Interesting find on a ride.. Union School Cemetery (aka Center Tomb Cemetery)...

Gary

All-Star
This Cemetery is Located out in the middle of the grapevines near Calvine Rd. and Grantline Rd. I found the name of the cemetery by googling a couple of the names on the tombstones. Supposedly Union School used to be located out there, and that school gave way to Pleasant Grove School in the late 1800s.

I was out riding my mountain bike when I stumbled on this a while back. So I decided to take my camera out there for some photos. Some of these people were original Settlers to CA! Some were born in the late 1700s. It's interesting to say the least what you can find if you ride out in the middle of nowhere.

If anyone wants the larger higher def photos let me know. I had to cut these down a bit in size. Plus I have a LOT more.. That monument has 4 sides, and it looks like all 4 sides were put to use. Also got a pic of what looks to be an old flagpole from the school, and an old chimney from that Union shool as well.. Some of the foundation is still out there.

That is one of the links I found re: this cemetery... Kind of neat :) Someoen needs to go out there and try to preserve it or at least gate it. Maybe do a little research on the people that were buried out there or something.

Contact the local Boy Scout troop - they are always looking for Eagle Scout projects. Twin brothers of a good friend of mine did just such a project at a small cemetary outside Galt for their (joint) Eagle Scout projects.

Nice! Thanks for sharing, Gary!! We had an old cemetery up here that an Eagle Scout cleaned up for his project so I second Warhawk's idea.

You might also want to contact the Sacramento County Historical Society. This place should be preserved - hopefully before freaking vandals get to it and destroy it completely.

Actually, looks like vandals have already been at work. Thus the broken headstones.

The thing would be to clean it up and keep it cleaned up. Great pics Gary! I find cemetaries fascinating places actually. I read the names and dates and familes and I always wonder about all those lives and the times tbey lived through. Some short, some long.

I'm just glad it doesn't look like the Marysville Cemetery looked a couple of years ago. They've worked so hard to restore it - and from what I understand vandals are STILL going in and destroying things for no reason whatsoever. Makes me want to hurl.

If you're ever up here in my neck of the woods, I'll have to show you a couple of the really old cemeteries we have.
