interesting piece from donte

Sorry but I disagree with this... Salmons is a pretty decent defender, but he can't guard the elite players like Artest can.

I am not sure that Artest could last year either, which is probably what fuels his opinion. Although, in Salmons case it is a question of talent and physique and with Artest his effort was spotty and he was banged up. I think it will be interesting to see what Artest the Rockets get this year on D.

In two of the games last year Artest was getting burned by Kobe. Salmons came in and did a much better job. Salmons is a very good defender, and against the smaller quicker players, he's better than Artest. Artest is considered a better all around defender because of his ability to guard players from the two to the five. I agree that last year wasn't one of his best, but even not his best is still better than most.

For whatever it's worth, David Thorpe said in his ESPN chat today that he figures Greene would have been a top five pick next year if he'd waited. Of course, I'm pretty sure that the same gets said about more than five guys every year. ;)

It really depends on the elite players you are talking about. Salmons likes to get up on his man, and is very good at keeping his man in front of him (work hard for a shot).
Artest likes to get physical and intimidate his man. But he also used his great hands and long arms to go for steals. This often leads to his man going right by him when he misses the ball. I guess what I am saying is that Artest gambles a lot more, which lets his man get to the basket more.
