Hawes Apologizes For Missing Summer League

Spencer Hawes has apologized to the Kings for not playing on their summer league team. "The biggest thing was poor communication on my end," the center said on Thursday.
"I definitely could have handled it better. If I (ticked) people off, I apologize. I couldn't be there for the first few days because of another commitment, but I planned on coming after that. Then when it all blew up, I just would have been a distraction. I have to take responsibility for that. But the key is I've spoken with the coaches and Geoff Petrie and we put it behind us."

"I definitely could have handled it better, but I had no idea the Kings wanted me to come playing the VSL; I would be surprised if I could dribble a basketball at all! The best thing I saw in the article was the report that Spencer has added 10 lbs. of muscle. I say, stay home, eat, lift, get big and strong.

No excuses NoBonus. None.

:p

That's the kind of explanation I expect out of Hawes. Kids got a good head on his shoulders...

Hawes is still a kid, but I think he's got a bright future ahead of him if he can learn from his mistakes, just like Michael Phelps. (And I still think there's a remarkable resemblance between the two young men.)

At least he's accepting responsiblity for his actions, unlike some superstar in the news recently. ;)

Perfect political views??

The right answer: Nope !!!!!

Ok guys/gals -- I am leaving this one up just so I can post this message: enough with the political stuff. There is a reason why we banned that stuff from this board. There have already been 4 messages deleted and another edited in this thread, give the mods a break will ya? :p

Ok, I can do it ;)

If Hawes wants to miss the summer league he can go right on ahead as far as im concerned. What im worried about with him is how much time hes spending in the weight room. Theres no excuse for bigmen in the nba to be rail thin.

i hope he gained sum weight or something

You might want to read the article...

...Both the body of work and the body were impressive. Underneath that sweaty T-shirt, Hawes' shoulders appear broader and thicker. He has added approximately 10 pounds to his 242-pound frame without increasing body fat...

"Maybe I'm finally starting to fill out," he said, laughing. "The thing I learned is that you can't force it. You don't want to pack on the wrong kind of weight because that causes you to lose flexibility. But I've been working hard all summer, six days a week, following (strength coach) Daniel Shapiro's program. I wanted to come down and show coach what I've been doing."

If I remember correctly, Hawes weighted in at 12% body fat his rookie season at the predraft camp. Then last year with the help of Skippy and by cutting out all fast foods, he dropped his body fat down and put on some decent muscle.

I believe Brockman. I don't believe he's covering for a friend. And, he says that he was working out very hard. And, Brockman himself has slimmed down from his college weight. Now, based the the Bee story I believe that Spencer will continue to increase his muscle mass, & come into training camp in the best shape of his career.

This is a hard working kid with his mind on his future. Keep up the good work, Spencer.

Totally agree. I think we're gonna have fun watching our young team this coming season. Between what the Bee has said, and what our own CruzDude observed in Vegas, the interaction between Westphal and the team should be much more copacetic than in the past couple of years. That alone should make it more fun...

All we need is for Donte to start stepping up his game and I think most reasonable fans should have a pretty exciting season to enjoy

Apology accepted!:D

With Casspi looking over his shoulder this season, we may see a rededicated Greene. At least I hope so. He has a lot to learn, especially if he's going to play two positions on a regular basis. I do like the emphasis that Westphal is putting on defense.

Yeah I agree, Greene definately has some competition this year for playing time. Thats why we really need to move Noc or Cisco, and give both greene and casspi a chance to duke it out. The competition between the two will help them down the road, but I could see some problems developing if only one of them can get any playing time because we have 2 vets at the same position.

We really don't need to move Noc to get the young guys more PT. We just need a coach with the stones to sit Noc on the bench.

But, really, if Greene continues to bulk up from the weight room work he's doing by the time the season starts he'll be as big as JT & Spencer. We have no backup SG except Cisco. So, give Cisco & Noc, about 12mpg each off the bench, and start Casspi or Donte in preseason to see who wins the backup job behind Noc during the regular season.

The Kings have a lot of versatile players, I'm not as worried about the SF as about the Backup Center. I just don't like the idea of JT in that role. Plus, I'd like to see us pick up a third string SG for the minimum. It's a good insurance policy concidering Martin's recent health issues.

We have no backup SG except Cisco.

We have 5 guards, I don't see how we could come up short. If Kevin were to hurt himself and be out for a month, we play Rodriguez and Udrih at point, and Evans and Garcia at SG. No biggie. I'm much more concerned that our only backup C also happens to be our starting PF. If Hawes gets injured, either JT plays 48 minutes a game, or we switch to small ball. Bleh.

True that is an option. But, as has been pointed out on this site in other posts, the best match for Evans offensive game is a guard that can shot the 3. Sergio is a distributor and needs the ball, but so does Evans. Beno has shot the ball from the outside but no for a high percentage recently. And, neither is as good a defender as Cisco. That would seem to make Cisco the best option to play along Evans should Martin get hurt.

So, to me the best solution isn't to move our starting PG and make him learn a new position in his rookie season. It just seems better to me to move Cisco to his natural position at SG instead. Actually, if we could get him for the right price, I wouldn't mind bring back McCants on a 1 yr contract.

And, since the Kings still hold the Bird rights to Ike & McCants, I could see the Kings bringing back both of them on 1 yr Min Contracts. So, far I haven't heard either of their names in FA rumors. So, by the start of training camp, they might be willing to take alot less to stay in the league rather than go overseas.

Hmm? He played SG for ages, right up until the latter part of the last season. SG is the position he knows best. Rodriguez may not be the three point shooter that Cisco is, but he's pretty good at distributing the ball, whereas Cisco sometimes shows questionable judgment. Considering Evans' A/TO ratio, it might be better for him to pass it to Rodriguez a lot, and let him take it from there, rather than directly distributing the ball all the time. I really don't see anything else which could come between the Kings and the record for the worst A/TO ratio in the NBA this year.

Cisco's better D and three point shooting makes that seem worth a try, too. I suppose they could switch them around based on matchup.

I liked the value we got out of McCants last year, and Diogu when we finally played him. But we have 5 guards and 7 forwards on the roster already, including at least 3 guys who can play every position either of those guys play. I guess I've just gotten used to this cycle where we find decent young bench guys, try them out, then either they don't show much potential and we let them walk, or they do, and want more than minimum, and we let them walk. I'm thinking that's what'll happen this time. I'm thinking we're set on paying them no more than slightly over minimum, but that someone else will.

As far as Martin's backup goes, you seem to have made up your mind that Evans is a SG & not a PG. While I believe Evans can be either, but will be of greater value as a PG. I believe a player should play the quickest position he can defend. If Evans can defend the SF, SG, & PG equally well because of his size & quickness, then he should play the PG. JT can play the Center, PF & SF, but he's not quick enough for most SF's and not strong enough of most Centers. So, therefore his best position is PF.

As for our FA's. there are 2 roster spots and $5M in cap space which we really can't do anything with until the trade deadline. Because there are very few if any players worth spending the money on at this point. I really would have liked to have seen the Kings make a move for a Center, but there are litterly no quality centers available now in Free Agency. So, unless they pull off a trade, our FA's may be our best options. So, now it's a game of who blinks first. Do they stand firm and end up the way Bonzi did. Or, do they lower their expectations and play another year in the league.
