Greg Oden

Anyone see Greg Oden play on Saturday?

After seeing about 10 of his plays, he reminded me of Dikembe Mutombo - huge, good shotblocker/rebounder, but his offensive game looked limited.

Anyone else see?

Saw the highlights, and yeah he moved kinda like Deke. He looked like he was going to eat somebody. Also was amused to see that Valparaiso's two centers both fouled out ins omething like a combined 29minutes (10fls) trying to cover him. Think that had zero combined points as well.

Remember, he is coming off a broken wrist so he was basically playing left handed (and he's a righty).

Ha - that's funny, I kept thinking "deke, deke, deke"

Clearly he'll be a dominant defender/rebounder but i wonder how good he'll be offensively. He just didn't look like he moved fluidly enough to have an offensive impact in the NBA. I realize he was playing his first college game coming off of an injury but your wrist doesn't affect how you move. And also, he won't be going against Valparaiso's bigs - he'll be facing nba heavyweights like Kenny Thomas and SAR - haha

He'll be better. His head seems on straight, and as of RIGHT NOW he has the physical tools. His productivity came without the use of his dominant hand. That's impressive. That, and he has a beard.

Beard = success. Disprove it. :D

John Salmons has a beard and he has not experienced a lot of success in the league. But then, Salmons has a very bad beard IMHO - wish he would shave it. Maybe it should be:

Good Beard = success.

Let's tank the season and get the most ping pong balls we can.

I'm kidding, of course.

But he's going to be the real deal. I hope someone in the east gets him if we don't.

You're joking but if you wanted to tank THIS is the year to do it. Tanking does wonders. The Spurs tanked several years ago and guess what, they end up with Tim Duncan who has anchored their team ever since. Years ago, the Houston Rockets tanked two years in a row to get Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon. (in response, after that the NBA instituted the lottery system)

But even if you don't get the #1 pick, this draft is just nuts. The guy right after Oden, Kevin Durant is a monster. I saw him the other day live and wow, the guy is 6-10 with handles of a guard and can knock down 3 pointers with ease. Imagine KG size but with the ability to slash and explode down the lane. And on top of that he's 18 so he might get a little taller and grow some more. Also, other guys like Brandon Wright and Julian Wright are pretty sweet as well. This draft will be loaded with talent and outside of the Lebron/Melo/DWade/Bosh/Darko draft, this one will be the best in many years.

But on Oden, the reason why he doesn't have an offensive game is because he hasn't needed one till now. He was so dominant in high school that you just threw him the ball and he dunked it. He didn't need a post game, a jump shot, or any other basketball fundamental. But he's a smart guy and should pick that stuff up in due time.
