this year, and all ready appears to be on a decline.
So let's say we traded for him, then he signs a 3 year deal.
We would probably get one decent season from him next year....
Then I'm thinking Landry contract 2.0....over paid guy on the decline, because it will take a premium to keep him in Sacramento.
Stay away.
Afflalo is a Karl guy. There's a healthy chance he stays for that reason alone. Drafted and developed under Karl for 5 years.
There is a knee issue that somebody in our front office has to be taking a look at, but otherwise hsi rise last year, fall this year, etc., its all just variance. Fact is that if the knee is all right we KNOW he can be a productive player in Karl's system. Well... I should say what I'm hoping is Karl's old system.
In any case, we don't need to score a star there. A 10-12ppg vet who returns to his normal 40% 3pt shooting ways would be more than enough. Steady. You give me 20min of steady Afflalo per game in place of 20min of Nik and DWill, I would absolutely guarantee you we are several points better at least. We need more quality vet guys to give us those steady minutes. Cousins will win games. We just need to stack up a bunch of guys who won't lose them right back.

You have a point if the contract is fair, I do not expect it to be.
It's his final big opportunity, I expect it be at least 7 million per. I'd rather target someone cheaper and younger.
But we will see, I think we will truly have to out bid everyone else by a decent margin.
Nik may develop nicely but come on...I wouldn't mind attaining Afflalo but not at the cost of Nik...otherwise I don't see how a deal can get done.
With the cap set to increase by some $30m, the $7M contract does not become large at all.You have a point if the contract is fair, I do not expect it to be.

Per CBS:
Though it puzzles some rival execs why the Kings would trade the eighth pick in the 2014 draft for a veteran with a player option, Nik Stauskas is the carrot the Kings are dangling in deals they're seeking to upgrade the roster for new coach George Karl.
Per CBS:
The Kings are deeply committed to making a roster upgrade at the deadline, in their incessant quest to placate DeMarcus Cousins, league sources say. Chief among their targets is Denver's Arron Afflalo, whose services would require the surrendering of a significant asset. Yes, because it's batpoopoo crazy. But that seems to be the way we do things around here, so....

Undervaluing prospects and overvaluing veterans has become something of a cottage industry around here, so I can't say I'm surprised. But just for poopoos and giggles, maybe take a look at the first 4 years of Afflalo's NBA career and compare them to Ben's. You might also want to note that Afflalo played 3 years in college and entered the NBA at age 22 while McLemore played 1 year in college and entered the NBA at age 20. McLemore is probably the better player before his rookie contract is up, but that doesn't matter right? It's all about these next 8 weeks where we need to make a concerted push to throw away every long-term asset we have. Oh yeah and let's blame it all on "keeping Cousins happy" while we're at it. Seems to be going well so far.
Its the way all teams do it when they are moving into winning mode. The only thing adding confusion is that we have not, in fact, been winning. But man, we should have been. We are literally YEARS behind schedule already. So you make moves based on the age and readiness of your star. Throw in a 60-something mega coach with a history of health issues and a 28yr old #2 weapon...we are absolutely a win now team that just hasn't been winning now.
Witht eh expected salary cap jump, that's a pretty good per year figure for a 24 mpg vet.
Assuming you don't go crazy and stack up 35yr olds to do it, becoming a winning team again with whatever roster you create is by far the greatest long term asset you could have. Handy when talking to guys about extensions and in the free agent market too. You might even get treated like an adult franchise again.
If we were somehow going to "fake it", then that would be one thing. But George Karl and DeMarcus Cousins, with help from Rudy Gay and some quality vets SHOULD be able to win games. Should be a good team.
Yeah but we can't afford to lose a mega-prospect like Nik Stauskas.
