Wizards will let Jeffries go
Posted: Saturday August 5, 2006 3:12PM; Updated: Saturday August 5, 2006 3:52PM
The Washington Wizards will not match the New York Knicks five-year, $30 million offer sheet extended to restricted free agent forward Jared Jeffries last week, a league source told SI.com. Jeffries will become property of the Knicks on Monday.

The 6-foot-11 Jeffries averaged 6.1 points per game in 77 games (all starts) with Washington and was considered one of the top remaining free agents on the market.

Last week Knicks president Isiah Thomas -- who shares the same Indiana alma mater as Jeffries -- signed Jeffries to a frontloaded contract that included a lump payment of $6 million when he signs as well as a trade kicker.

The writing appeared to be on the wall for Jeffries when the Wizards agreed to terms earlier Saturday on a one-year deal (plus a second with a player option) with free agent forward DeShawn Stevenson, a less expensive alternative who averaged 11.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in 82 starts with Orlando last season.

A lot of money for Jefferies...

But the Knicks are definitely gathering some defensive/hustle/versatile role players to compliment and mix with the offensive players.

Balkman/Collins, who both have showed good play and performed well in the summer league. Which seemingly should translate over to the NBA... I liked Collins in college, and didn't know much about Balkman, was surprised at the pick like most everyone else, but I've come to dig Balkman.

Jefferies is similar to Balkman only taller. Can guard and play mutiple positions effectively, athletic, effective without the ball, and can handle the ball.

Money aside, I like it for the Knicks.

didn't we need a big man....?

Jeffries really isn't a big despite that impressive height. He's avery intriguing 6'11" "small". A 6'11" Sf who swings to OG. He can swing up to PF because of his size/versatility and you might have seen him playing there, but that's really not his position.

This may be, get this, a GOOD signing by the Knicks! Hope Satan owns some thermals.

(also btw takes any luster there might have been off the Stevensen signing for Washington -- not an addition after all, but just a much smaller replacement).

Jefferies isn't a big man, mass-wise. He's lanky, not an inside presence. He's a unique player, but his main position is at SF/SG. I described him pretty well in my above post.

We couldn't of got him regardless.

edit: Brick beat me to it. But, that's two views for ya, KMart23.

The thing i don't get is why do you go over you're luxury tax as if it hasn't been over it already? Jefferies is not the savior this signing is Jerome James all over again...

Well, in value wise? Similar, yeah. Neither should be getting 30 million. But, indeed, James alone was never going to play like he did in those 4 games against us.

Jefferies is a completely different player in skills and conditioning.

Jefferies is SO overrated it's not even funny hes not that good he's a solid defender but he still gets exposed how does this signing exactly help the Knicks?

It helps them by what he brings - position versatility on both sides of the ball, length, athleticism, hustle, size, ballhandling. For what he brings with that, does that deserve 30 million? No. Aside from the money, it's a nice addition for the Knicks. Along with having Balkman/Collins on the team, for what I said in my first post about them. Then there's David Lee (team-player and energy big) and Nate Robinson (aside from scoring, he hustles and plays tenacious, sound defense).

All five compliment a team with mostly offensive-minded players.

brick,

thanks for shedding some light on him. i didn't realize he wasn't a post player. haven't really seen much of him play. i'm glad we didn't get into a bidding war to get him :D

Jefferies is a good fit for a team whos good already. they basically expect Jefferies to save the Knicks if you go look at the Knicks board some are happy and some are pissed off. some are happy because they think Jefferies is saving the Knicks and some are pissed off because they know it's a waste of $$$ yet again.

there so far over the cap everything they spend is already too much.

Who do you think gets the blame for that? they have been collecting Big Fat contracts since the Layden days and beyond.

They should unload contracts before signing another player with a big contract...

The Knicks are a mess and no matter what thats what there gonna be for a few years until they REALLY overhaul that roster and the crappy Knicks management.

They have the worst GM
They have the worst Owner
and they have the worst decision making in the NBA thats how bad they are.

Jefferies fits in with the Knicks because they need defense and team-player guys to compliment most of the offensive-minded players on the team - Francis/Marbury/Curry/Taylor/Crawford/Jalen Rose. Frye I'm not sure you can say anything about yet, he has a good jumper, but doesn't really stand-out elsewhere yet. Had that injury in late Feb. as well. Jefferies, like Lee/M. Rose (who I forgot to mention)/Nate are, and Balkman/Collins will be, is a glue guy. Bringing versatility and athleticism to a team along with the team-play.

Also with Brown gone and the rookies from last year gaining experience and the rookies this year - the young players will get more time.

I'm not saying the Knicks jump up a level, but they'll be better than last year because they'll have a better mix of players, young players developing, getting more time, and a more controlled rotation. They were very, very far from either of those last season.

I disagree here, they have a Owner willing to go over the cap and pay the Tax just to make the team bettter. The only other owner crazy enough to do this is Cuban. The diffence between the mavs and kincks is that the Mavs have a GM that picks out players that fit the team unlike the NY GM that does not now what the hell he is doing, lol.

Tell me you're joking..... cause the Knicks Owner is probably the worst in the LEAGUE... Remember owners approve the decisions the GM's make so basically what Isiah Thomas does is what the Knicks Owner does.

infact hes stupid for even trusting Isiah as a coach.

no way, people here are out for dolan's head. he doesn't spend to make the team better, he spends cuz he doesn't care, and because isiah's an idiot.

It's been reported had the Wizards matched, Isiah had a plan B and that was to aquire Darius Miles from Portland. How crazy would that team be with D. Miles. I'm dissapointed now that we won't get to see that.
