Hate piece about CWebb

The fans outlasted him, though, forcing Webber to look up and around the arena and applaud them in return. A nice gesture, to be sure, though with Webber you never quite know what's sincere and what is simply the role he's chosen to play for the night.

He then reverted to his long-running I'm-a-badass persona once the ball went up, a recurring role that he first broke out with the Fab Five in Michigan. This time, though, he didn't play it with the same intensity seen in his first meetings with the Wizards, say, after they traded him or the first few times he faced Don Nelson after his exodus from the Warriors. He buried a 20-foot jumper 11 seconds into the game and then peered around Skinner to glower at former teammate Mike Bibby, as if to say, "Bring it." When Bibby drove for a layup, Webber stepped over to challenge the shot and knocked Bibby on his back in the follow-through, as if to say, "Don't think I won't." Or maybe it was: "Yeah, I didn't do much of that when I was here this season but that doesn't mean I can't."

Then, when Peja Stojakovic came at him on a breakaway and missed a leaner, Webber grabbed the rebound and smirked, as if to say, "I told you he was soft." This being the Peja he vaguely accused last summer of not being tough enough and therefore a reason why the Kings never reached the NBA Finals. When another turnover produced another Stojakovic drive on Webber, Stojakovic finished this one and drew a foul as well. Webber patted referee Gary Zielinski on the butt, said, "Good call," and then sneered all the way back to the 76ers' bench. A little later, he grabbed a rebound and bounce-passed it behind his back to Iverson while staring at the Kings' bench, as if to say, "Yeah, you once had a big man who could that."

As one visiting scout suggested, upon hearing the standing ovation: "I wonder if they're applauding that he's gone."

I got confused after reading this...Does Bucher write for the one of the biggest sports companies in the world or for The Enquirer?

I strongly suspect The Enquirer would not stoop to the level of Ric Bucher.

;)

Yeah, if I had that kind of telepathy, I wouldn't be wasting it reading Webb's brain waves. Not that he's dull or anything....

The article was immature and petty. Nothing but grade school sniping.

In the past few days, one person mistook me for an ESPN commentator, and another said I should be an announcer. More kindness than substance in both cases I'm sure, but I KNOW I can do better than that mess. I'd almost be ashamed to collect my paycheck. Almost.

I agree usually about ESPN but I think they did good job from the game last nite. They showed a lot more than I expected, 3 minutes on sportscenter, probably record for Kings and they actually showed them ahead of the Lakers and their new GM lol. That's gotta be a first. I have to say nice job. Even though people here did great job of filling us in on what happened, it was great to see at least some of it on video.

Obviously, this article is over-the-top, and the guy is taking some frustration or something out on C-Webb.
But the one thing I think he does get right is Webber's posturing, i.e. when he puts on the "badass" persona. I never cared for that - you never get the feeling he's sincere, it always looks like he's playing a role. During the interviews, you can tell he's trying really hard to be charming, or prove that he's been playing hard or something. I think C-Webb really cares a lot what the fans think about him, and what the journalists write. Even when they're idiots like this guy.
Although, I guess it might be preferable to Peja, who sometimes looks like he doesn't give a crap about anything at all.
Obviously, these are just my opinions, and has nothing to do with b-ball. And I must admit, I sometimes disliked Webber's playing style, which may color my opinions. If anyone thinks differently I'd love to hear it.

Ric Bucher cracks me up. He always writes these borderline slanderous libel pieces about Webber that get play on KHTK and other media outlets. He knows what he's doing.

Of course now that Webber is no longer a King, should we care that Bucher hates Webber and always has????????

So this is the vaunted article that Grant and Mike were discussing on Monday, huh?

I think I'm going to apply at ESPN.com...how hard can it be to interpret body language and write "he dribbled the ball as if to say, 'I'm imagining this is your head, Bibby'"

WTF??? Totally not Scottish.

Bucher once mentioned that Webber told him that there was no way he would re-sign with Sac in 2001, and so Bucher wrote that in an article. Of course, Webber did re-sign with the Kings, making Bucher look incompetent, so I wouldn't be surprised if ill feelings stemming from incidents of that nature taint his perception of Webber. My own feeling is that Bucher should shoulder a lot of blame for his own bad reporting/opinionating, and acting as if Webber's actions toward him indicate that Webber is a selfish, wanna-be, prima donna to everybody is just bad judgment.

I just read this from this site: http://slamonline.com/links/03282005/index1.html

Lang, although I am a daily links reader, I have yet to email you, until now. I am an employee of the Sacramento Kings, more
behind the scenes. Anyways, I understand your dislike for ESPN and their continuing errors in sports reporting. The following is more
fuel to add to the fire.

I stumbled upon a story about Chris Webber's return to Sacramento posted on espn.com by Ric Bucher on March 28, 2005. In it is states: "After the game, he talked about his love for Sacramento and the friendships with Kings teammates that will endure, although it's worth noting that none got together with him when he arrived in town Sunday night, nor did any stick around to see him off after his news conference."
The interesting thing is that I was there that (last) night and some of his former teammates did stick around to see Chris off, the most notable being Bobby Jackson, Mike Bibby, Brad Miller, Greg Ostertag, and Peja Stojakovic. Let me note that these players don't stick around long after games, but this night they did. Players like Bibby, Jackson, and Peja stuck around the tunnel just outside the media room and locker room to wait for their former teammate. All exchanged long, genuine hugs with Chris. Some, like Brad Miller and Greg Ostertag, even went onto the court long after the game and waited for Chris to come out of the tunnel. Chris visited with a group of underpriveleged children (I believe) and a few friends. Brad and Greg came over afterwards to exchange, again, long and genuine hugs. As all of these events unfolded, nowhere did I notice Ric Bucher. So who is he to say that none of his friends stuck around afterward when he didn't himself. Everybody from photographers, camera crews, ballboys and friends stuck around to see Webb for the last time this season. Ric Bucher didn't. Who makes this stuff up anyway? Oh yeah, ESPN.

First of all, this letter may read a little choppy, but that's because I edited it pretty heavily to hide the writer's job and identity. That said, I have no beef with Ric, who I know from sitting with at games over the years, and he's always been really cool to me. Maybe he missed this one, or maybe the writer didn't see him, maybe he meant none of the Kings came into the Sixer's locker room...I don't know. Interesting to hear that did all stay to see him off, though.

Ric don't know anything!

I'm glad this Kings employee mention this although I already had a feeling the Kings players went to see Webb after the game.
