Ideal Depth Chart by Season's End

When players play and how many minutes they play is going to be a function of how Karl thinks they will match up against the opposition. OK, maybe he'll start the same guys each night because it's politically correct, but I think he's going to have a quick hook to get the matchups he likes, and the 4th quarter is going to be all about matchups. Sometimes, he'll play Cousins and Koufas at the same time (like against Gobert and Favors), sometimes he'll have WCS in there at the 4, 5, and maybe the 3, sometimes Collison, sometimes Rondo, sometimes McLemore, etc., it will all depend. The interesting angle for me is what players he will play against whom? What matchup will he feel comfortable with in putting WCS on the floor? Will it be mostly against a stretch 4 type, maybe a 3 without a lot of mobility? Will he possibly play Koufas when it's more of a conventional back-to-the basket 4? When will he play the passing Rondo over Collison who is a better outside shooter? When will he play both at the same time? It will probably be a good 20 games into the season before we can discern how exactly Karl is going to matchup against the opposition.

I think we start the season with:

PF DMC / Moreland
SF Gay / Casspi/ butler
C: koufos / WCS
Sg McClemore / Belillini / Anderson
Pg rondo / collison

Main reason is Karl doesn't like starting rookies, by all star break, WCS will take over as starting PF.

End of year depth chart:

PF WCS/ Moreland
Sf Gay / casspi / butler
C DMC / koufos
Sg McClemore / bellilini / Anderson
Pg rondo / collison

I think you make some good points. I wouldn't be surprised to see Karl use WCS to guard Durant at a critical time in that game in order to get a stop. Calapari used him that exact way at Kentucky. Let WCS play the other teams best player one on one, and let the chips fall where they may. Of course with WCS being a rookie, and Durant being a superstar, I would expect WCS to foul out in short order. Hopefully not, but you know how rookies get treated.

Yep. I think eventually they hope that WCS can slow down a Durant, but like you say, it ain't going to be in his rookie year. I think the perfect guy for WCS to go up against in practice is Gay. Gay loves to post up guys; it's probably the strength of his game. Seems to me that WCS should be able to prevent Gay from doing that, and then it comes down to Gay playing to his secondary game of driving and shooting some 3s against WCS. I would still expect Gay to handle the rookie, but after a month of practice WCS should learn something. Also, it might be good for Gay to be forced to brush up on his non-post up game.
