Grant and Jerry future?

Grant + Jerry are easily one of the best commentary couple out of any of the NBA league pass people and better than 90% of the big network guys, even if Grant is a dick on his radio show he's very good on the TV and they should keep Jerry unless than plan to replace him with Bill Walton.

Agree totally EXCEPT for the Bill Walton replacement comment. Walton is horrible and all too in love with his own dialog, er, diatribe, er, pontification. He causes my wife and I to always, ALWAYS, turn off the sound when he is on a Kings TV broadcast.

Grant and Jerry have brightened up 4 or 5 really bad seasons as best anyone could hope for. Compared to their peers around the league they are in the top 3 no question. Pollard maybe, Walton never. Grant and Jerry are a really good frick and frack on the air.

Agree completely with this. I'm trying to imagine watching a Kings game on TV without Grant and Jerry, and it's hard to imagine. I understand what others are saying regarding his defense of the Maloofs, but personally (selfishly, I know), it's still important to me that those two remain as the TV guys.

The radio is a different story: I have tried listening to him on the radio and I literally can't do it. The way he talks to callers is painfully rude to me, and I have always turned it off. Take away the radio thing and leave him on TV with Jerry until Jerry is ready to hang it up, then replace Jerry with someone like Pollard. That's my vote.

Also, I would rather stub the same toe three times in a row than listen to Walton as the color guy. His "stream of consciousness" color commentary, as Marv Albert once called it, is not good.

agreed 100% regarding bill walton. i've never understood the fascination with him as a commentator, particularly at kf.com. it seems so backwards to me. in '02, as color commentary on the national stage, walton was humping the lakers' legs so viciously throughout the western conference finals that i half-expected him to keel over from exhaustion before that awful game 6 ever came-to-be. it was so nauseating that my father and i would watch the games on mute while listening to gary gerould call them over the radio...

i understand that some people find walton entertaining (in that "look at the monkeys throw their feces at each other!!" kinda way, i guess), but when i'm watching a basketball game, i'm watching a basketball game. i don't need some joker attempting to divert attention away from the court. a good color guy knows how to effectively comment on the game and enthusiastically represent the action at a minimum of hyperbole, without forcing the spotlight onto themselves...

you can be compelling and exciting as a commentator without being a complete ham. and, while walton has the occasional insight worth noting, he smothers his high basketball IQ in so much verbal mayonnaise that you forget what it is you're supposed to be ingesting as a fan. it drives me ****ing crazy. i find that grant napear and jerry reynolds are adequate in their respective TV roles, and while i'd personally prefer a fresh take heading into this new era of sacramento kings basketball, if my choice is between grant-&-jerry and walton-&-whoever, i'm taking grant-&-jerry eleven times out of ten...

This would absolutely crush me.

They're familiar and comfortable and I still associate them with the glory years. I need SOMETHING to cling onto.

Here's how this plays out in my nightmare... In order to make a splash they hire Bill Walton full time, pair him with Stephen A Smith, and when I put the TV on mute to listen to the radio broadcast instead, I discover that they've replaced Gary Gerould with Jalen Rose.

Franchise saved?

Also, Grant's time on Rome might be limited.. He knows sports, and he gets ratings, but a lot of Rome's audience don't tune it for the logical breakdown of the sports scene but to "smack off" in the jungle. His abrasive, dry personality seems antithetical and contrary to the usually comedic types guest hosting the show

I fills in all the time for Rome. Usually it's a day. I think he's on for three days or so this week.

And his personality is completely different on Rome. He's respectful, polite to all the nationwide callers, unlike on his Sac sports radio show. After all Rome refers to his radio audience as "clones." Two-faced Peaches will never change and must be booted out of Sac. Backed Maloofs 100% until very-very late in the game and then claimed all along to be staunch supporter of "we stay" movement. Shallow, insincere, totally two-faced!!

He was always a backer of "We Stay". He just wanted to have it both ways, where the Kings stay without the Maloofs being villains, which flew directly in the face of a lot of the anti-Maloofs animus behind the movement.

Grant said yesterday he is in the middle of a multi year contract. So I doubt he is let go this year. He didn't say anything about Jerry's contract.

I don't really care all that much, but Grant is such a smug douchebag that there's a part of me that would just be so happy to see him canned.

Haha. You must be ones of those guys who call up and say that the Kings should sign Dwight Howard or Chris Paul.

As much as I despise Grant, he's just the sort of weasel to have a contract that would make him nigh impossible to fire. He's probably got Leno clauses all over that thing.

As a play-by-play guy, Grant is fine. Same goes for Jerry really. But I hate the negativity Grant brings to the team. Just for the sake of starting with a clean slate I think it's probably a net positive if he's let go. That or someone needs to get through to him that going on the air and disparaging someone's character that you work with day in and day out is not the best way to build a positive work environment and if it continues then he's just going to have to give up the job with the team.

Yeah that's a great post that I agree. You can't work for a team and then just go on your radio show and cause controversy by blasting some of the players... Not cool!

I like Jerry Reynolds as the color/analyst, but the more I think on it, I doubt they ask him back. I just think they'll have a problem asking back the ex-Director of Player Personnell to do their commentary.

Maybe, but Jerry is probably the least controversal of anyone. There's a reason he's lasted as long as he has. Hell, he's almost part of the woodwork. And as I've said before, contrary to what some may think, he's a very knowledgable person. You shouldn't confuse his on air personality with his intelligence. In personal conversations, he can be very biting with his criticism. You just won't hear it on the air. Jerry does the job he's been asked to do. And thats to bring some of his Indiana backwoods humor to the broadcast. But if you ask him for change for a newly minted 9 dollar bill, he'll give you back 3 three's.
