Graswich leaving "The Bee"

I think these excerpts are somewhat interesting:

Fond farewell: This is the final column, my last story for The Bee, period, no semicolon. There are many reasons, but nothing dramatic, nothing to fashion into a headline. Not at all. There have been times when the boss could have, should have, called me in and said, well, now you have gone too far, get out, you're fired. And there have been times when I could have, should have, quit. Absolutely. But none of those fond memories explain why this is the final column. The column and job are ending not because of contract disputes, audience disinterest, phony expense receipts, stress, insubordination, negligence, medical issues, goal tending or flight to avoid prosecution. No. It's ending because the time is right. The newspaper trade is changing. The way people share information is changing. The Bee is changing. Why not change with them? Why not start a business and find new ways to share information? I slide into a new challenge -- helping organizations communicate -- inspired by lessons from an ancient craft. ...

...Watched basketball in the last row at Arco Arena with a guy named Larry Christ, who liked the last row. Got attacked by a basketball player. He was 7-foot and 250 pounds and thought he could fight. Stayed away from sports the last 10 years. Didn't miss it...

------------------------------------------

Stayed away from sports, R.E.? Au contraire. What you did was take potshots at the basketball players, the owners and even those who support the Kings. Your thinly veiled hatred was evident to anyone who read your column. The glee with which you reported any kind of transgression by any of the Kings - or even a RUMOR of a transgression - was an embarrassment.

I firmly believe your departure is overdue and I believe it's partially because you finally bit off more than you could chew with your misquote of a good and powerful man (Joe Benvenuti).

I won't miss you. You long ago ceased to be objective or even realistic about the team I love. And I can't help but wonder if you were that wrong about the Kings, what else were you wrong about?

Having said that, I wish you well in the future simply because it means you won't be a part of mine.

Also noticed in a separate story that today is Mark Kreidler's last day with the paper.

NOTE from VF21: I've posted the Kreidler article in a separate thread. I hope everyone who has enjoyed his writing will make a comment. I'm reasonably sure Mark has read this board on occasion. ;)

The last thing Graswich can teach anyone is communication.
And Graswich didn't fight Polynice. One punch and one fall is not a fight. It's called getting your eye dotted.
What disturbs me is that he wrote things he knew he should be fired for yet he never got called on it. Anyone who depends on the Bee as a source of information probaby be aware that they have issues with accuracy in their reporting and columnists. I have to go now because my cell phone is ringing and it says "David Stern".

This is his final column, but I didn't want to post the whole thing so I just excerpted from the link that started the thread.

I think this is main forum worthy, as it's the bright spot in an otherwise dismal day, IMHO, for Kings fans as far as local media is concerned.

Graswich leaves, Kreidler leaves. Yin and yang. One a hack and one a star. The universe is balanced.

As much as we dislike him... He actually was the #1 rated columnist in the area. Year in year out... I didn't like him but obviously some did.

I wish him good luck. Cannot wait until a real paper comes in to replace the Bee.

He was the only Caen-type columnist on the only large daily in the entire area. Him being rated #1 is akin to Francisco Garcia being the best Dominican Republic -born player in the NBA.

;)
