If we were to extend Garcia right now to a MLE sized deal, he would become a Poison Pill Provision contract. This will make him very difficult to trade, as his current salary would count as an outgoing for us, but his incoming salary to another team would be the average of this year and all the years of his extension, so if we extended him to 5 years at the MLE it would mean his contract would count as about 6 million incoming to any team that was to trade for him.
As it stands now, we are in a position to be able to put together a nice package in a trade during the season and up to the deadline. We have 2 first round picks, Bobby's expiring and Mikki's partially gauranteed deal next year as well as Brad's large contract who will be an expiring next year. Youth, exprings, and picks have been the formula the last few years in order to aquire a star/superstar type player, and of our youth, Garcia is probably the most expendable of our young guys who will actually have value to another team. However, as a PPP contract, using Garcia as any kind of sweetner in a deal would become substantially more difficult, and even if it could be worked out, would result in us having to take back more salary, and with our eyes still focused on the 2010 offseason, there's a chance that something like that could muck up a deal that otherwise would bring some real talent back.
I would much rather keep our options open this season, with so much change going on right now in the organization there's no reason to have our hands tied at all for a projected 6th man/borderline starter. If at the end of the season it turns out that Garcia has improved significantly and is exactly what we are looking for long term, he's still a RFA so there is little chance of actually losing him. I just think that this organization should be focused on aquiring a star/superstar player in order to get back into contention, and there's no reason at all to hurt our chances at someone like that because it might help get a rolepayer on a better contract.
