Several sources are saying Jason Kidd is going to be named the next head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.

The Nets and Jason Kidd have agreed on contract details to make him the franchise's head coach, league sources say.

Sports Center had an interesting tidbit on Twitter:

DID YOU KNOW: Jason Kidd played in 1,391 career games which will be the most EVER for an NBA head coach.

This could be really smart or really stupid. Especiallly when Brian Shaw was the #2 candidate.

Shaw has been repeatedly passed up for HC jobs over the last few years. Must be a bad interviewer or something.

eternally bad timing, i think. jason kidd has career ties to the nets, so while i find it to be a strange hire, it makes some kind of sense why they'd pass over brian shaw in favor of kidd...

and shaw would likely be the head coach of the lakers right now if jerry buss still had run of the organization before he passed. jim buss made the decision to cut all previous ties to phil jackson, first passing over shaw in favor of mike brown, then passing over both phil jackson and brian shaw in favor of mike d'antoni...

it also happens to be an incredibly deep pool of head coaching candidates this offseason, so while shaw has a shot at the clippers' head coaching vacancy, so does lionel hollins, and i imagine george karl is receiving consideration from clippers brass, as well...

has this ever happened, where a player retires and is hired as a head coach in the same offseason?

Mike Dunleavy, but he was in quasi-retirement and already an assistant at the time. still played 7 games in 89-90, before becoming a headcoach in 90-91.
