You cannot build a team by bringing in kids each year. It's going to take a veteran presence with leadership to solidify the team. Of course the Kings are lacking in that department so we should get rid of the veterans, but we aren't going to build a team drafting kids and hoping they turn into a leader. It's pretty hard to become a leader when the team you play for is in such disarray. Nobody would want to lead this group of clowns.

To further reduce the field, only four to have won rings as coaches. Not likely were getting any of them.

many players in the league create dumb fouls. any other conclusion is idiotic. it happens every game. how many times has cisco racked up 3 fouls in his first 8 minutes? my argument (which you cannot comprehend) states that "against a diciplned defense or in a game that matters" kevin martin would not get to the line more than twice. you're just like some of the others, continuing to use the freethrow card. and ive said over and over that getting bumped on the way to the basket is not a skill.

Kevin hasn't played against the Celtics during the current "big three" era, but let's assume that the San Antonio Spurs represent a "disciplined defense". In 2006-2007 Kevin averaged 7.1 FTA per game, in four games against the Spurs he averaged 7.25. In 2007-2008 Kevin averaged 10.1 FTA per game, in three games against the Spurs he averaged 9.3. Small sample size, but it sure doesn't look like the disciplined defense of the San Antonio Spurs had any effect on Kevin's free throw attempts.

I'm curious Gary. Who is the veteran presence on the Portland team? How many years in the league defines you as a veteran? Is Martin a veteran? If you use the draft to rebuild for five years in a row, is the the first draft pick five years later a veteran?

Here's a simple statement for everyone. Every superstar in this league, was drafted by someone. They didn't just magicaly appear for teams to droll over come freeagency time. Some were sure things from the get go, or at least were thought to be. Duncan, Shaq, Lebron, etc. Others were thought to be good players and turned out to be superstars, or close to it. Wade, Paul, Nash, etc.

So its possible to get lucky and draft a superstar. Most people knew that Kobe was going to be good. But I don't think anyone could predict he would become possibly the best player in the NBA. The draft is where a rebuild begins and is the best way to build a foundation for the future. The higher the pick the less lucky you need to be. However, I'll take all the luck we can get.

Now, I will say that a the begining of the season I thought it was a misake to trade Miller. With what has transpired today, if Petrie can get a young guy, expiring and draft pick then he should do it similar to the artest deal. The rumor for Wallace is a huge mistake. If there is a trade for salmons or moore that makes sense and you get value back then thats ok. Otherwise we are better off playing out their contracts. Don't forget Salmons has an option for the last year, his salary can be coming off in 2010 too. If he does opt out they are looking to have around $30 mil in cap space in 2010. Thats enough for 2 top FA.

You hope to get Griffin or a PG in the draft that pans out to be a player. I don't see anyone in this class except maybe Rubio who can be an upper level player. Beno needs a pretty big turn around to even be considered a backup at this point. We may need to draft 2 PG's if Brown doesn't look like one too.

Assuming nothing happens trade wise which is the only reality we can go on, you make a the offers to FA's in 2010. And to really help entice a FA they will need to have a very improved year so they can be the missing piece.

You also work the phones this summer to those FA's for a trade and contract extension before they become FA's. If the team doesn't think they will resign you may be able to snatch one early.

And all of this really doesn't make a difference if the right coach isn't in place to put it all together. Which to me means there are 2 front runners. Eddie Jordan and Elston Turner. If Petrie is going to continue with the same type players then you need a coach that uses them to their strengths.

I think you fail to realize having that much cap space is awesome... if you weren't Sacramento. No big star wants to come to Sacramento, if that was the case, we'd sign LeBron. So I think the draft IS important. Why would they come here if they could go somewhere like New York?

I dont think it's right to acknowledge this as him being the 'Sacramento Kings' coach...obviously it was the Rochester Royals...almost 58 years ago...nothing remotely close to being a title for Sacramento...but who's to argue with semantics. lol

Oh, and not to pine about the recent past, but it's going to take us getting 2 things for us to be winners again: a Vlade Divac type of player, and a Chris Webber type of player...everyone we have on our roster right now are just pawns, even Kevin...like I've been saying all along, check back in a year and a half after 2009-2010 season when we have money to sign a player of moderate or major influence.

edit: oh, and btw...money talks in the NBA(and all sports for that matter), and if you have alot of it to spend, someone will want it, no matter where they play...

as bad as this team is the only joke is our current roster... its horrible... this is where change for the sake of change doesnt look that bad. with the webber and peja trades we were still a pretty good team. but now we have nothing to lose...

But this contract assumes that Beno is our answer at point guard, which he probably isn't. He is just a cheaper alternative to an aging Bibby. To me flexible pieces are players who aren't under long-term contracts that can still contribute. If Beno regresses or the Kings draft a point guard, how easy will he be to move if he still has numerous years left on his contract.
