Its time Maloof's...Fire Petrie! (merged)

LOL!

This is actually hilarious. The kid was projected by almost every sports writer, etc. to go in the top half of the first round of the draft. He's not a loser.

And you have no idea what he's capable of doing yet.

We weren't going to get Greg Oden or Kevin Durant or even Yi Jianlian. No matter what F/C we got, it wasn't going to be an automatic starter for us so why not let him actually step foot in Sacramento before you act as though you have better information than virtually every pro analyst working in the NBA today?

WE HAD A CHANCE AT JULIAN WRIGHT. The same Julian Wright who was projected to go 3rd or 4th for the majority of the season. He would've given us plenty of things we need. He could play PF OR SF, he has athleticism, he has long arms, he can pass, he can REBOUND THE BALL, and he can do basically anything. Instead we drafted this clown... excuse me if I feel like Petrie is a huge idiot right now.

VF21 - voice of reason, everyone.

I agree with her - we must wait and see what he is capable of. I'm disappointed as much as next guy, but I will reserve my judgement of Petrie for now. Too earlier to tell.

Hey, enjoy your anger all you like. I just think it's humorous. Sorry...

And I still object pretty strongly to calling Hawes or Petrie or anyone else names.

I'm OK with Hawes, because he's the best center available. I'm OK.

But the problem is...

I think Petri will make some trades involving picks, but it didn't happen yet. I wish Jason Smith who just was picked by Heat at #20 via Artest trade. But you know... no trades yet.

No trades yet. That really hurts me. We need another picks.

Julian Wright fell because he got abused in workouts by Thorton, Young, and Brewer. SF with average handles and a poor jump shot don't do well in the NBA. Outside of Kirilenko, who is a better defender and midrange shooter, there are very few great perimeter players who don't have at least a consistent midrange game and handles. He can get out on the break and rebound the ball but come on we didn't pass on a superstar. Al Thorton and Young will be much better players then Wright. We got need and a quality big i think Petrie made the easy but correct pick here.

I'll give the kid a chance, and I guess I don't feel as horrified as everyone else seems to be.

But since we're demanding that people be fired. I vote for the Maloofs first.

:)

Regardless of whether you continue to genuflect at Geoff's feet, or can smell the rank fecal odor emanating from his office these days, it is hard to argue that he is just too damn passive on draft day. Always has been. Sits quietly in his place, takes his medicine. Goes home. Portland is fortuitous they no longer have him -- they could never have accomplished their mega-draft das scheming last year that has helped build them their huge buzz. He would have sat on their one pick and maybe drafted Shelden Williams because he was steady and dependable.

Change for the sake of change isn't always a good thing...it may be a VERY good thing we're not seeing any movement - the offers he's getting could very well suck royally. You and I can't judge that. It takes 2 to tango.

There was a few more players I would have selected wwwwwaaaaayyyyy before Hawes. I would have selected Al Thornton or Acie Law or even Julian Wright. I think Al Thornton is the "sleeper" pick of the draft. It pisses me off that we pick a Brad Miller Jr. Sure, he has an offensive type game, but damn what about DEFENSIVELY. Sorry, but 6.4 rebounds just don't impress me for a 7'1 center. But hey, remember the saying "In Petrie We Trust". NOT!

So damn true. I truly hope Petrie has something up his sleeve though, since he can't be THAT dumb. I'm hoping for some major move in the next few days, because this ain't gonna cut it.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't have anything up his sleeve. If he did we would've heard about it just like you hear about everyone else making trades.

Give the kid a chance. News10 (in a news teaser) just said Hawes just might be the best kept secret in basketball.

And could we just curtail the personal insults of Geoff Petrie? It's real easy to sit at home and act as though some of us could have done better but the truth is, NONE of us are NBA general managers.

I was disappointed that we weren't able to grab Noah, but considering who was left when we drafted and our desperation for someone/anyone over 7 feet tall, I think Petrie made the logical choice.

It's being widely reported the Kings have been actively trying to pursue some trades. Let's be honest, though. It's gonna be tough to do too much magic with the pieces we have and still get anything even approximating value in return.

This wasn't a totally bizarre choice and it's not like it wasn't widely predicted on a majority of mock drafts.

Petrie picked the same player the vast number of sports analysts would have picked for us in the same situation. So why is it dumb?

The only deals you're hearing about are the ones that have actually been accomplished.

No offense, but how many sports analyst do you agree with?

In a mock draft situation, I think I agree with quite a few of them, especially when you're the position we were in. In this case, although I was rooting for us to get Noah, I think Petrie made the logical choice. I'm at least willing to give the kid a chance.

Me agreeing with a particular sports analyst - or all of them - isn't the point. My reponse was based on the fact some of these people are acting like this was totally out of the blue, that no one else would have picked Hawes, etc. and that's simply not the case.

