How do you judge a player?

Homer Fan Since 1985
We get so many threads posted by certain players' big fans. Sometimes, they are so onesided, or blind to that player's faults that it got me wondering how we all judge whether a player is good, bad, or mediocre.

Is it where they went to school or what country they are from? Do we judge them on NBA readiness or potential? Is it based on how big their contract is? Do we make allowances if they are just a 1st or 2nd year player? Or, do we judge everyone by the best player to ever play the position, in which case no one can ever measure up?

So, if you will, try and explain how you judge a player's value?

p.s. This thread is meant to be general in nature. It is in no way aimed at any player/players or their fans. :D

trade peja for artest...... lol....

but i base it on what they are capable of doing compared to what they are actually doing on the court..... miller, reef and peja should be rebounding the ball better than they are.... miller and peja shouldnt be affraid of playing in the post.... these little things arent impossible.... i dont expect peja to dunk on someone like shaq or duncan... but he shouldnt be tossing up sissy little layups against 6'6 defenders..... it the little things that they dont do that i judge them on....

martin and garcia shouldnt be asked to carry the burden of leading the benches scoring... thomas and skinner should be getting at least 10 pts each a game.... and rebounding the ball..... martin and garcia should be getting nothing but easy looks.... not being asked to get us back into the game when we are down....

How do I judge a player? It depends on the player.

I judge players by what I see a play do and what they can do. Doug Christy was a disapointment to me because he could have been a much better offensive player. He showed his potential every now and then but was always scared to shoot the ball.

Brad Miller does the most amazing things considering that he is slow, can't jump and isn't very strong. He is also disappointing because he doesn't build up his muscles nor does he go the other route of losing weight and getting faster. His off seasons are spent hunting, fishing and doing 12 oz curls.

Players that play the best that they can, and give it their all, on and off the court, are the ones that I respect the most. I like players that can be depended on when the game is on the line. Players that do what they are asked to do and don't complain really stand out in my mind. Bonzi, Shareef, and Corliss come to mind when I think of this kind of player that has my highest respect.

disagree. these guys were scorers in college and that is what they were brought here to do, score. someone has to score from the bench and from what i see, these are the guys to do it. i just think they need more confidence and that will come with time.

they way i judge a player is by their willingness to win and do whatever it takes to get the win. basically, i judge by heart.

By effort and eagerness. Will to win. Ability to shrug off mistakes, sac up, and put your mind to the next play. Fearlessness.

That's why I love Peja so much, in spite of not having the most natural talent he makes up for it with..... oh wait a minute..... never mind.

Okay.

I'll admit it.

I went for the fake.

I judge players by commitment, desire, TEAMWORK, consistency, heart, effort and work ethic. Not necessarily in any particular order. A cute smile doesn't hurt, either.

the thing is, they arent lebron james, wade, gordon and whatnot...... they werent ready to take over a nba game...... not even if its only 15 minutes.... we needed a veteran scorer coming off the bench with them.... wesley person or bobby would have been great to have playing with them to take the pressure off of them.... if they still suck in 2 years, then yeah.... but right now they are not ready to carry the scoring burden.....

money, name, ability to score 100pts in the 1st 1/4,(that would be nice) to me don't mean anything without the right additude, the ability to do whatever it takes to win as a team, and the commitment to give 110% EVERY NIGHT.

I disagree with that. Just because they were scorers in colege doesn't mean they will be scorers in the NBA. It is a whole different thing. They are still young and will find their rythem and touch someday and try to score.

But that isn't what they were brought to do. They were brought here to give some athletism, heart, energy, and a spark off the bench for now since they are still elarning. WE really do not have any scorers on the bench right now but maybe in teh future Special K and Cisco will be bright shooters.

I am going to try to break the question into two: How do you rate (judge) a player and why do you like/dislike the player:

1. I make up my mind about liking/disliking a player, based on my own values and of course influenced by my own sensibilities - but you can call it biases. I can like I a player for no more then the fact that we share something - like common background. I can really like a player if I think he is high-character, take for example Doug Christie - weirdness abounds with this guy, with his relationship with Jackie and what not. But this is the guy who publicly admitted to cacking his pants in a most important game of his life and came back from it as a _leader_. I have to respect that. Then, there are guys like Steve Smith. Not a superstar, but a good pro. Spent most of his money (of which he earned a lot in the NBA) on helping others who are underpriviledged and who do not have the talent to make it in the NBA. I just like that. And he did it quietly, on the side, no big deal to him.

I don't necessarily like a player because he is of same ethnicity and/or same cultural background like me, but invariably I would like them to do well. That is why I absolutely love Vlade, I like Pedja and I detest smug little $**** like Radmanovic and Jaric. Nothign wrong with that.

2. I rate/judge players the same way that Bricklayer grades them: relative to their talent level and expectations. I cannot work myself up angry about Cisco or Kevin having a bad game. I don't expect them to come out there and take over. I can wait on them to mature into their roles. On the other hand it infuriates me when talented, veteran players underperform. Luckily, there is not a single player on the Kings who is consistently, game in and game out, mailing it in. It's just that we lost Webb, Vlade, DC and Bobby and we haven't replaced them with equal talent yet. You can froth at your mouth as much as you like about Pedja, Bibby and Brad, but they are doing the same thing that they always were, it is just that now it is not quite as valuable as it was before. Now they are not adding to a great core, now they ARE the core. End of the story for me. You can cheer Pedja, Bibby, Brad or Reef as much as you like - or bag on them - the simple fact remains that they are neither as great as some people would like you believe nor as bad as others would want you to think. Now, Bonzi fans may be onto something. Bonzi may prove to be a renessance man. ;)

B-Jax is quite a longshot, but Wesley Person is still available.

Agreed.

Who said they were LeBron or Wade type players? And BTW Ben Gordon doesn't belong in the same sentence as LeBron and Wade. Nobody is asking them to be superstars, just a solid spark off the bench. It isn't too much to ask from these 2 players to average 8-10 points a game. By no means does anyone ask them or expect them to take over a game, just play consistent and be a spark.

theres a lot of factors.

playmakers, basketball IQ, sweet passes, clutch shots, etc, heart, determination, attitude, things like that. being hot also helps :D ( i'm so bad i know, but i do go for the basketball skills FIRST i sweat ;) )

and of course, being a king ;)
