Im the new guy

Hi every1, I've been reading you guys for about a year now and only just plucked up the courage 2 post.

Im from England (i dont think im the only 1 around here) and started watching the nba about a year ago so I dont have a great knowledge of the game yet unfortunately. We dont get any coverage over here so you guys have been my main source of information/opinion. I could bore you with stuff like why I chose 2 b a supporter of the Kings but I dont want 2 ramble in my 1st post :). If you do have questions about me tho id b happy 2 answer.

Ok i thought id fire a few quick opinions at you i have so that you can get 2 know me a bit better.

1. Reading through your posts i get the feeling that there is a common opinion that Donte Greene wont/shouldnt b resigned. I dont know why, maybe its something i'm missing, but this past season iv been impressed with Donte when hes played and couldnt understand why he didnt get more of a chance? If we could resign him 2 a real cheap contract wouldnt it b worth it seen as he's still quite young and could develop in2 a decent roleplayer?

2. Tanking? Is it actually done by coaches or players because i've never heard fans hope 4 a loss until I started following basketball. I know less wins=higher draft position but i just cant understand how you can support a team yet want them 2 lose?

3. Im trying 2 keep up to date with all the stadium/relocation stuff but am finding it hard 2 figure out where were at with it? Obviously i hope the team stays in Sacramento. From all the stuff i've read and seen the fans of this team are pretty awesome!

Lastly i just like 2 thank every1 who posts here as i said this is my first stop when it comes 2 Sacramento/nba news and you guys have a great site with really interesting opinons so keep up the good work!

Welcome to an informative if emotional Kings board

First your 3 points

- Donte Greene is in his 4th year and has never lived up to his abilities, which we see ever so often in games. He is still where he was in his first 2 years. He is the teams joker which unfortunately carries over to his game, i.e., he doesn't seem to take his role seriously nor provide the effort on a consistent basis.

- Tanking-it, as the saying goes, is an expression from the the emotional lower end supposed fans looking for instant gratification. The whole reason for the lottery is to make tanking it awaste of time. As an example, in years past, teams in the 6-8 slots based on record have made it to the 1-3 draft slots based on the lottery drawing. And the Kings had the worst record one year, were slotted to draft #1 but lost the lottery and drafted 4th I think. You can follow the lottery selection process in real-time via the internet probably on ESPN next week on May 30. It starts at 7pm New York time.

- lAhhhhhh, the arena deal. Long story. The majority owners (52%) of the Kings are the Maloof Family: Gavin and Joe Maloof who live in Sacramento and were beloved by the community ever since they became majority owners back in I think, 1996-97. The other family members are George and Phil, who owned and managed The Palms Casino in Las Vegas along with 2 40-story condo buildings one with a Playboy Club, Adriana the sister whose claim to fame is being on the TV show "Beverly Hills Housewives" and Georgia, the Mom of the bunch.

They and the GM (general manager) Geoff Petrie, took the team from 12 years of losing to the conference finals against the Kings main nemisis, the Los Angeles Lakers in 2002, losing to them in7 games. Two years later their superstar, Chris Webber, tore up his knee and then gradually the other stars left and they have been going down hill ever since. They have had some really great draft choices the past 3 years and things for the team are finally on the upswing. Ten years ago the Maloofs first brought up the need for a new arena in the not too distant future as the arena at that time was already 17 years old.

Sacramento is the state capitol and has no significant corporate headquarters other than one regional supermarket chain and Blue Diamond growers of Almond nut fame, calling Sacramento home. It is a government town. Pro sport teams need local corporate backing. Until the big financial crash beginning in the USA in 2007, the Maloofs were very wealthy. But their other investments in Las Vegas went south, they bankrupted the two 40-story condos they owned and had to give up 98% of their ownership in the Palms Casino & Hotel to get out from under the mess in Las Vegas.

Their remaining property was the Kings, Arco Arena (now Power Balance arena), and the land the now 27 year old arena sits on. But remember they have only 52% of it all. They owe the city $68M for a loan some years back plus loans made for them by the NBA.

Joe and Gavin worked the new downtown arena effort for a bunch of years. The new mayor of Sacramento is an ex-NBA allstar point guard from Sacto, Kevin Johnson, who worked magic to get a deal worked out for a new downtown Entertainment and Sports Complex including apparent approval by the Maloofs. When the Kings (Maloofs) would not step up to be part or majority owners of the new venture, the first wiffs of their money problems began to leak out earlier this year. Then George Maloof, GM of the Palms Casino, suddenly became the voice of the Maloofs in Sacramento and had some disagreements with Gavin and Joe that became public. Then they appeared to become the key "tenants" of the new venture. But at the last minute, George on behalf of the Maloofs, backed out of the whole deal in late April this year. A week ago they said maybe they will upgrade the 27 year old arena because they own that! Whoopie crap!

So there we are. Other inputs and any corrections are welcome.

My wife and I had season tickets from 1989 to 1998 when we moved out of the area and I've been using KingsFans.com ever since. We live down near San Diego

I suspect Greene was used wrong last season as well as a ploy to lowball him this off-season possibly same with Reke. Anyways welcome.