Right, Hawes was on the Kings radar early on and was considered a top 15 pick by most "experts" or "analysts." I think what most folks are saying (trying to say?) is that Hawes represents everything the Kings DON'T need at center. That's why there's so much disappointment. All that building excitement in the draft, all that hope vanished in mere seconds. Logical choice or not, there's a need to vent tonight.

I'm not disappointed. True, he was not my first pick, but anyone that I would have picked before him was alreay taken. We can't choose who is left when we pick. He was the best choice left for us. He may not be what we need at center, but honestly, there was nobody left that could fill the spot any better. All in all, it was a decent pick. It is my hope that he proves the naysayers wrong. I do not know enough about this kid to proclaim him a failure. He is now a Sacramento King and I welcome him. I hope he has a great career here.

Like I said, there's a need to vent. Most of us will be much better tomorrow. ;)

The Hawes pick was bad enough, but the fact that the Kings were involved in ZERO deals today is even worse. The Kings have another two weeks or so to swing a deal before the league goes into that three month dead period before training camp. The Blazers made like four different deals while Petrie was napping. Pathetic.

What makes me mad is not picking hawes. It is about watching other teams making moves to get the players they want. We are always stuck with best player left.

Geoff Petrie - The Most Overrated GM In The League

OK, so just a few years ago, we were a team that ultimately should have won a championship... hands down, one of the best teams in the league, with good players that had good trade value... So why when Petrie went trade happy a couple of seasons ago do we not have anything to show for it?!... No picks, no players, no money to spend, NOTHING! So all we are stuck with now for the next 3 years is a bunch of huge contracts for players that are hardly deserving of them. Honestly, i think the success of the Webber era had way more to do with Rick Adelman then it had to do with Geoff Petrie...

Note: I merged in that last thread as something similar, although I realize it could have taken a more philosophic/analytical bent.

i sure hope petrie proves us ALL wrong with this pick, just like he proved us all wrong when he drafted peja! =] let's get optimistic guys... this is our pick, we can't do too much about it now! remember.."In Petrie We Trust!"

If Brad Miller had not been so pathetic last season, and if he had not disgusted half of the Kings fans in the World, and if Marty McNeil had not just written that scathing article on Brad Miller, our average Kings fans would not be so upset with the Hawes selection.

I am afraid that poor young Spencer Hawes has become the latest victim of the dreaded "Miller Factor". If Kings fans were not prone to projectile vomiting from having watched Brad all year, Hawes would have seemed a very reasonable draft choice. Lets all suck it up and give the kid a break. This is all Miller's fault.

I have ansolutely nothing against Hawes. From what I've seen he's a great offensive weapon and a great post play. Is he a good player? You bet. Does he address the Kings' issues in any way? Nope. We needed someone to defend the paint (since none of our big men can, except Justin Williams), and Hawes has no defensive skills. We needed a shotblocker, and Hawes doesn't provide that either. So what do we have next year? Another year of lay-up drills in our paint? You are very right though, a team manager probably knows better what he's doing, but from a fan standpoint, many of us don't see any positives from this pick. Plus, Theus wants a run 'n gun team, and Hawes probably won't be useful at it either, since he's big and slow. But I'm sure Petrie knows what he's doing. Do you, VF, think he's gonna pull something out of his hat before next season starts?
This is the thing that people do not realise! There was only 1, maybe 2 players in the draft that would address the need for interior defence and rebounding. Surprise, surprise, those two players were selected at 1 and 3.

What we did was pick someone with an eye on the long term future. Not next season. Who ever we picked at 10 today wasn't going to be a MAJOR contributor next season. We picked a player with a view of what our team will be in 2-4 years time. We had a SG position solved. We might have a SF position covered but the rest was all pretty much up in the air. We needed to get a big guy and we did. He was the best big guy available at 10. We took him.

According to Petrie we talked to every team in front of us other than the top 3 picks about us moving up. Today, Petrie spoke to Charlotte to move to pick 8. He even had an offer from team below us wanting to trade up to our pick to select Hawes.

Point is, we shoudln't be judging this pick as whether or not it addresses our current needs, but whether its a young piece to put in the bank for the future.

Sure he has some weaknesses to his game which is pretty much expected with anyone you pick at 10.

Right now we have some young pieces going forward. Forget Miller, SAR, Thomas, Artest, Bibby et al... those guys are not part of the LONG TERM FUTURE which clearly Hawes is. Whether he is going to be an All-Star C in his prime or whether he is going to be a nice starter at that position is debatable. Big guys just don't grow on trees. Especially not skilled 7'1", 19 year old big guys.

He averaged almost 2 bpg in 28mpg. That could translate into the NBA but he is not as useless as some people here make him out to be. This pick is about what he can do for us in the long term future, not next season or the season after.
