Henry Turner

I don't mean for this thread to be a bash-Henry Turner thread, but I have to say that, IMHO, I can't believe the Kings have brought him back this year!

Last year it was hard to watch Henry on the air - because he speaks way too fast - like he's on speed! Basically he needs to speak more slowly and a little more clearly. But even if he could improve his mechanics (and no one seems to be helping him with that), he's still not going to be the articulate NBA pro that they need for that on-air position.

I like that Henry's got some NBA experience, but I really don't see any improvement from last year, and I think the Kings could have (and should have) done better. At the very least, can't they hire some retired guy to coach him?

Sorry, but I enjoy Henry Turner. He has a good perspective from a players point of view. What happened to Kara Lawson. And who is this new woman. I do not like her at all.

I like Hank Turner better than Tank Thompson who he replaced - but maybe that's not saying much. Tank just mumbled most of the time in a very deep monotone voice. Henry can talk a bit too fast and gets his syntax and grammar all messed up from time-to-time with stuff like, "he do good" (sic), etc. Obviously, neither one is a polished TV basketball analyst by a long stretch.

The idea is to give the show a feeling of cohesion, of tradition, etc. by having former Kings players working with Koz. With that in mind, I have no problem watching Henry, and I didn't really mind Tank, either. Of course, I'd love to see Vlade doing the show, but he's way too big-time for us.

;)

Who is Katye? Henry and Tank are both horrible on there and Krista and Kara are ok. Kara is too big time for us now with all her ESPN gigs for the NBA and Women's College ball she does.

Koz: So Henry, do you see the Kings weak rebounding being a problem in this game?

Henry: Yes, I see the Kings weak rebounding as being a problem in this game.

Koz: Do you agree that Kevin Martin is a key player and needs to adjust to defenses that key on him?

Henry: Yes, Kevin is a key player and needs to adjust to defenses that key on him.

Koz: Thanks for that great insight, Henry!

Me at home: [screaming and tearing my hair out!!]

I was going to use a couple of actual Henry Turner quotes from last night's game, but decided that would be blatant bashing and VF would probably close the thread. He does have the habit you suggest, though, and it's enough to make you pull your hair out at times. On the other hand, Henry's a likable guy and can occasionally articulate some insights that only someone with an NBA background would have. I think the folks who think he's just fine have low expectations.

Dropping Kara was the best thing they have done this year IMO.... she might be able to play basketball, but give her a mic and it's over. I'm really happy to see her gone!

He's a very likable guy.

But in his work as an analyst, it is legitimate to judge his analysis. It makes me want to tear my hair out.

It's not bashing, it's commenting on his ability as an analyst. Which, IMHO, is very weak and I would appreciate having someone more like Kara.

Interesting. I find that she understands the game very well and always offers good (and real and original) insights.

What is it that you don't like about her?

I think her content is great, it's her presense and delivery that is not up to par. It takes a special talent to be good on camera and that is where she is lacking. I often had to turn away when she was talking because she would stare right into the camera for a few minutes straight. lol.....

I thought Kara was really great with Koz. Articulate, knowledgeable and able to communicate basketball. But above all shorter than Koz!!

I think Kara is terrific as well. I don't think it's "staring," I think it's looking people in the eye. It also means she isn't reading a teleprompter or constantly looking at notes.

I liked Kara too. NBA knowledgeable and more polished in front of the camera than the rest of the mediocre bunch. Obviously, ESPN noticed her. I think the best we've ever had in Sac as far as "Kings TV basketball analysts" were probably the late Derrick Dickey and Reggie Theus back in the day - before Jerry Reynolds seemed to grab most of that spotlight. It seems if anybody has any real TV talent in that role they quickly graduate out of Sac. Dickey went on to the Bulls as an analyst and Theus moved on to bigger media things.

I completely disagree! Kara Lawson explained more about what the Kings were doing and what they needed to do during one half time than Tank or Henry have done during their entire time on air. I wish Kara would come back!

Lawson is still competing with Team USA overseas; who says she's been dropped?

I think he was referring to her as an announcer.

But on that front, while I don't get to see the pregames or whatnot, I have to presume that Kara Lawson, now working for ESPN, wasn't dropped. I rather assume she graduated to a higher level because she was too good and got a better offer and left behind all the vaccuous fools to do the local broadcasts.

My understanding is that she hasn't been "dropped" but rather has a contract with ESPN which will keep her busy, not to mention her currently being a member as Slim notes of the women's national team. Christensen's addition was to fill that vacant role. Kara actually reduced her involvement with HPL last season in part due to an increased NBA/college basketball workload with ESPN. Krista Blunk, the Monarchs' color analyst, was in studio last season.

May we all hope to get "dropped" like that....

My point was: how is she supposed to announce if she's out of the country playing for Team USA? The reason why I asked for a cite is because I don't see how you can jump to the conclusion that playing in invitational international tournament = not a member of the Kings' broadcast team anymore? Was she supposed to tell the team, "well, this has been fun, but it's NBA preseason, so I gotta roll?"

She's in Russia right now, playing with the Olympic team; when she's back stateside and still not doing broadcasts, then I'd say there's cause to revisit the question. But, until then, this is a non-story.

:: sighs ::

Except that, right now, she's not doing that, either. It's not like she's moonlighting, commuting between playing basketball and announcing for ESPN, and the Kings just got the short end. She's playing basketball for the Olympic team; she's not doing broadcasts for anybody right now.