Hi, new guy from England. Are you one of those people who enjoys suffering? Why pick the Kings to follow unless it's because the of the brilliant conversations you find on this forum? :)

I would just add that they (The Maloofs), through a series of dog and pony shows, set up for media, have set up situations doomed to failure in an effort to set up a power play for an eventual move to Anahem Ca. Whether that happens or not remains to be seen. The maloofs have made many serious blunders that we as a community hope will return to haunt them when they try their power play.

There are more of us here that think Donte was not put in a place to succeed much like JT wasn't then post about it. Sometimes it just isn't worth voicing opinions that aren't popular or have already been discussed nonstop

A lot of us around here think we need a star at every position and when they don't perform they get jerked around and badmouthed. Last year we had Donte told he was going to play PF so he came in heavy and then he was chewed out for being heavy and he started losing weight then when he would make 1 mistake he was jerked to the end of the bench for weeks before he would see playing time again when someone else met the ire of Westphal. This year was a bit different he was played mostly at the 4 when we did play him because Smart wanted to run small ball and again he wasn't put in a place to succeed.

all in all we will probably let him go and he will flourish elsewhere in a limited wing defensive position with a system that works a team together and we will have another example of poor coaching costing us in the long run.

Edit
Oh and welcome. :P

Thanks for the kind welcome its appreciated. I guess with the Donte thing its just that he seems like a pretty good guy 2 b around so i assumed he would be good for the locker room. Considering everything i thought he might be worth a small contract. Saying that i did just read a thread started by bajaden on the Personnel Moves forum about the the true possibilities of the offseason and it made me realise why we might not have room 4 Donte.

To reply to your question i actually have a bit of reasoning behind choosing to support the Kings. I watched a few NBA games and decided that if i wanted 2 properly start following another sport (im a big soccer fan) then i should pick a specific team 2 root for. Now ive come over 2 your side of the pond on a couple of occasions for vacation. First time it was just to florida. Second it was a sort of road trip around California and Arizona. Basically i wanted to support a team from a city that i'd visited and i didnt just want to be another glory hunting Laker fan. Therefore Sacramento was my 1st choice and inevitably coming on this board got me hooked.

That beats my reason. I was basically kinda clueless about the NBA as a kid, and a friend of mine said that the Kings were pretty good (back then I only knew Michael Jordan, and that was around 2001 or 2002 I think). I started choosing the Kings in my NBA live game on playstation, and later on started following the team more when the internet got more popular/bigger. Been a fan ever since. Haven't met anyone else from my country that is a Kings fan.

I'll give you credit for good timing in starting with the Kings. They have argueably the best young center in the league in Cousins, a very exciting little rookie point guard backed up by the college Player of the Year in Ferdette, a possible All-Star guard in Evans if he learns a mid-range jump shot, a very good power forward in Thompson and a great outside shooting guard in Thornton. They don't yet have a Small Forward who is an excellent outside shooter. That was supposed to be Donte Greene but 4 years on the team (under 4 different coaches I might add) and he is still on-the-bubble as we say in the USA for players who may or may not make it.

The past few years the Kings have had no reserves (called bench players in the NBA) who could play well enough as a group to help the team win games. There are two promising young players on the bench who have great potential, Honeycutt a rookie small forward and Whiteside, a 7 ft 1 in center who blocks shots. If they develop it will be big help.

But the Kings have big money players who are not main pieces to the puzzle and who have not contributed as expected: Salmons @ $8M, Garcia @ $6M and Hayes @ $6M. Hayes is good but a small center. Garcia is the longest term King and great bench leader. Salmons is hard to figure. Good guy but.........

Going to Kings.com will get you to the team roster and various stats and where you can sign up for the Kings Insider newsletter. Go to "hoopshype.com/salaries/kings to see what each player makes now and in coming years. If you plan a vacation on this side of the pond this summer, gat to Las Vegas during the NBA summer league 13-22 July. For about $20 a day you can watch 5 games a day of the rookies, free agents and younger team players of some 18 NBA teams.

Have fun and welcome.

I was just curious as most people like to follow winners. So in a way this feels like home, huh? - stretching the concept a bit. :)

Yes, Donte is the odd man out. It has been a source of mystery why he has never been given a stretch of let's say 10 games of steady play to either prove himself or not. But this has been a several year saga with Donte and I think a lot of people believe there is something about his attitude that shows in practice that turns off the coaches. The humor (humour?) in this is that the coaches he has been playing for have been incompetent. I think he will have a long career bouncing around from team to team and perhaps that's the limitation of his ambition. After all, whether he produces or not, he becomes a multi-millionaire and will never have to work again in his life. That's the beauty of being a professional player.

I think shot selection an decision making has something to do with it. Donte shot over 50% from 2pt range and only 24% from 3pt range. However, he only took 60 more shots from 2pt range (160 to 105). At some point he needs to recognize what his strengths and weaknesses are and make adjustments. Now that may be due to a lack of coaching or just being immature. Maybe a change of scenery will be what he needs (it has certainly helped many other players in the past).

Welcome aboard!

We've had Kings fans from the UK before but I believe your the first one who picked us because of our beautiful city. :) Hopefully, there will again come a time when you're a Kings fan because of the great play, camaraderie and spirit that radiates from the team and the fans.

:)
