Heat's Mourning tears knee tendon while playing defense vs. Hawks

ATLANTA -- Alonzo Mourning refused to leave what might have been the last game of his career on a stretcher.

After tearing the patellar tendon in his right knee in Miami's game against Atlanta on Wednesday night, the 37-year-old Heat center was placed on the stretcher, but he refused the ride.

Mourning undergoes surgery to repair torn patellar tendon

Mourning had surgery Thursday to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee and a quadriceps tear in the same leg. The injury, which he suffered Wednesday night in Miami's overtime loss at the Atlanta Hawks, will almost certainly keep Mourning sidelined for the remainder of the season.
And since Mourning insists this season is his last, that would mean his career is likely finished as well.

A patellar tendon tear definitely means he's done. A surgery was proposed to me ot make correction to a the top of the tibia where the patellar tendon would be cut. That's the only way they could get to the spot they needed.

The patellar tendon being cut means absolutely NO walking, jumping, running, or weight of any kind on that leg for 6 months. Once the patellar tendon has been cut or torn it runs the risk of completely tearing again after it is repaired.

So, he couldn't even begin to re-hab for 6 months. I asked the doctor if he would have the surgery performed on him and he said absolutely not.

...Alonzo Mourning of the Miami Heat blew out his knee recently in a year that he said that could be his last before he retires. Man, one hates to see a quality veteran player to one's career like that.
