Isaiah Thomas Road to the NBA

Why does everyone apologize when they post something? Who gives a s***! if it was already posted, who cares. Not everyone reads every damn post and thread on a forum.

As you probably know by now, I was recently drafted by the Sacramento Kings. This is a blessing beyond measure, as it has been a lifelong dream of mine to play on the NBA level. I definitely feel like I am still being slept on, but that is nothing new – I’ve always dealt with being doubted. I am very thankful to the Sacramento Kings for giving me a chance to prove that I belong. A chance is all I have ever asked for and I cannot wait until this lockout is over so I can get up to Sacramento and get my career started with my teammates in my new hometown.

June 23rd, a.k.a. Draft Day, was probably one of the longest and most stressful, yet joyous, days of my life! We had a draft-watch dinner/party at my apartment with my family and very close friends, but I was far too nervous to watch the draft with them. So, I left the house with my big bro ‘Zo (Alonzo Weatherby) and went up to the University of Washington to get some shots up. A few of my former Husky teammates were there (Darnell Gant, Scott Suggs, Desmond Simmons, Abdul Gaddy and Terrence Ross), which lightened the mood even more.

As time went on, and more and more names were being called ahead of mine, I started wondering what was going on. It appeared that teams were still scared off by my height. I never lost faith, but after all the work I put in throughout the Draft process, I did begin to ask, “How are some of these guys being picked ahead of me?” and “What do they see in them that they don’t see in me?”

As the second round wore on, I decided to head back to my apartment to watch the last part of the draft with my family and friends. As soon as I was about to get in the elevator to head down to join everyone, my agent called and told me that the Sacramento Kings were going to take me at No. 60. That’s when I was finally able to breathe!

We got into the elevator, went down to where my family and friends were gathered – all of whom still had no clue where, when, or even if I was going to be picked *– and as soon as we got to the entryway, ‘Zo screamed, “He’s going to SACRAMENTO!!!” From then on, the celebration was in full force.

Immediately after my name was called, I received a call from Coach Paul Westphal welcoming me to the organization and then another call, moments later, from the Maloof Brothers doing the same. They all told me how excited they were to have me, surprised that I fell so far and that they couldn’t wait to get me up to Sacramento. I flew down the next day with my mother and father to be officially welcomed to the team.

The organization had everything laid out to introduce the rookies – Jimmer Fredette, Tyler Honeycutt and myself – to the city and its fans in a big way! There was a fan rally at the airport when we arrived, press conference later in the day and an even bigger rally at the mall. It was an unbelievable experience and definitely a weekend that I will never forget. Now, I can’t wait to get back out there and start playing in front of those same fans.

I strongly feel like I am living proof that if you work hard, are dedicated, and have faith, you can achieve your dreams.

Until next time…

No one wants to be redundit. I've apologized myself when I'm not sure. Why a criticize someone thats simply trying to be polite. We need more of that on this fourm, not less.

Good find on the article. It seems the Kings drafted pretty well at their spots.

I didn't post a lot about Thomas during the season, except when I covered a game by Washington and another team that had players I was interested in, like when Washington played Kentucky. However I did like Thomas. I just thought that there wasn't anyway he would end up on the Kings from where they were picking. It never even entered my mind that he would slide all the way down to the 60th pick. Where he was a steal by the way. For those that don't know, he's not related to the other more famous Thomas that played for the Pistons.

He played for one of my favorite college coaches in Lorenzo Romar. He's been compared by many to Nate Robinson, who ironicly played for Washington as well. They seem to like the little guys there. Since Petrie has tried to aquire Robinson on a few occasions, its no surprise that he would draft Thomas. Thomas has a flamboyant personality, and he was definitely the leader of the Washington team. I was very pleased to see he measured out at just over 5'10" in shoes, instead of the listed 5'9". He's a very good athlete who I believe posted a 40" vertical at the combine. But he does have some warts.

His outside shot is very inconsistent. However, he improved his shot every year, so I think if he continues to work hard, which he always does, and makes better shot selections, his average will go up. He's very good at penetrating and dishing. But one of his problems, is when he guarded by someone taller and just as quick as he is, he really struggled. In his matchup with Kentucky, Brandon Knight gave him fits, as did Lamb when he guarded him. Now that didn't happen much in college, but it will in the NBA, so he really needs to improve that part of his game. He's just not going to have that quickness advantage he's used to having.

But hey, I'll be his biggest fan. I think he's a great addition to the team, and he has more upside than Jeter. No offense to Jeter, who I liked in summer league last year. I have to give credit to Uncia03, whose a great judge of talent, on that one.

People apologize cause they fear the forum police are gonna come out of the woodworks and set them straight. That's all I'm trying to say.

Paranoid much? Having a thread closed because there is another one open on the same topic is hardly a big deal. It's not a slap on the wrist, it's not a demerit, it's just housekeeping.

I can't speak about the motivations of other people, but I apologize out of respect for who ever posts it first, and because we don't need two threads on the same subject. In most cases, if there's enough traffic on both, then a mod will combine them. Hardly a violation. Only people living on the edge fear the police.
