JT and Spencer

I'm not so sure either will make the squads to be honest... Just has to do with the team they play on, the record we have, and lack of real minutes they got earlier on in season and now... I'd be surprised if either made it - but both deserve it

I'm not sure if JT will make it--he definitely was a startling surprise at the beginning of the season given his poor preseason returns, and he did turn a few heads--like David Thorpe's, for instance--but now, while he's a good rookie player, he's relatively pedestrian--he's learning, but the surprise factor has already gone away. Also, he's been Natt-ized--his minutes have been sporadic at times, and it's hard to develop a rhythm when your coach hates playing the young to begin with; and of course, our horrible record; all those factors make it really difficult for Jason to even make it.

Hawes--it's almost the same way as for sophomores--nice early burst showing three point consistency and shotblocking skills early on, but he's sort of faded now, takes a lot more jumpshots when he actually has a solid postgame, and has really become very streaky in general. PER's a good measuring stick--Hawes has largely stayed the same here as last year, although there's obviously potential to improve on it. I don't think it's his year either.

Spencer was a lock until his own franchise scuttled him to showhorn in more of those precious Mikki Moore/Brad Miller minutes.

JT is on the bubble. Peaking at the right time, but I think they only take 8 guys right? Or is it 10? And this year's rookie depth is ridiculous:

Mayo 19.1pts 4.1reb 2.9ast
Rose 17.5pts 3.7reb 6.1ast
Westbrook 14.5pts 4.3reb 4.9ast
Gordon 13.7pts 2.7reb 2.2ast
Beasely 13.6pts 5.3reb 0.9ast
Augustin 12.1pts 1.8reb 4.1ast
Lopez 11.3pts 8.0rteb 0.7ast
Gasol 11.1pts 7.2reb 1.5ast
Fernandez 10.8pts 3.1reb 1.9ast
Thompson 9.9pts 6.8reb 1.0ast
Chalmers 9.5 2.6reb 4.5ast
Love 8.8pts 8.4reb 1.2ast
Oden 8.4pts 7.0reb 0.7ast

Do you guys think the will make it to the Rook vs Soph game?

I've been thinking about this. The squads are only 9 players each. For rookies, I think there's a glut of good players that may squeeze Thompson out:

PG: Rose, Westbrook
SG: Mayo, Gordon
SF: Beasley
PF: Love
C: Oden, B. Lopez

That's 8 guys that it's hard to argue against. The last spot is probably up for grabs between Thompson, Gasol, Augustin, Fernandez, Mbah A Moute and Chalmers - and not a true SF among them. Augustin likely loses out due to his injury and Chalmers due to the guard glut. I don't know if the roster is picked with respect to position, but with all the guards and big men, I can see Fernandez or Mbah A Moute getting the nod over Thompson/Gasol so the squad isn't too unbalanced when Beasley's not on the floor. I'd like to see Thompson there, but unless his recent numbers as a starter sway anybody I'd bet on Fernandez.

Sophomores are a bit harder to peg down. I think these six are solid:
PG: Stuckey
SG: Durant
SF: Thornton, T. Young
PF: Green
C: Horford (assuming he's healthy)

Leaving 3 slots to fill between Conley, Yi, Noah, Hawes, W. Chandler, Sessions, maybe Landry or Brooks. Frankly I think Sessions should get the nod over Conley, and with Green kind of a tweener, a couple of bigs would be good - Yi and Hawes would be my choice. Yi's hurt, though, and I like Chandler over Noah (position aside), so I'd go with Sessions, Hawes, and Chandler.

JT should made it. Spencer although he was a lock for it in the beginning of the season then slowed down significantly so don't know... I surely hope they both can make it though

Good write up, but does Love necessarily get the nod? I'd think Fernandez would be an easier pick, then it comes down to Thompson, Love and Gasol for the 9th spot. Unfortunately, I think Jason's turned it on a little too late to win that one.

Well, over the last month Love has been averaging 11.1 points and 9.9 boards compared to Thompson's 11.4 and 7.2. Gasol is at 12.2 and 8.5, which is better than I imagined. But I figure Love will make the cut for name recognition alone. I can see Conley missing out despite name recognition because we've basically been waiting for him to perform from day one. But with Gasol, Love, and Thompson pretty close, I think "star power" will make the difference. But looking at Gasol's stats, I think Thompson's best chance to beat him is simply that the rookie team wouldn't need a third center behind Oden (star power again) and Lopez.

And I should mention that while I personally believe Hawes belongs on the soph team, his low minutes lately are quite likely to shoot him down, even with the soph team's limited front line. Noah may be more likely to actually get the nod, and unless Horford doesn't get healthy Hawes may be on the outside looking in. But if Horford is still hurt (along with Yi, who will be out) I can't imagine Hawes or Noah missing out.

I think they both have a decent shot at making it on as reserves, but even if they do get on it's going to be a game run by the guards. The guards are going to zoom up and down the court gunning and setting eachother up, so I'm not sure they'd even get a chance to shine if they're in the game!

don't you guys wish we can have a rookie or a soph player where we can start up a thread to see if he's going to make the all star game. That'll be the day!
